Sorry, it's a bit of a weird case and I might not be doing the best job of explaining it.
I purchased an M2 SSD that utilizes the SATA III interface (not a SATA cable) over the M2 Port. Something like this. As I understand it it's just an older/slower protocol, as such the drives that use it are a bit cheaper. My motherboard doesn't support that protocol, only the newer NVME. So the SSD fit in the M2 Slot fine and even lit up during my initial out of the case test, but couldn't be recognized by the motherboard.
I could have gone the route of using a 2.5" SSD connected via SATA cable, but it's way slower than even the slowest M.2 SSD and the prices are pretty similar.
Looking at Amazon it seems there's three versions of SATA for SSDs. Since my current SSD doesn't specify which version of SATA it is, I'm guessing it would be SATA I. Would a SATA III drive like the Samsung 850 EVO MZ-N5E250BW still connect just fine?
This Samsung 850 EVO is about equal to the Samsung 850 Pro but it doesn't use power or sata cables. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=25INFPFI9SDAJ&coliid=I3ATE37DCC7HE4&psc=1 Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB - M.2 SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-N5E250BW) $98.00
I just installed this SSD, incredibly easy to do and it works great. Mine came with the 1TB HDD so I am running my OS and a few games off of it. Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB - M.2 SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-N5E250BW) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_D3qAyb1GVJQD7
Yep thats a M.2 slot, when i upgraded my 2014 GS60 i had to find a M.2 that was the right Size, Interface, and keying. For me it was a 2280, SATA3, B+M, M.2 SSD. This is the one i purchased to be exact. for you it seems like you need either a 2260 or 2280, SATA3, M or M+B keyed M.2. if your slot supports 2280 drives i would suggest purchasing the samsung i linked above.
How muc was the SSD (It's actually 250gb): https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-Internal-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1473691132&sr=8-11&keywords=256+gb+ssd+samsung
The laptop is not as heavy as some of the other gaming laptops out there, but it is not as light as a business grade one. I use it on the couch, coffee table, take it to the library, etc. It is not a workstation replacement for me, I still have a desktop that I use for most of my gaming/photography stuff. Overall I would say it's a good weight for the specs.
I have this laptop, I'm using the 250 gb version of this 850 evo (MZ-N5E250BW) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ckO6xbXJHHZKT
It's been running well since Feb, when I get home I can run some speed tests if you'd like.
IIRC the transfer of the OS was really painless as well.
Will you be running any CAD programs ? If just for gaming and video editing, the additional Video RAM won't give any gain in performance. The SSD card however will give a big boost to boot time and overall performance but I just don't think the extra 185 dollars is worth it-- it would be much better to purchase this Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB M.2 SSD and install it your self which is not hard to do...With that, you save some money and you get a bigger SSD capacity (128 GB VS 250 GB)...
By chip cards, are you referring to M.2 SSDs? (Like this?: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-Internal-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1467943519&sr=8-6&keywords=m.2+ssd )
If so, you need to make sure your MOBO is compatible with M.2. While every drive is different, I would say they're faster on average.
This is the one that I bought. It's big enough for Windows 10 and all the programs that I normally use and the increase in speed for something as simple as loading iTunes is pretty substantial.
I have read that the Samsung 950 Pro is faster than even this model but for right now this one works fine for me.
i am using this one as my second ssd slot and it work nice . I never face any problem because i bought on black friday i got thing near $69 check it out LINK
One of the questions note that I could add in a Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2 SSD.
Yes , you can add that SSD. And the good thing about adding the SSD yourself instead of paying for the laptop to come with it, is that it works out cheaper. For example , if you buy this Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2 SSD, for $81 , it is larger than the 128 GB you would get pre-installed in that laptop for $100 more....It is also cheaper..
Make sure not to spend money buying the $1250 version. Just buy the $1000 and add a SSD yourself. I'm buying this one myself.
Plus the 960M wont utilize the 4GB of VRAM at all since you won't be maxing demanding games that'd be using those 4GB.
