Thanks for the advice. Think I might go for this one. Though I've gotta admit I'm tempted by the 500GB version.
Great build. The only recommendation I have is to get an SSD first then an HDD later rather than what you have. Samsung 256GB SSDs are my favorite. I recommend this because a 256GB ssd can hold a few games and it is easier to move games to and HDD than an OS to an SSD later.
You should change your 250GB SSD for a Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB
You should know that I'm not an expert, so except for the SSD, I'm not able to help you with the other parts. But you won't be able to play AAA games on ultra and 1440p with a GTX 1060
Would something like this work?
Would it be a noticeable speed increase? Also, I play games like WoW, would the game need to be installed on the SSD to run faster or can it stay installed on my HDD? Can I have an SSD and a HDD in my PC at the same time?
Alright, thanks a bunch!
Also I guess I should've looked at the rating earlier. 4.9 on partpicker, 4.8 on Amazon that's pretty impressive.
Pretty sure I found the same one on Amazon as well. Slightly cheaper and as far as I can see it's the same one (?)
Versteh also nicht ganz, wo jetzt wer weniger verdient.
EDIT: Interessant, jetzt kostet sie also 92€ bei Amazon UND bei Saturn. Vor 2 Wochen habe ich sie für 80€ gekauft!?
I have the same MacBook as you. A few months back I upped it to 16gb, replaced the HDD with a 250gb SSD, and dropped a 1tb drive in place of the DVD drive. I honestly can't see myself replacing it for a few years now. I literally can't replace it like-for-like with anything Apple sell right now.
:edit: I put this SSD in, and it's wonderful - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-inch-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00P736UEU
I'm not sure about others but my first was a Samsung and my next one will be as well.
Again, I don't know what's the exact catch with some Cruical SSD's costing way less for the same GB(at least in my country) so I don't really know.
In the future we'll be rocking M.2 ones, amazing speeds.
EDIT: Funny thing is I paid around 70€ for my 120GB ssd and now you pay 10€ more for double the space, nice!
>next few months
Thats a nice pc; the video card is just pretty weak. I would buy an SSD right away and put your OS on it. AMD/Nvidia are launching new gpu lines next month; take the rest of your cash and buy a new gpu when those hit.
I don't think it matters too much, If you have a tight budget, OCZ make decent ones. If theres no limit then Samsung make decent ones, still fairly cheap, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-inch-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00P736UEU/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1461597590&sr=1-1&keywords=ssd
Installing your OS on an SSD is never a bad idea. And if you're gonna get one then get a good one; I'd say the favourite of more or less everyone right now (assuming you're gonna be using the SATA III the CD drive was taking) would be the Samsung 850 EVO series, whichever size suits your needs but for just the OS and some programs, maybe some games, you'll be fine @ 250GB :)
EDIT: Pretty sure amazon will have this on their .nl domain but I don't speak Dutch
You could also take the 850 EVO for the same price with theoretical 10GB more and maybe a little bit faster write speed.
If you want to play every AAA title on high settings at playable frame rates for the next 3 years or so then yes, there's quite a difference. However if you only hit 1 or 2 AAA titles from time to time then the 970M should be enough. To put it in comparison, the 970M is 60% faster (could easily be translated into 60% better frame rate) than the 960M on your old Y50.
The thing is, while other components of the laptop is easily upgradable, the GPU is not. If you got the 970M now and later felt underwhelmed, you would be pretty much stuck with it for the laptop's life span.
Btw, if you're tech-savvy, you could save yourself a few pounds by getting and installing this this yourself instead of getting the M.2 I recommended. You'll just have to undo some screws on the backplate, remove it and slide the 2.5'' SSD drive right in.
Seeing as you're still within your budget I would strongly suggest getting a ssd for your os. For about £60 you can get a really nice 256GB disk (e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00P736UEU/) which is perfect for the os and various programs. You can keep the games on your hdd. You'll most likely end up installing a new OS anyway, as they rarely work when moved to a new pc.
These days SSD is the best upgrade you can get for an older machine so building a new one without it isn't a good idea (imho).
Looks good. Not much else you can cut. Maybe a 256GB SSD instead of 120GB SSD + 1 TB HDD? Samsung 850 Evo, 80€.
