You probably would want to get more storage. I would recommend this Samsung SATA SSD.
The video card is sufficient for most medium/high settings gaming in 1080p.
Amazon has the award-winning Samsung 860 EVO (500GB) right now for $84.95.
Great deal, Guardians.
There are cheaper options but this my go-to for a SATA SSD for friend’s builds. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=asc_df_B0781Z7Y3S/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309818716690&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15954839300058121913&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&...
Runs about $75, but can be found on sale for as low as $60, and even the 1TB variant can be found for $100 sometimes.
I can’t say this will exactly solve your problems, but this will make your computer experience so much better. Having a SSD is a must-have IMO, especially in 2021
Having the OS on a SSD over a HDD means your windows response is faster, and boot times will be faster. Essentially the windows will have a faster drive for it to “live” on and it does benefit from faster speeds. SATA SSD’s (~600mb/s) are about 5x faster than even the fastest HDD’s (100-200mb/s). And a M.2 NVMe storage device are even faster (up to 6800mb/s) than SATA SSD’s.
If you want the computer itself to be faster, buy a Samsung 860 EVO, install it in place of the internal HDD, and reinstall MacOS. Profit.
That model was made to be user upgradable. SSD inside the machine is worth it. You can also upgrade the RAM.
You can * run apps from an external, and you *can install MacOS on an external SSD and tether the external drive to the mac at all times, which could make your laptop faster, but your speeds will be limited by USB 2.0. The very best thing to do is put the SSD inside the machine.
Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_NZ38FbTCQSHG5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I’m not sure if you’re gonna get the 1tb, but you could definitely give it a shot. I’d like to believe that they’re all fucked up, but i doubt it. I think i just got lucky.
When you consider your time and frustration, they aren't really that expensive.
Windows 10 has the same basic requirements as Windows 7 and 8/8.1
You're not really going to save much processing power by going to 7 if 10 is running slow.
You can buy a great quality 500GB SSD for ~$100 that will be significantly faster (multiple times over) your existing HDD.
Don’t feel like finding the link since I’m on my phone but staples, best buy, amazon, memory express, Canada computers all have it. Unless of course you specifically need m.2.
Edit: y’all downvoting because I didn’t link or something? There’s a search bar for each of these stores, come on. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/?tag=pcp0f-20 Here, happy?
Looked up SSD on Amazon and this popped up immediately.
Pretty good for $77.
Typing this reply on the very machine you describe. Late-2009 MBP with 8GB or RAM. Replaced the battery and the HD with an SSD in 2016 before leaping from Snow Leopard to El Capitan. It's still my daily driver.
After much research, I chose a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO. I've been quite happy with it.
Edit: Oops. Mine is Mid-2009.
Dude, put an SSD in that thing. Done. If you don't want to be held back by Apple not allowing the latest Mac OS version just put Windows 10 on it. BAM your computer is now up to date and fast again.
Note: If you have the RETINA 2012 MacBook, then you are out of luck, but it's odd that it's so slow.
Hey good for you, it's great to help people out and I like seeing it you seem like a good friend. Put an SSD in there for your OS at the least since it is perhaps one of the best things to do to make your computer quick. Doesn't have to be that particular SSD, you can get an M2 thats compatible for your mobo that's slightly faster but either way any SSD will be very noticeably faster than a HDD.
I just checked your board.
It does not have M.2 slots.
So your only option for SSD is 2.5" SATA SSD. Any of them will work. It is up to you which brand and capacity you will chose. But it has to be 2.5" SATA.
It has to look like this one.
Note that this is not recommandation of specific disk, I am just showing you how 2.5" SSD SATA looks.
From the user benchmark that you posted, it looks like your system drive and memory are really underperforming. How long have you had that SSD? If a while, it may be on its last leg. If you go to replace it, I'd suggest a 2.5" Samsung EVO since it looks like your motherboard doesn't support M.2 drives.
I'd also highly suggest getting another stick of memory. DDR3 should be dirt cheap nowadays. I would try to get the same stick if possible but any brand at the same speed should be good enough. There can be significant performance improvements moving from single-channel to dual-channel. Like yes, 8GB should be more than enough but you can see significant improvements with 2x4GB vs 1x8GB configurations.
It’s pretty solid, but I would recommend buying a beefier ssd from a website like amazon, 250gb for 99$ is way over priced for a sata ssd. You can find 500gb for near that price everywhere. For example: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S
Also you can save on cooling by buying a nice air cooler instead of the liquid cooler
Just a heads up, Amazon has a 500gb EVO SSD on sale for $68
I have one in my PS4 and its night and day difference. Not only Destiny, but every game is much quicker. Highly recommend it. Quick and easy as well.
Here is the link...you have to clip the coupon on the page and discount is applied at checkout.
Bit late but: different types of storage and other add-ons like DRAM. Running your OS requires the drive to do stuff that just using it as a game or storage drive won't, and may cause it to die significantly faster (ie no DRAM or QLC storage). Therefore, it's generally regarded as smart to spend a little extra and get a longer lasting drive for OS.
500 gb 860 evo is just under 60 on amazon right now https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S
The Samsung 860 has probably been the most common 2.5" drive for years now. The speeds are above average and the price is always good. Amazon also has a little tool where you can enter your laptop information and it'll verify that the drive fits your device.
