I have had the same SanDisk Clip Jam for like ten years and never once had an issue with it. I use it almost daily while walking in the mornings. The battery last me the week still, after years of use. It is also an FM radio player which I find I use more than I thought I would. The MicroSD allows infinite storage. I use one card for music, one card for podcasts, and a different one for books.
Yeah no problem, a lot of people have bugs up their butts over "their" wilderness. If you're going with a radio like this and a CD player try an mp3 player. I've used SanDisk and downloaded audible books.

this is what i got for her:
isn't this basically exactly what you're talking about?
I just bought a Sandisk Clip Jam 8GB mp3 player for this. It's like the one mp3 player that is still supported by Audible, and you can use a microSD card to expand the storage. (They also make higher-capacity models and ones with Bluetooth and the like, but the base model's only thirty bucks.)
You don't have to RockBox a Sansa if you just want to give it a folder full of music. /u/xeroxerox, something like this should do you nicely. It takes up to another 32GB in the SD slot, but you'll have to upgrade if you want more than 40GB.
I have the DT770 (80 ohm) and I'm pretty happy powering it off a SanDisk Sansa Clip+. It looks ridiculous though: bulky headphones VS tiny DAP.
The latest version is called the Clip Jam and it is sold on Italian Amazon for under €50.
I use these religiously. They're tiny, versatile, cheap, and can house an additional microSD card. It has a radio receiver and you can look through it by how the music is labeled or how you've organized it. I love having a dedicated music device so I'm not distracted by my phone each time I want to change songs or adjust volume. Definitely get a little silicon case for it too if you decide to get one.
No dice on the GPS feature though.
Buy a $40 smartphone and a 128GB SD card (about $25). Download an app like Poweramp and you're good to go. You don't need to have a monthly phone/data plan. You can just connect to the internet using any wi-fi access to your home internet if you need to download or stream music that isn't already on your SD card. You'll also have the option of streaming.
I still have a few Creative mp3 players, and the sound quality is better than smartphones. Sandisk still sells mp3-only players, but I think a cheap smartphone would work just as well.
Plenty of third-party iTunes alternatives out there to avoid the headache.
The iPod shuffle is probably the easiest when it comes to small mp3 players with integrated clips.
There's also this one by Sandisk which has pretty decent reviews and is very affordable.
You could get something from the SanDisk Sansa line, like this. I had a Fuze with the little color screen; it would play any audio I threw at it, and would even do video if you wanted to watch something on a screen about 1.5x the size of a postage stamp.
I purchased the Clip Jam a few months ago and love it. I generally get 8+ hours daily of non stop play out of it. For the price, you can't beat it.
They're not going to suddenly disappear from eBay, Amazon Marketplace, etc. Can always just buy another.
There's not much available these days. The iPods killed them before the smartphone killed the iPods, but there's still the Sandisk Clip, or perhaps the Mighty if you have a smartphone to transfer your Spotify music to it.
The SanDisk Clip mp3 players are fantastic. They're tiny, have a clip on the back so you can bring them running, will take a microSD card and will play pretty much any audio file you can throw at them. You can pick them up on Amazon quite cheap as well.
I also don't know if you are serious, and this sub isn't for real advice, but nonetheless, here's how you can do it.
Get one or more of a simple, easy to use mp3 player such as the SanDisk Clip Jam.
Buy a name-brand (such as SanDisk, Samsung, or Kingston) microSDHC card up to 32 GB.
Buy songs/tracks as DRM-free AAC files from iTunes and MP3s from Amazon.com. The tracks/files from those two services do not rely on having an account anywhere after you download them.
Download and save the the tracks/files from iTunes and/or Amazon MP3 somewhere on your computer.
Copy the files to the microSD card.
Insert the microSD card into the player.
Give the player to your parents.
Show them how to use the player. Show how them to insert and remove the microSD card. To give them additional or different songs, exchange microSD cards with them as needed or give them additional microSD cards as needed.
Alternative
Install Chrome on their computer.
Install and configure the Chrome Remote Desktop add-on on their conputer and your own computer.
Test Chrome Remote Desktop to control their computer from your computer. You will use it at the very least to assist them if they have questions/need help.
Show them how to how to use mp3 player and how to connect it to their computer.
Either:
Have them connect the MP3 player to the computer.
Either transfer the tracks over to the player using remote control, or teach your parents how to do that.
If I sign up for Amazon FBA and send in products that already sell frequently, do I essentially leech onto the already-existing listing and get most (or almost all) of the sales (assuming I have the cheapest price)?
For example, here's an MP3 player and here's the list of sellers for it. Do I essentially join that list of sellers? And if mine is the cheapest, would I then get most of the sales?
A SanDisk 3 GB mp3 player and silicon case. To go with it, get over-the-ear headphones.
That MP3 player is what I got for my 7 year old son (now 8, almost 9) and a cheap pair of Sony headphones. Couldn't find the exact pair on Amazon, so I linked something cheap with lots of good reviews.
this has served me well for YEARS. I have it clipped to my waist between shorts and side. Be sure to keep it free from water/sweat