24-25KD
80 US Dollar equals 24.04 Kuwaiti Dinar
Edit: SSD's dropped a lot in price compared to two years ago.
this is what I found. with no experience with installing an extra ssd, you think it would be okay to just follow tutorials online?
Wow thanks for the advice! This is a lot to process at the moment so sorry if I took so long to respond.
So assuming I get the 1TB HDD laptop, I can order this and get the results of both SSD and HDD?
Is it possible/advisable to do it the other way around (buying the SSD one and getting an internal HDD)?
And finally, I'm not sure if I'm estimating the value of the SSD correctly. What does it make faster exactly? Is it safer/less prone to damage than the HDD? Is it worth it to get one that's 750gb less than the HDD, in your opinion?
Thanks again, you've been a huge help :)
The Windows OS does take up alot of space. I was at around 220gb when I got my model (I got the 256gb version) so the 128gb model will have like 90gb of usable storage. If you want more than 128gb but can't find a good deal, you have the option of manually swapping the SSD drive. You would need to buy this M.2 SATA SSD (lowest price I could find) and you would need a T5 screwdriver.
> What SSD would you recommend?
The Dell Inspiron 15 i7559 has a m.2 SSD slot. You can keep the HDD in it if you want. You can find on Amazon a Samsung m.2 SSD (250 GB) for 80 quid.
> And as I'm completely stupid about these kind of things, is it easy to put in/install or whatever?
All you have to do is to take of the bottom cover, stick in the m.2 SSD, put the back cover back on and reinstall Windows on the SSD.
Upgrading RAM & SSD for Dell Inspiron 15 7559 gaming laptop
Microsoft offers an ISO of Windows 10 for free on their homepage, if you want to do a clean reinstall.
> And also, do you reckon it'll be able to run Overwatch and CSGO on a over average settings and at a good FPS?
CS will run on the highest settings without any issues. Overwatch should run on high settings.
Yes, but M.2 SATA drives look like this!
https://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-850-EVO-Internal-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW

So why would my "M key" drive fit exactly into this? That's what I'm confused about!

I appreciate your advice though. :)
Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB - M.2 SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-N5E250BW) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVZTW?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
this is the one i have
For example - https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-Internal-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW
It just fits in a different connector right on the motherboard.
You can also buy SATA SSDs that plug into an m.2 port, and they're cheaper than an NVME SSD. The price difference between a 2.5" SATA drive and an m.2 SATA drive is relatively negligible.
EDIT - Here's an 850 EVO m.2
Compared to an 850 EVO 2.5"
So it's a $9 difference to get rid of the cables.
EDIT AGAIN - Oh snap, the 960 Evo is only $12 more than the 2.5". Go with the NVME.
So, this M.2 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-250GB-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00TGIVZTW and this other one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MZ-V6E250BW-250GB-Express-Solid/dp/B01M211K53 are just compatible ?
I see the connector is slightly different.
I own an older ghost which has 2x M.2(SATA) bays and 1x 2.5inch (SATA) bay, and from what I have seen yours has somewhat the same setup. So yes the 2.5in sandisk SSD you linked is compatible but it will replace your current hard drive. The rubber feet have disappeared over time for me and I have just given up on keeping them on but I would look for heat resistant super glue, dont know about the felt. If you want to replace/add an SSD without replacing your HDD then look for an 80mm SATA3 B+M keyed M.2 SSD. This is what I purchased to upgrade my laptop. Im not sure about the ribbon, but i would be happy to awnser any more questions
Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB - M.2 SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-N5E250BW) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_1ZL5ybWHB7V7X
Then just buy whatever usb 3.0 case. Battlefield loads superfast. You can usually be first one in.
You can buy a M.2 SSD for your Motherboard.
Amazon UK
Samsung drives are generally the fastest.

The SSD would be nice as it'll help your boot times and opening applications by a lot, so I always suggest them if you can get one. The RAM, I'd wait on, until you actually see that you need more than 4GB of RAM.
SSD (you may need to call Acer for a mounting kit or something along those lines for the screw to keep it in place, though not 100% sure), RAM
It has an open M.2 slot. So whenever you budget allowed you could get something like this <strong>Samsung 850 Evo</strong> and put it in yourself.