You could also see if your device has a separate m.2 slot inside -- the majority of 15" laptops purchased within the past few years have had both. If that's the case you could keep your 1TB HDD installed and just install an additional m.2 PCIE SSD.
The 860 evo is $60 on amazon. Pretty much the best 2.5" SSD you can get. The alternatives such as the MX500 or the new SK Hynix Gold S31 both are within $6 so I think the slight price increase is worth it.
From personal experience I recommend the Samsung ssd. I got the 500gb cause that’s all I think I would need but it’s relatively cheap. Definitely speeds up your Mac mini by so much! https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S
Hard drive is failing.
Buy an SSD. SSDs also can fail without warning; make sure you get a good quality SSD (not a cheap-o one) and also make sure that you back that up on something else.
Internal SSDs like a Samsung 870 EVO https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ are not too expensive in <1TB quantities.
Something like this?
oh...well i was looking at canada computer, newegg, and amazon, but i guess the non canadian model is cheaper for whateve reason...i dont know if theres any difference, i would assume not, but even then, pretend ur saving on the tax
Would this ssd work?
Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6l6OEbHNWDNCB
I’ll need another one of those blue cables to plug into, right? Do I need the mount kit option from amazon?
The RTX 2060 Ti doesn't exist, that's the 2060 Super. Which will probably be bottlenecked by the low IPC of your AMD FX-8320E.
You already have DDR3 RAM in a DDR3 motherboard. I'm not sure what you want here.
SSD suggestions: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB for $79.99 on Amazon
The loading speed is largely a function of the game's ability to read data from your hard drive quickly. Upgrading your 7200 RPM spinny-disk to an SSD will be well-worth the money.
You will get a better ROI than the $400+ you likely spent on the R9 390. A Samsung Evo 860 (500 GB) is on sale for about $80 on Amazon right now (might find better prices elsewhere - this is for reference). https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Internal-MZ-76E1T0B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S The older 850 Evo model is probably cheaper. Even if you keep most of your older games and media on the 7200 RPM drive as a storage diskm you'll enjoy your computing experience much better if Windows (or your other favourite flavor of OS) and modern games are installed on an SSD.
I used this one, it comes in bigger sizes too. You'll need an external enclosure too, just look those up they're like $10. Altogether you can get set up for less than $100. You just put it in the enclosure, plug it into your xbox and you're good.
Was recommended to buy this SSD, do you think this is worth it or should I wait for another deal
Just gonna leave this here..
SSD’s have really dropped in price, you can get a new 860 evo for $80, or any comparable drive from good manufacturers like crucial for about $60 for a 500gb drive brand new.
Is your storage SATA or M.2? Because that is a drive that would go in your M.2 port. Most likely you have SATA if you have an HDD.
Edit: Here is a SATA SSD 500GB that I would recommend: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=500gb+ssd&qid=1571658770&sr=8-3
Definitely recommend the SSD. As far as Tarkov is concerned, I agree with the above and say reinstall after .12 regardless. I know that's what I'll be doing.
This is what I have and recommend: Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LNMQDbY2PBBYP
Buying an SSD will be a huge difference. I'm a fan of the Samsung Evos, they cost a little bit more than other brands, but I've never heard of any problems with them and I've heard of other brands having problems. The 1TB is $70 off right now on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S
SSD is a solid state drive. No moving components like a HDD has. It’s also faster and will decrease load times more. Here’s the link.
Nice! Thank you for the information! I just ordered a single 8GB stick so now I'll be maxed out at 16GB. I might wait until the holidays/post holidays for the SSD. I was looking at the Samsung EVO 860 500GB one: Here. Thoughts on battery replacement? Are you up-to-date with the latest MBP? I wouldn't even know what to get if I were to buy a brand new one. Hence why I'd like to keep this thing around as much as I can. It's seems that this particular MBP is the the bottom model that can take new MacOS updates when they are released--haha.
Ooooh no no. You don't want to that one. Has to be a 2.5" (I think) for laptops not desktop.
This is the one you want. It's 500gb. Good price from what I can tell. And yeah, Samsung Evo 860 is the correct one. It's been a while since I put mine in, couldn't remember the number.
Yeah unfortunately it sounds like it kicked the bucket, however there could still be hope. A Samsung 500Gb Evo SSD is like $75, also on their website there is a cloning software. Sometimes sticking an SSD in the freezer will get it to boot one last time. (I would wait till you have the new one). Install the software on a USB stick from another computer.
It's a long shot but it might be worth it.
Edit: their* there*
The Evo 860 500GB is on sale right now. $80 at Amazon. For a little more money, you will have a much better experience.
Add an SSD (solid state drive) to your build. This will immensely speed up the computer, I learned this when I built my computer. Asked the same question you’re asking haha. This is a good one!.
Should run Skyrim just fine, even with ENB/mods. The motherboard also looks decent, but that SSD seems way overpriced.(might just be the pcpartpicker goofing up)
Cheaper SSD: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S
It sounds like he mostly just wants to do some tinkering inside. Which is awesome! There are ways to do that even with the amazing system he currently has.
For one, I'd suggest getting him an SSD. You can get him this one or the 1TB version. That'll let him open up the PC and run 2 cables to the hard-drive. It's fun to do and requires hands-on work, and there's little chance he could mess anything up.
I'd also recommend the RGB strip idea. Those are fun and easy to set up, and if you got a fancy kit he'd be able to customize it.