Yep, I get your point. There doesn't really seem to be cheaper DDR4. Also, check out this deal. A 250GB Samsung 850 EVO for 79€. Ships to Portugal. Good luck with your build!
30 gigs? That's a very small drive!
I've had very good experience with samsung Evo drives: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00P736UEU/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1450887231&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+evo
This one which you linked is the Samsung EVO SSD. I have it, and it is great.
If your case doesn't have any 2.5 inch bays, I think it's possible to connect SSDs via USB, then use it as an external drive.
You might consider getting a non-micro ATX motherboard if you're going with a full tower, though it shouldn't really make a difference.
RE: SSD - get both SSD and HDD. SSD for operating system and frequently used programs/games, HDD for media storage and other programs/games. Samsung 850 EVO is a great SSD. £57.58 on AmazonUK, so within your budget: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00P736UEU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1448476736&sr=8-2&keywords=850+evo
Looks great! Almost nothing bad to say about this except that there a Samsung 250gb EVO SSD for similar price on amazon.de and it is a faster SSD. Not by much, you might not even notice it, but why not buy the better thing?
what are the specs and model number of the laptop you are putting this into?
for £50 about all you will be able to get is a 120gb one like this I don't know how much storage you need.
>If i want to start afresh, will i have to install Windows all over again? And all my softwares/music/movies, etc?
yes, if you get a SSD that is the same size or larger than how much space you are using on your HDD you can clone the HDD to the SSD (you will need an external USB to SATA converter to do this on your laptop, or another PC that you can plug both drives into)
Absolutely! You'll be able to max out most games for a long while at 1080p and should have great performance at 1440p should you choose to get a monitor at that resolution.
Build looks perfect except I'd suggest adding a 120gb or 250gb SSD that you can use for the operating system and programs. This will SIGNIFICANTLY speed up things for you.
Here is the 250gb version of the Samsung 850 EVO (best SSD currently available IMO) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00P736UEU/?tag=ho01f-21
You could also go with the 120gb version if price is an issue.
Because it is USB3 there is practically no noticable difference in speed between building the SSD right into the PS4 Pro or connecting it externally via USB3.
So in general the best option is, IMHO:
This way you can enjoy both a big internal drive and one fast, smaller external drive for the games that you actually play at the moment.
What I have been using for the last ~2 years without any problems:
Although nowadays that 250 GB SSD is a bit too small but I can manage. Putting this all together and handling it like moving games to and from the external store is very simple.
It sure does help to improve load times, though don't expect any wonders. There are games where you can cut load times into half but in other cases you might only get a 10-20% speedup. Usually though I am always the first person in a mission or Underground and have to wait 20 seconds for everyone elso to show up.
www.mindfactory.de I think. But get only the small (and expensive) parts from there. It seems to be 22 euros shipping to France but I don't know how much it will be for large packets.
If I were you, I'd get:
CPU, RAM, CPU cooler from mindfactory (all in one order to save on shipping)
SSD, GPU, motherboard and whichever case you want from amazon.fr (again all in one order to save on shipping)
and the PSU, if the shipping costs stay the same, from mindfactory or pay the extra 10 and get it from amazon along with the rest.
i totally agree with Dr_doener, my mac became very slow after some year of usage... last week i bought the ssd from amazon and today i installed it.
Result? it's super fast, boot up in 12 second vs the 1:30 mins on the hard disk, the apps open immediatly ecc.. and it's super silent.
i suggest you to buy the samsung ssd, they are really good(i think one of the best in the market) and doesnt cost too much.
i bought this one amazon samsung! It took me 5 minute to replace the older one with this, doesnt metter if you are not expert, its super east, i suggest you to use this tutorial if you dont know where to start video!
ps: last thing i suggest you is to install yosemite by zero, do a clean install
these, although 3 years ago; so i now also have one of these too
Samsung SSD 850 EVO, 250 Go - SSD Interne SATA III 2.5" - MZ-75E250B/EU https://www.amazon.fr/Samsung-SSD-850-EVO-250/dp/B00P736UEU
I upgraded my 2011 MBP to 16GB RAM and 250GB SSD and it runs like a dream, handles photoshop pretty well and all of my web development applications ( docker, VS Code, etc. ).
This is EXACTLY what was happening to me.
I bought an SSD and it solved the problem instantly.