OR, deal with the wait time on shipping and get <strong>this one</strong> for ~$40 more with a 256GB SSD installed.
What about this?
Yes, you can do that.
What about this?
> 250gb 850 evo
I'm going to guess you mean this one? https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-Internal-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1468873314&sr=1-2&keywords=250gb+850
You should get the Thinkpad 13 its good for taking notes, low end gaming. and many other things. I use it for school I just got mine in June since I am going to be using for school too. What you might want to do is get a new SSD for it since the one in it is laggish, get the Samsung 850 EVO.

Hope this helps you!
Edit: It also has a pretty responsive touchpad.
Is your samsung the same as this one?
I couldn't see the official labeling/branding on the product. Just to be safe, get this. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-250-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW
For gaming, the i5 will be fine , but for the CAD, I would recommend the i7 since it's hyper-threading technology will help in performance. As for the SSD, it depends on the size you want. The Samsung EVOs are excellent and very cost efficient.
Just choose based on the size you want.
You have a 32gb drive, which is super small. I'd clone that drive and replace it with something like this.
What do you mean can't be replaced? I'm pretty sure it's just a regular m.2 drive like this one http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-250-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/
Semi-ninja edit: Nope looks like a different connector https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook-Air-11-Inch-Mid-2013-to-Early-2015-and-13-Inch-Mid-2013-to-Early-2014-SSD/IF188-105-5
Yep, that should work. You will need to take out the hard drive though. If you get a SATA based M.2 drive, you can put it in the M.2 slot, and leave the HDD in the 2.5" bay. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVZTW/?tag=pcpapi-20
how's this one?
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVZTW/?tag=pcpapi-20
I have never worked on a laptop do I need a certain cabling ? I found a canadian one and it seems fine http://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-850-EVO-250-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1453173878&sr=1-3&keywords=SAMSUNG+850+EVO+2.5%22
M2 ssd my bad
Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2 SSD (MZ-N5E250BW) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_uxMMwb8ME48ZY
is the Samsung 850 evo compatible as well?
This is similar to the other thread with the same laptop, just with an HDD instead of an SSD.
In both models the drive is in 2.5", not M.2. With this you can buy a $80 256gb SSD (found here) and put it in the M.2, so you have the 1TB space and the SSD.
I am going to get this laptop.
Sager laptops come with no operating system and come with the drivers. I am going to get this SSD and insert it manually, doing so will save me 50 dollars.
I am concerned about it's physical size, I've think there are several M.2 sizes and I don't know if it will fit; how do I know it will work? And I do hope I am able to manually configure my SSD as my OS drive through the BIOS. I've never navigated a laptop BIOS, but I'm assuming it's not too different from my desktop BIOS.
So something like this would work? And be worth the 20 extra dollars? I am a developer on a budget of sorts.
I would suggest this Alienware 17:
The GTX 970M is powerful enough to let you run Skyrim on the highest settings with a decent frame rate. And due to it's large battery (96 Whr), you should get around 5 to 6 hours on a charge while doing not so intensive stuff (web browsing, watching movies, doing work in Office). The only thing I would also suggest to buy is an SSD. The Alienware 17 has m.2 NGFF SSD slots. You could buy a 250 GB one for around 100 bucks (e.g. the Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2 3.5-Inch SSD), stick it in, reinstall (or transfer) Windows to and you're good to go.
the context for this one was itx
at this point, i've no idea what case size cos nobody knew, and if they responded it was conflicting info
right now it's stx, itx or laptop and it hasn't, there's been no new info
i asked for a definitive link on what would be the best case size on the link on the main post and elsewhere, and nothing
for m2, i didnt know m2 cost about the same as ssd
~100 https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-Internal-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/
~100 https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E250B-AM/dp/B00OAJ412U
nobody said this extremely important info,
in this case of course go with the m2
outside of any missing, inaccurate info and misinformation that im not being aware of, there were many other instances of conflicting info, and many questions left unanswered, which caused more confusion -- and i never mentioned any of those other ones in the entire story up to where the story is at