Can we talk about the good number of extra drives (2.5" SAS or SATA) if you wish to part with any of them? Trying to fill out my 24 bay Cisco UCS-C240-M3S, but the drive tray/caddies are so darn expensive, so I really need to cut costs where ever available. Currently running 3x600 Seagate Savvio 10.5K enterprise drives, along with a pair of SSDs. Have begun collecting 500GB Samsung 860 EVOs, but had no idea the price was going to continue to dive so far. I think I was happy to pay twice what the current rate is.
SSD prices are expected to fall and you should see $50 for 500gb of EVO 860 quality and $100 for 1tb SSD deals be normal next year. That being said, spending $60-$70 on SSD right now still makes sense if you have no SSD on your computer because of how much smoother your rig will run. Instead of buying the plus memory, spend extra $2 and get evo 860 if you are planning on buying SSD now.
I'd go Samsung.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/
Especially considering Crucial's support site has the following welcome message on their SSD page:
"You may have read about a recent report describing a potential security vulnerability in our MX100, MX200 and MX300 products as well as another manufacturer’s products. While this vulnerability can only be exploited by an individual with physical access to the drive, deep technical SSD knowledge and advanced engineering equipment, we do recommend you update your drive's firmware for additional protection. You may also consider implementing a software encryption option as an alternative method to protect the security of your data. Please select your drive from the drop-down menu below to initiate the firmware update."
To answer your first question, games will run better on SSD in general, so if you can afford a couple TB worth of SSDs, go for it, but otherwise the HDD will serve you just fine.
As far as SSD brands go, I tend to go with the Samsung EVO line because I've found them to be very reliable over the years.
Transferring the drives to your new build is perfectly fine, however, I would look at getting a SSD to be your main drive that your operating system and games etc. are installed on and only use the regular hard drivers for storage space.
edit: For clarification, the SSD drive would be for increased read/write speeds. It would decrease boot time and load time for games etc.
> SSD upgrade on a Pro it's often worthwhile to swap the internal drive rather than use an external
I was looking at this as an internal SSD for my ps4 pro.
Stupid question but will any 2.5 inch work? And is it difficult to replace at all? Originally I was just gonna get an external one since it seemed a lot easier to just plug in and roll with it. But if it makes that much of a difference I would rather invest in whatever gives me a bigger impact.
$100 for 500gb Samsung 860 EVO is better than that Intel SDD any day of the week.
I have Windows 10 and DCS on mine, plus a few other games.
All in, I'm using 300GB and I have just about everything I really want at any given time on my SSD. Other random large files are on my 1TB HDD.
I might have to move some stuff around if I want to play ArmA and DCS and Skyrim and Dragon Age from the SSD, but honestly it's not a big deal to just clean up every now and then.
If it's the loading time of your games, browser and other applications, I would suggest getting an SSD as mentioned by /u/danstek. If you want to make it even more faster and are are willing to spend more money, you may choose to get PCIe SSD.
Since installing Windows on PCIe SSD is a little tricky and you also need a compatible motherboard, I would recommend getting something like Samsung 860 EVO 500GB.
Once you get a new hard drive, you will need to re-install Windows Operating System on this new drive. You should start by backing up all the important documents, applications and media to an external drive and then unplug that external drive from the computer. Now you are ready to perform a clean Windows install without risk of losing any data.
Good luck!
>100$ is the most I’m spending on this, but really, the lower, the better >So for internal, 1 TB, but I guess 500 GB would be okay too.
> As for G-Sync, I've heard it also adds input lag, so I'm wondering if it is worth it although the usage is typically game dependent?
I'm pretty sure that this isn't the case, unless your FPS exceeds your monitor's refresh rate. The basic idea with G-Sync is that it's a way of getting a V-Sync effect without delaying frames, which means it shouldn't add any input lag - each frame is displayed as it arrives at the monitor from the graphics card.
> I don't have a SSD
0.o
I urge you take the $150, and buy this Samsung SSD instead of going for the G-Sync option. Everything else in the list was just to give you an idea of what I think would be other reasonable things to spend money on, but the SSD is much more important than any of them. It's difficult to express why the faster disk feels so much better, but if you do some casual googling on "is an SSD worth it?" I think you'll find that the consensus is almost unanimously "Yes!"
Meant to add this link sorry-
And isn't the western digital SSD I originally had the M.2 that you're talking about?
I personally have an i5 8600k, ASRock Z370 Pro 4 Motherboard, and 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz (Runs at 2133MHz default. Have yet to overclock it to 3000MHz). However, I upgraded before the Spectre/Mekltdown issue. You might want to go with a Ryzen chip instead. Sadly, upgrading to DDR4 is likely to be expensive given the current state of RAM prices.
For your hard drive I would recommend this Samsung 860 Evo: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1523373038&sr=1-3&keywords=SSD
Samsung makes solid SSDs and that thing is at a pretty good price. I would suggest putting your OS installation and games that are graphically intensive on it. Put your other storage and other easier to run games on your HDD.
I missed the sale for the 850 and now they're all OOS =(
Actually I just found this SATA version of 860 for 190 so I guess I could consider that.
You don't want to store your operating system on an external drive. But you definitely don't want to store your operating system on a HDD. You definitely want to be using an internal SSD to install your operating system on. Trust me, your boot and load times will thank you later.
If you can afford it, definitely get yourself one of these in either 500gb or 250gb to fresh-install your operating system and most-used programs.
I just did a quick search and a 500GB Samsung SSD is only $80 right now.
I copied someone else's comment