This is the one I bought and I've never looked back - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-inch-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00P736UEU/
Can you recommend me a Memory Card, is 16 GB compatible with my laptop?

For a fitting SSD i found 1TB SSD Samsung Evo would this work?
> About This Mac > Storage (eller tilsvarende på dansk)
Kig her eller her for en guide.
Clean OS install on this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00P736UEU/ref=twister_B013ZJ4EWC?_encoding=UTF8&th=1
Move all your other crap to your current disk.
What do you mean by "better"? If you mean faster, then almost any SSD will be faster, and something like the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB is a solid choice. However, if you mean faster with the same capacity, I don't know if you're going to find a 1TB SSD for under £250, let alone £100. You can get a hybrid drive, like the Toshiba H200, which under certain circumstances will perform better than a non-hybrid HDD.
If you are willing to spend the money, then the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB is a good option in my experience. I have several of these running 24/7 and haven't had a problem yet.
Well, he did ask for a cheap SSD. And for less than £100, he can't get 1TB. He can get a smaller SSD though.
Both are better in terms of performance compared to the Barracuda. By the way, don't have faith in fusion drives, they're over-hyped pieces of junk that are barely any faster than a normal harddisk.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-inch-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00P736UEU
Not much more than the OCZ one.
Well, I was thinking about the 850 EVO

I'm looking to upgrade an old PC that I built ages ago and used to use a lot for gaming but now only do so rarely. I'm looking to upgrade my psu and hd as they both died previously and I only replaced them with cheap parts in order to get it working. Now I want to be able to play games again but I'm not too fussed about playing everything on high settings.
Specs currently are:
CPU - I7 920 (not overclocked but not averse to doing so)
GFX - Radeon HD6900
PSU - 700w (non modular and a bit crappy)
Motherboard - GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366
RAM - Not entirely sure but it was 6gb in triple channel I think.
HD - Samsung Spin Point F1 1TB
I'm looking at these options:
PSU -
EVGA 750 (£84.30)
BeQuiet 700w (£84.84)
SSD -
Samsung 850 EVO 250gb (£72.01)
Sandisk SSD Plus 240gb (£53.09)
Is the performance difference between the Samsung and the Sandisk worth the price difference? I am not overly concerned with optmised performance, in fact I would say price is more pressing than performance for me. I just want something that is quicker than my current hd and won't flake out.
PSU I am happy to spend around that price £85 is the EVGA 750 the best I can get?
Its this badboy righthere :)
CPU (4690):
Unless you plan to jump all the way to a 4690K, it wouldn't make sense the jump. Keep in mind, that for that upgrade to not be a waste you would also need to purchase a Z97 series motherboard and that would cost you about an extra ~£75 (£30 for the CPU and another £45 for the Z97 board). This all assumes you will be overclocking in which case you will also need an aftermarket fan like the CM Hyper 212 which is going to run you about £25.
All in all, £100 cost that will net maybe +%10 performance in 'normal' tasks, but could help a lot during emulation if/when you overclock.
Heat and Power:
No, pc's don't pull a lot of power when they are idling or doing simple tasks. As a result they will not kick out a lot of heat when they are idling or doing simple tasks.
Recommendations:
Unless you need a whole TB of storage on day one, get an SSD instead. The performance increase of going from an HDD to an SSD is insane. I would recommend getting the Samsung 850 EVO for £55.71. Keep in mind that buying an SSD is something you want to have when you setup a computer as OS migration is just about impossible and can only be really done by full reinstallation. A mass storage drive on the other hand is super easy to add in after the fact.
About to start buying the parts for my PC build, first is the SSD. Is there any reason whatsoever not to buy the Samsung 2.5 inch 250 GB 850 EVO Solid State Drive?
Could you report back what you think about the display? I had my eye on it as well. Would be interested to know whether it really makes no noise (my current dell started to hum when the brightness is reduced, but this model is reported to not do that).
For your build, I think it is valid. You basically have 1150€ left for the PC itself. Note that you do not necessarily need a Z170 mainboard for a locked i5, but I would only get the i5-6400 if you bclk-overclock it with that Z170. The case you picked is extremely expensive. I'd get a faster SSD, given for what it might be used.