manage your show subs & downloads on a desktop with gpodder then use a cheap and cheerful sandisk clip

Many of the streaming services allow you to download music to your devices, same with streaming video. A cheap tablet with a 64 or 128 GB memory card, a couple of power banks, and a solar charger would probably go a long way.
A Walkman is going to drink batteries, IIRC.
You could also get a cheap MP3 player or two like this one. (That's not a recommendation, just an example.) Battery life is good, and you can probably get a bunch of charges off of a power bank. You could start buying music and load it up.
If you go the route of the tablet or the MP3 player. Just don't commit the awful, awful, terrible, no-good crime of illegally downloading music torrents. It would be a horrible thing if you downloaded a bunch of music for free and loaded up your music player with it. Whatever you do, don't do that.
Tons on Amazon but YMMV with the random chinese brands. They are pretty reasonable even with a screen but i’m guessing you don’t really need a full color LED.
If you want a reliable brand/company i feel like SanDisk is good. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VXMY262/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_D83P89F48S6NNM5DSK9B?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
This one has more features (bluetooth, screen) and cheaper but is a secondary brand. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08W5FRXNX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_1GJZ1XM3G190CNT3DAXB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
They should both take little sd memory cards either way for ease of use
Is a small format MP3 player and buying new is a must this one seems ok SanDisk 8GB Clip Jam MP3 Player, Black - microSD card slot and FM Radio - SDMX26-008G-G46K https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VXMY262/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_563MTH7YGRWT14AGYN06

Be prepared for your headphones to cut out constantly - crowded groups and stoplights are hell for consistent bluetooth signal. I go old school for races and have a cheap MP3 player and headphones that are darn near waterproof and bounce-out-of-my-ears proof. YMMV and just my two cents....

If you're still interested in that MP3 player...
If you want something with 32GB of storage or less, the Sansa Clip Jam. Supports FLAC. The Sansa Clip series has been popular for a long time and has seen little change. This is like an MP3 player from 2003.
But if you want a nice MP3 player, Fiio is pretty much the only game in town anymore. The Fiio X1 2nd gen supports SD cards up to 256GB and is $100.
The current 6th generation iPod Touch was released in 2015 and hasn't be updated since then. There really isn't anything "new" about them.
MP3 players are a dying category and there is less available each year.

I think this is discontinued but Amazon still seems to have stock:
UE 4000 is definitely discontinued but fair for price.
The warranty on the MP3 player I believe is going to be 90 days - year, the headphones have a two year warranty but are technically discontinued. Also since they're from a 3rd party Logitech may not honor it.
Together both new is around $75 or so?

Your only other option is a smartphone (Windows Phone or Android) with a 128GB microSD card. Windows Phone is generally preferred because the audio stack in Android is inferior. I'd look at the Lumia 640.

Spotify was having a deal recently: 99c for three months of premium. You can save stuff locally (albums and playlists on mobile, playlists only on desktop), or stream. They have a high quality 320kbps streaming option if you are a premium user. I recommend trying it out if the sale's still on.
Alternatively, if you have a couple bucks to spend, you can do what I do. That is, buy a really cheap Sansa Clip (you could probably get a cheaper one, but I didn't search hard), put Rockbox on it, and pop in a 32 GB MicroSD Card. Whole set up will run you about $40 and you will have 40GB of music available to you whenever you want. Best part -- the Sansa Clip can handle FLAC and mp3 (and pretty much anything else you can throw at it).