> Ok so I just realized I know nothing about SSD and can't even compare those two cards. I feel like the Kingston will still be good enough for my use but I'll look up info about SSD and see if the better one is worth.
How much is the 860 Evo 500GB for you? Amazon.com shows $82.99 in the US. Edit: Newegg has the same price as well.
Edit: the crucial MX500 looks like a better deal at $67 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820156173

$10 more at Amazon.

It's $99.99 on amazon right now.
Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fh60AbJWDSR66
$129 warehouse deal...which is usually new/return.
You have to do a lot better than 125 for used ones
Literally any 2.5" SATA drive would work-- HDD, SSD, or SSHD of any brand.
Unless you actually need that 1TB of space at that cheap of a price, definitely get an SSD instead. 500GB for <$90 is a steal for the performance difference.
Also, while you're in there... I'd suggest taking the below preventative measure for your SATA cable while you're at it. The 2009-2012 models are bad about cables failing from the bends and/or the ribbon shorting out against the chassis, and replacing drives/moving this cable seems to make it way more temperamental no matter how careful you are.

Geek Squad Repair Agent and technician for over 15 years here. You have more than likely damaged the hard drive in the impact. These things are insanely sensitive to G shocks and impacts. I'd strongly recommend replacing the hard drive with an SSD as these are not susceptible to the same impacts, and also have the added benefit of speed.
There is zero need to replace the laptop. A repair would suffice. You wouldn't replace a car because of a flat battery, right? I don't know what size you'd require, but a 500GB SSD goes for $50 on Amazon.
You will need to borrow a friends computer and internet, and have a flash drive you don't mind wiping. You'll then install the new drive, and then create the Windows Install Media on your friends PC using the flash drive. This is created using the Media Creation Tool linked below. Data transfer from your broken drive may be possible using a SATA to USB cord, around $10 on Amazon.

Firstly, there's a major difference between being DOA and working for a matter of weeks before failing. The latter is tremendously worse, as anyone without a backup solution has lost all of their data.
Secondly, any hardware manufacturer is capable of some DOA devices. That does not mean Samsung and Adata drives have comparable endurances -- you need to consider the statistics of the distribution, as a whole. We can do a quick analysis with a much larger sample size than your personal experience of owning a single Adata SSD and a single Samsung SSD:
Here is the Amazon link for the Samsung EVO 860. It has 33 critical reviews containing the word "fail". Out of 4,372 total reviews, this is 0.75%.
Here is the Amazon link for the Adata SU655 -- the same drive that failed for the redditor in the comment I linked. It has 20 critical reviews containing the word "fail". Out of 310 total reviews, this is 6.5% -- about one order of magnitude larger.
Obviously, this is not a thorough, extensive analysis, but it's probably first-order accurate as a comparison and hopefully you get the point.
Best update I did on my 2012. I put this one.
Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_dWHeFb27KH77D
I also maxed out the RAM.
I mean, that would solve any loading, hard drive, or page file (low RAM) issues you might have with SC.
I edited this into my other post, but SC is also very RAM hungry - I was clocking 27 GB of allocated RAM the other night when playing. So if you have 16 GB of RAM + an HDD, and you run something that tries to use more RAM then available, Windows will automatically use a chunk of the slow HDD as fallback RAM (this is called the page file ).
When SC is trying to load stuff into active memory of a page file on an HDD, the game performance really goes to shit.
IMO, it is worth it to get a cheaper SSD to put your OS and Star Citizen (and other loading-intensive games) as a placeholder until you can afford the NVME drive.
A 500 GB Samsung Evo is down to like $80 on Amazon. Even a 250 GB one (like $40) would be enough for Windows and SC.