Your budget barely allows it, but 1440p gaming would profit a lot from a better gpu, specifically from a Fury:

Agreed, I can't live without an SSD any more. Boot times are absurdly quick even with a budget friendly SSD such as this: Samsung EVO 850
I keep a few of my most played games on my SSD and the rest on a 2TB HDD. Do you really need 4TB? You could save a little on your WD and spend it on an SSD.
EDIT: For example you could get this 3TB WD Black for £120 Link and spend the difference towards an SSD. Sorry for proselytizing so much on the benefits of SSDs but I really think they are a must for a modern build and make the biggest real world difference in performance for the cost.
OK thanks , Friday I made another list before you made that comment I made some changes to it that you said to do. What's the difference between the Gigabyte motherboard and the MSI one except for the 8 euros?http://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/TheFullyFox/saved/zh7xFT
I also think we could change the Crucial SSD for the Samsung one which is about 10 euros more but it's Samsung si maybe more trustable? http://www.amazon.de/Samsung-MZ-75E250B-EU-interne-schwarz/dp/B00P736UEU/ref=pd_sim_147_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41fw65-8tpL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0RD5Y52CKN7DBXW7895G
Should I get an SSD aswell?
Like this one?
There's a deal right now on amazon.es: a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB for 69.95€. I think the shipping fees are low for Portugal.
Or, better yet, a link in OP's country.
u might get that ssd a little bit cheaper here, if the prices dont change again: http://www.amazon.de/Samsung-MZ-75E250B-EU-interne-schwarz/dp/B00P736UEU/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00P736UEU
£66.99 sold by third-party seller and fulfilled by Amazon (including prime delivery etc)
> wow that is a big price increase from 24 to 27
Yeah. It's an IPS-panel. Better colors and viewing angle. Is even cheap for that.
> whats the difference between these ssds?
The connector. For you would be the first one, http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/250GB-Samsung-850-Evo-2-5Zoll--6-4cm--SATA-6Gb-s-TLC-Toggle--MZ-75E250B-E_987465.html. But it is cheaper on Amazon.
Hey! I got some advice from another sub, and got recommended this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00P736UEU/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item
I'm thinking of just ordering it and replacing it, should work right?
No, significant performance increases are not in 10-30€ reach.
What you could get is a 256GB SSD for 98€, 30€ more. That would help a lot with running games (decrease load times) on there. Other near upgrade is the case, a Cooler Master N300 should be a lot easier to build in than the pretty basic Zalman Z1. Last idea: For 15€ you could get Windows 10 directly, which would save you the upgrade process and might make it easier in the future to transfer it to a new pc.
Thanks for the ultra quick responses! I'll go for this one then if the Kingston sucks? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00P736UEU/ref=sr_1_1?&ie=UTF8&qid=1438437255&sr=8-1&keywords=ssd
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00P736UEU this is what you want
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00P736UEU/?tag=pcp0f-21
Is where I got it from.
Thanks for the insight.
Wow, I didn't really expect such a huge price drop. I guess I'll look around to see the difference between the two. Are they noticeably different, or only just a little by read/write speeds?
Ok that sounds good so far. I thought about buying this one (most popular SSD and also one of the cheapest right now at "my amazon"): http://www.amazon.de/dp/B00P736UEU Thats the EVO 850 - the better one you were talking about right?
Now i looked up the Crucial mx100 - and I gotta say it looks good and the price is even better http://www.amazon.de/dp/B00KFAGCWK
So in the end both of them are good - but the Crucial is cheaper so that's what I should go for? Thank you for your advice on SSDs! No problem - it was midnigth when I wrote my reply and I went to bed shortly afterwards so it's alright.
Hey, great videos, have watched them and I think I got the gist of it. Very useful indeed!

PCPP does not properly display the prices for the mainboard, the SSD and the OS.
The SSD at €118,90 and the OS is still debatable, not sure whether to pick 7 or 8.1. So in total, we're at 1229,53€ without the OS.
What do you think of this build?
Personally i'd go with a samsung ssd but other than that to me it looks solid.
Something like this
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
I've cheaped out on the keyboard/mouse because I'm a cheap bastard. The monitor chosen is simply because I have it and it does the job at half the price.
As for the case, you could cheap out on the case and go for an SSD like this one, but that's really personal choice.