Same price on amazon
Are you sure the price tag is $500 (if you're in the US)? RAM from OWC is $160. The 8GB RAM kit is less. A Samsung EVO 500GB drive is $150 on Amazon - I believe any SATA III drive will work, and I think I have an earlier model of this one on my 2010 MBP (which takes SATA II, actually). Battery is about $90 from iFixit. That's more like $400 if you're content to DIY.
For the stuff you do, that will be a very noticeable upgrade, especially going up from 4GB of RAM to 8 (I also don't think 16 is necessary for what you said you do).
If you really got that computer from a pawn shop for $250, then you got a very good deal! Putting another $400 or so into it is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. For what you are doing, I bet it will be perfectly usable for at least a couple more years.
Just go with a Samsung EVO series. I know you said under $100, but the EVO lineup has a good reputation and aren't completely unreasonably over your budget limit. However, if you're strict on that $100, then WD and Toshiba have options that fit your budget.
Samsung has their own free proprietary software called Samsung Magician that not only allows you to tweak the drive, but also perform an easy clone onto a new one.
Just figure out what you budget for one would be and go from there. I purchased a "middle of the road" storage wise and was a really decent deal. i also purchased a mounting plate, not required, to assist w installing. here's a link to the one i bought from amazon. prices may vary depending on location of coarse.

I'm not sure what system you're playing on, but I've seen both PS4 and Xbox One users who benefit greatly from a SSD. I haven't gotten the money to afford one yet, but they seem to make a very noticeable difference, typically cutting it down by more than half. This tends to be the next step and/or known solution, which I say because it seems you have already investigated if Internet was the possible culprit. I play D2 on a Xbox One myself, and the loading times definitely feel unbearably long, no matter the activity or destination. 3-5 + minutes. I guess it helps to use that time to grab water or browse my phone during, but they do get annoying, so I understand your frustrations.
I know, it's unfortunate that in order to have any hopes of lessening the duration of these load times, many have resorted to paying out of pocket just to solve this problem, but I'm afraid there's little Bungie can do about it. It's about hardware of the system itself, not so much the game or servers, or even some pesky bug. Destiny's growth and where it is now, means that there's far more the system needs to work on loading than there was before. In fact, I've noticed other users say they've had this problem with other games, as well. Yet, PC players are generally unaffected.
I can't provide much on external vs internal SSD, or if internal affects warranty (which I think I remember that being mentioned before on another thread), but the most common I've seen was by purchasing an external SSD (Amazon; Samsung ones work well or Amazon Basics), and putting Destiny on there. I advise to go for 500+ GB, not below it, and you'll also need an Enclosure. With every thread I've read about this, loading times went from minutes to now only a few seconds-- every single penny gone into the purchase, absolutely worth it. I'll post a link I saved from users who bought this one and also recommended it, and if it can help give you an idea! 'Hope this is able to be of any assistance.
Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_.Qw4BbX96E2J5
(It's internal, but I know there's an external version and there's a bundle that comes with the Enclosure. Either way, again, it may serve as an example to give some sort of idea.)
Edit to add: I've forgotten to bring up that with earlier and upgraded versions of a console, the less that players ran into this problem. But unless you were planning to, say, buy a Xbox One X (which I've seen some say that this was an improvement from the standard X1) or the newest PS4, this can be a far cheaper alternative and something you have more room to experiment with.
I think you're wrong, and here's a list of reasons why I think that:
1) A Samsung 860 Evo has a base price of only $110 anymore. That is pretty freaking cheap. And its on sale right now for $71 and has been $90 or lower for the last 60 days.
2) You can sit around for forever because "it might be cheaper later", and have to suffer with a slow HDD all the while. What is your time and enjoyment really worth?
3) SSD's make everything fast right off the bat, which makes a load of difference for installing Windows, updates, and games
4) Migrating Windows from one drive to another is a pain in the ass sometimes, and more headache than it's worth.
This is the one I got, along with the Amazon enclosure. It was actually 500GB: Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Q9pjCbWEYH3XE

Just picked one up
For sure.
I think OP meant to say 'They want the best perceived performance for the price tag'.
A lot of people don't understand GB/TB amount on the drive doesn't equate to file transfer speed/how fast the operating system will run on it which is where SSD's show their prowess.
After all your storage type is one of your most important components to your pc (alongside your CPU, and ram). Like I mentioned briefly above; your operating system/most all your files run through your HDD/SSD.
The speed of your computer is highly tied to your choice of storage media. If more people understood that; they'd likely make the switch.
Like the title suggests, for the price to performance; SSD wins it everytime at least for my builds.
The real LPT is even if you don't want to put much down on your SSD; get a cheap one in your budget to boot your OS or games from (so you get all the speed advantages of using a SSD), and then use your previous or buy another HDD as a secondary drive for any file storage or media you don't need to boot as fast.
I've saved so many of my relatives hundreds-thousands of dollars on needless upgrades who previously thought their computer was borderline unusable just by having them get a 500gb Samsung Evo 850-860 SSD.
$90 directly from Samsung, $75 if you trust Amazon.

I have a 22-pin (7+15) that goes to an ESATA and USB. I'm running that in to the USB on my computer.
I don't know what BIOS is.
And yes, it's a 2.5" SATA drive.
Here's what I have:
-22-pin to USB and ESATA bought this by mistake because I didn't know ESATA and SATA were different but I use this because to connect via USB because the other one doesn't have it.
-22-pin to SATA I ultimately want to use this one so I can mount the drive inside the tower.
I’m using a Samsung 860 EVO SSD. Link here.
I’ll look into how to effectively use proxy media. I opted to work with source media to preserve storage space.

What will you be using it for? You want to make sure you get yourself a solid NVMe. A cheap NVMe may be slower than many SATA SSDs.
I'm not sure if I'm explaining well.
This is the type of SSD I'm talking about 2.5" In the second picture there you can see the port on the side that's where the adapter would plug in.
This is the USB to SATA Adapter
This combination will make it relatively simple to make an exact copy of your current HDD while it is still installed in your computer. Once the copy is complete you can simply replace the drive currently inside with the new one and everything should work exactly as it did with the old drive. Problem solved and buys your laptop a few more years or more.
And here's some instructions on how to clone drives Cloning
I like to use Macrium Reflect as the software personally but different people find different programs to be easier or "better" then others.

For SSD, any Samsung, Western Digital or ADATA (don't know, personally, about any of their 512 GB ones) SSD will be fine (keep in mind that M.2 SSDs are faster and usually more expensive than SATA SSDs). For the CPU Cooler, I'd look at some Noctua fans or the Cooler Master 212 evo

Hey u/Comprehensive_Ebb_24,
I took a look at the facebook and offerup links you posted and would recommend you go with the top offerup link (https://offerup.co/JIrQdXl2Zbb)
It provides the best performance for 1080p gaming, has good quality components, and looks like the owner actually put some effort into assembling the computer with a focus on cable management. The only downsides that I can see are that 1) the case is somewhat big (16.93" x 8.27" x 19.57") and 2) the hard drive is a an HDD (mechanical disk) instead of a SSD (electronic storage).
For #1, you or your son could easily (in the future) purchase and move the components into a smaller case if preferred.
For #2, I would recommend purchasing an SSD and using it as the main hard drive because of the significantly faster performance in everyday and gaming tasks.
Wrapping up, you can easily find a used 1080p monitor (ideally IPS panel) for under $50-60 such as this (I'd offer $50).
So your final cost would be ~$450 + tax ($350 computer + $50 monitor + ~$50 SSD)
Estimated Performance: I used this helpful tool to compare the CPUs and GPUs of the various FB and offerup builds.
You can clearly see that the first (offerup - MD) and last builds (FB - CA) with the RX 480 GPU offer really high framerates (~90) on high settings for 1080p gaming. If you scroll down further, you can adjust the graphical settings (low, med, high, ultra) and see the expected performance in various games.
Just get a good 2.5" SSD and reinstall Windows on it. You can get a 500gb Samsung 860 Evo for $54.
I'm just saying if he's gonna have all the trouble of opening it and taking it out and putting a new one in and everything else, at least to make it worth it. If he already has an external storage even a 500gb ssd which costs less than $60 (link) or (1tb evo 860)is a better option. Anyway it's up to him to decide.
A new mouse and peripheral software should not contribute to a slowing of performance when using your PC at all. Unless of course the software in question is some sort of bloatware that is constantly running in the background, which is highly unlikely given that it is a first-party program.
What I can confirm is that your computer is just slow in general. And the CPU is not the problem. 8 GB of 2400 MHz single-channel RAM will bottleneck the performance of a 9th generation Intel processor pretty hard. Definitely upgrade to 16 GB of dual-channel (2x8 GB) 2666 MHz RAM.
Aside from that, Kingston SATA SSDs are pretty much the slowest of the SSDs out there. If you want to improve your load times, upgrading your storage is a great place to start. Switching to a 500 GB Samsung 860 EVO will set you back about $55, and the new RAM will cost $65, but it'll be well worth it.
So, here's what I suggest:
Change the CPU to the Ryzen 5 3600 (200$ on Newegg), it's a much better CPU and on the box of your motherboard you should see a sticker saying "Ryzen 3000 Desktop Ready" which confirms that your motherboard is ready for the Ryzen 5 3600
Add an SSD and install Windows on that, I suggest this one which is a really good one with DRAM on it and a good price: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=pd_ybh_a_74?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=AJMVQPRQJV6ZMTEC9MPF
Change the PSU to this one which is enough and it's a good PSU with nice all-black cables and a way better price, not even close: https://www.walmart.com/ip/EVGA-BR-Series-500W-80-Bronze-Power-Supply/868721783
Finally for your case you can mount the radiator of the liquid cooler on the top, but you also want to add some fans, that case supports one 120mm fan at the back and two 120mm fans in the front, the best solution would be to get this three-pack of nice RGB fans that is sold for a really good price and these are not cheap fans, InWin makes good products: https://www.amazon.com/Sirius-Addressable-Performance-Cooling-Computer/dp/B07PXNCQCG/ref=pd_ybh_a_18?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8EQFY2Z9KKBS647ENA0Y
And that is all, with these changes you would save a lot of money on the PSU so that you can get a much stronger processor, a nice 500GB SSD for Windows and programs and three nice RGB fans to improve the airflow inside the case
Then this 860 is perfect. Actually $2 less on Amazon:
Or 250 GB for $28:
If you can afford it I would strongly recommend going with 500 because 250 fills up fast. If you can’t then this drive for $28 will do the job.

I literally upgraded to a SSD last night. Took 20 minutes to put D2 and 2 other games on it. It's feels like half the time to load to orbit, tower, or anywhere I want to go. Will any internal SSD work? Like this for example?
I'd suggest you check up on any hardware issues with etrecheck. My sister's unibody mbp 2012 had the same issue and it turns out the hdd was dying. No surprise there. It was an 8 year old hard drive, after all. Replaced the hdd with a ssd and it ran well again. It has 8gbs of ram and works fine for what she does. (Web browsing, MS Word, Zoom/Facetime) You should also check your battery's health if you've never replaced it. My sister's stock battery died this month.
I hope that helps.
Hello NewMaxx. Thanks for helping so many people.
Do you think Samsung 860 EVO 500GB is better than WD Blue 3D 500GB? Mainly curious about quality/longevity since performance is probably similar enough.
If they were the same price would Samsung be a better buy for every use case?
Yeah. The iPad Pros with apples processors already beat the current intel MacBooks benchmarks that they offer. It’s definitely going to be worth the wait. Especially if you ever want to run current iOS apps on your laptop. The best bang for your buck right now would be to upgrade to a Samsung evo ssd for around ~$100. 4gb of ram is very small for a computer too. I would upgrade that as well for another ~$100.l to maybe 16GB. So for like $200 you can upgrade your current system to hold you off for the next 6 months and the trade off is that you’ll be able to buy a computer that will last you another decade. Just make sure when you do make that upgrade, get enough ram and storage so that you don’t run into this issue again down the road.

It is a safe bet that you do not have an M.2 slot on your laptop if you have a mechanical hard drive so getting a regular SSD is your best bet. They're getting pretty damn cheap these days. They're absolutely right too. It will feel like a brand new computer when you slap an SSD in there. I had been using a laptop from 2012 up until this year and the only upgrade I did was swapping to an SSD a few years back.
I would strongly consider upgrading that first:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/
I think that might help your performance issues a lot.

You can buy a faster SSD that has ~200 GB more for 50 bucks [1]. Someone else said that this is a 'Data Center' drive which is a very valid point but this drive is from 2013 and who knows how thrashed it has been by heat / write cycles / etc. Not sure if CrystalDiskInfo can be spoofed but frankly people go to lengths to make a few dollars.
Yeah, we could go the 500gb route.
I'd get a Samsung 860. Known for their great reliability, controllers, build quality, ext.
You can put in more RAM if you want, but by time 8GB's gets outdated and unusable (8-10 years?) the whole laptop will just need upgraded or replaced.
Would this work:

Also does the Xbox have trouble recognizing the SSD enclosure, cuz I have a 2TB WD easystore external HDD and my Xbox only recognizes it 2/3 times?
Yeah the old HDD in the PC would really slow it down.
I'd just get an Samsung SSD. Very reliable, well built, great controller, ext.
Better than this? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_ms33DbY8P0E0W
Reinstalling Windows should not be hard. You will need to plug in a new drive (preferably a solid state drive).
Assuming your old hard drive was SATA, you can just buy a SATA SSD

Here is a good video for replacing the hard drive in a desktop:

Get something like this...

And your hard drive problems will be nonexistant. If you've never had an SSD you won't believe the difference.
They typically come in either 2.5" form factor (which looks like this), or what's called an M.2 form factor (which looks like this). You'll need to open up your laptop and see which one it has. Then buy one like that. Obviously the branding might not be the same in your case, but the general size and shape will be.
Ok, do you think this ssd would get the job done? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/?tag=pcpapi-20

This is what I use. you can probably get away with the smaller, 250 GB drive if you wanted to save a little more. I would only keep the games you actively play stored on it and everything else on an external HDD. I had a bunch of games on the SSD for a while and started noticing more crashes so I transferred every off except the division and destiny and haven't had any issues since. I think it can get a little overheated if there is too much stuff stored on it which causes the crashes.

This is what I just picked up. Anything I need to know before I install it to keep from ruining my PC?
Alright so I guess we are making a bit of confusion here. Both the SSD you just showed me are m.2 type. The differences are that one is NVMe and the other one is SATA (One is very fast e.g. 1600mb/s, while the SATA one is max 500mb/s).
You can only put 1 of those inside the E490.
The other bay you have, is a SATA type slot.
It means it can support an HDD/SSD such as this model for example:
Obviously the speed will be limited (due to SATA port limitation), that’s why in my case I just put inside this slot a simple 2TB HDD. I decided to go with hard disk because if you want a 2tb SDD will be like super expensive:
Summarised:
You can only put one of the SSD you posted inside the m.2 slot, the other slot is only for SDD/HDD in the 2.5” size.
M.2 SSD can also be: PCIe - NVMe (SUPER fast technology but expensive, speed between 1600/3000 mb/s)
2.5” SATA models SSD/HDD: can only be SATA type, and the max speed for HDD is 6mb/s while for the SSD can be something like max 500 mb/s.
In my case: I have a 512gb PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD (1600mb/s speed, expensive)! And a 2TB 2.5” SATA HDD, (fairly inexpensive), slow but with a lot of memory to store stuff.
I hope I’m clear enough, feel free to ask more!

Is that ssd good?
There probably are ways to mitigate the felt "slowness" of the hdd but seriously ssd make a wooorld of difference to the entire experience, not just in you case. Boot time, loading screens, transfer rates, copys, extraction, compression, renders, installs, navigation. Everything your pc does will be helped in some way by upgrading your OS onto an ssd from an hdd.

Any samsung evo sata drive is going to be the one you want. They're also very cheap now, under 100 dollars.

There is no 16GB 2070. The only 16GB Card is a Radeon VII and the 2080 beats it in performance. For AAA Games 1440p 144hz a 2080 is needed or else you may have to lower some settings to achieve 144fps. for a 2000 dollar budget a 2080 is ideal. It is not overkill for 1440p but for 1080p it is. There are cheaper 2080 models that go for $700 like the gigabyte gaming OC. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ssd+500gb&qid=1552955342&s=gateway&sr=8-3

The one you can buy is all TLC SSD´s. From the qualtiy, I could recommend you Kingston, Samsung or WD here are some examples:
Samsung:
Kingston:
WD:

Kingston is cheap for ssds with low capacity if you want more space use the WD. Samsung is an allrounder
Installing an SSD into it is always a good idea, as SSDs have much faster read / write speeds than HDDs. It's a night and day difference.
The SSD you buy needs to be 2.5" in size and needs to be SATAIII-compatible. These SSDs should work, for example:
Before your insert the SSD, backup all your files via Time Machine (if you want to keep those files)! After the new SSD is installed, you can reinstall macOS via Internet Recovery and then restore the Time Machine backup.
It would be a good idea to upgrade the RAM as well, if you haven't already. The Mac Mini has two RAM slots and supports up to 16 GB RAM in total (2 x 8 GB RAM modules). The RAM needs to match the following specification:
PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz, 204-pin
This RAM should work, for example:
This video shows you the procedure of the SSD and RAM upgrade:
Do you know if this SDD plug right in the same spot in my laptop?

I just bought a 500gb SSD for only 85$, i'd highly suggest getting one for gaming. I'm able to load Ark with 31 mods in just 6 minutes, compared to before it took 25+ minutes. Same with a few other games, everything will load faster, any loading screens/launching game.

Also, i'd grab Monoprice 18-Inch SATA III 6.0 Gbps Cable with Locking Latch and 90-Degree Plug - Blue

Should be set to go, trust me its worth the extra speed, and its super cheap.
These work great for the Xbox:

The issue is surely the hard drive you swapped. It wouldn't surprise me if the drive could either be in the process of failing or has a lot of failed sectors. Highly recommended to perform this exact fix but this time with a SSD. You will love the results as it increases the speed of a computer by about 10-15 times with the same hardware.
Given they've become extremely inexpensive as well in the recent years: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1539782613&sr=1-3&keywords=solid+state+drive&dpID=31CElO-B3PL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
A 500GB 860 EVO is $87 right now. The reasonably equivalent Crucial MX500 is $85 for 500GB or $55 for 250GB, and it can fit in an M.2 slot if you have one.
The idea isn't "throw away all your hard drives and use SSDs exclusively" unless you are made of money. You just put your OS and your most used applications on a small SSD and store everything else on a hard drive.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/
It is now $89 at Amazon.
I got a 500GB Samsung SSD from Amazon for $120 a couple of weeks ago.
Do you advise me to buy it from Amazon for $18 more?
Prices for SSDs have been a lot better recently. An SSD of 500 GB costs $100. Samsung SSDs are what I'd recommend.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S
That's a 2.5 inch Sata Drive though. Depending on your computer, the size might be too big so you'd need an M2 SSD.
It is, and it will save you a ton of money. This video shows the procedure:
The SSD you need must be 2.5" form factor and must have SATA2. Those are the only requirements. Don't worry should it have SATA3, this works just as well, as SATA3 is fully backwards compatible.
This one should work, for example:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S
PS: The MacBook Pro 13" 2015 would still be a great update in many respects, but if you simply intend to make the MacBook you have much faster, then the SSD would be the far cheaper way to go about it.

If you are pushing for more storage, get a 3.5 HDD ( TB size depending on what you want) with 7200rpm, not as quick as an SSD, but good enough for having more memory without paying a lot.

Similar times for me on xbox. About 10 seconds to fast travel anywhere. Never timed the initial loading times. I bought it originally for destiny 2 and that made a world of difference in there. You need both of these to make it external. Easy to put together in under a minute. Then just transfer whatever games you want onto it. I'm not sure if it was really the issue, but for a while I had a lot of different games on there and I started noticing the game freezing up and crashing, so I transferred off everything except division and destiny and haven't had any issues since. I think the ssd was just getting over worked/heated from having too much stuff on it.

Well, if you order it from Amazon, it would be $150 shipped with prime. So either way, I'd cancel your backorder
You'll barely see a difference. A hybrid drive is basically just a small SSD attached to a large HDD that keeps a copy of data the computer/console requests often on the SSD portion. If 14 is the only game you play, then sure, you wouldn't need 2TB and could afford to put every last bit of data on solid state, but if you play other games too then you'd have a quarter the capacity for the same price, and only slightly better performance.
Or if money is no object, just get a high capacity SSD.
