Full spectrum LED, long life. Mine has been on daily since January 2021. All of my plants love it.
FYI - The Venus flytrap is native to the area around Wilmington, North Carolina, USA. Summers there are hot (85-95°F / 29-35°C) and humid; winters are cool (35-55°F / 2-13°C).
If you only have the one flytrap, then a SANSI LED grow light bulb would be enough to supplement your sunshine.
Hi, thank you all for the suggestions on what it could be! For lighting I use a sansi 15 watt bulb ,should I upgrade to the 36 watt if the 15 is not enough?
This is her light It is new, did it burn her and will it keep burning or is this just the price of acclimating her? Her name is Khaleesi cause she keeps having children.. I don’t think I acclimated her correctly to the light..
I'm watering it using the tray method, how do i cut back on the watering with that method? For lighting I have it in a window sill + I have a sansi bulb to give it extra light since its not outdoors.
It's a 15W Sansi Grow Light and I've got it set up 16 inches above the seedlings. It's able to cover the area even if I move it down but I found that hanging it about 10 inches away from the seedlings causes them to point their leaves up.
Yes it is! Thank you so much! I just fertilize it with those miracle gro koolaid-like packets and have it under a very strong light. It’s strong enough for succulents: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCVWFUE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_dl_F3P2BW4HGSENW7442Z0G?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have these.

Fits in a gooseneck desk lamp, or any other lamp with a normal bulb socket. Clean white light. Put it in a timer.
It came recommended on a blog after I did some research into grow lights.
Ditto on all points, but when I was reading for this thread, I was surprised that there are grow bulbs that are 35 W. That's so much power for an LED! The ones here are 400W incandescent equivalent.
My plants really like the sansi bulb. It is $20 and it screws into any regular sized lamp. I chose the smallest size they offer because it is a regular sized bulb, but they also have a bigger bulb (I think it also has a regular sized base but the bulb part is huge) and a light panel. I have one in a desk lamp and one in a floor lamp that both have flexible necks, one for each shelf of my plant stand. Here is a link so you can look at the specs. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCVWFUE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_X1DE1XM9MPFYSPAY7VF8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Do you know anything about these? I watched some videos on YouTube and they seem really great for houseplants, not sure about succulents. CFLs are pretty bad and I’d never use one. Here’s a link to what I’m talking about and I think this may be a good one. (Edit it doesn’t look great actually)

I’ve taken some course work on light spectrums for maximum yield and the seedling phase is pretty critical. The “veg” switch alone from the light you linked gives a very poor spectrum, and may even inhibit proper stomata development. Old fan box with those switches need both on at all times. The light I linked isn’t the one I will purchase. I need something with a better spectrum. Maybe alibaba has more/better options.
Anyways these type of bulbs should generate low heat and more importantly consume low power, seedlings don’t need much. I’m not a fan of cloning or autos either, so that’s out. My veg and flower tents have qbs with meanwell drivers, this nursery tent is literally just for seedlings up to probably 2 weeks max.
I like the Sansi broad spectrum 15w white lightbulbs, i buy mine off of Amazon for about $20. Had them 3 going on 4 years and they still work great for additional winter light.

I use this grow light for my tiny windowless bathroom. All my plants there are happy with lots of new growth. Make sure the light is close enough to the plant and have it on for 8-12 hours a day.
I have the SANSI 15W LED as the hanging ones. It’s the only kind I hang over my plants. I absolutely love them and definitely recommend. For this shelve I use these
>i'd like to order water and a light, but i have no idea where to start.
Ordering water would be prohibitively expensive due to the shipping cost (a gallon of water weights 8.3 pounds / 3.7 kilos).
>for the water, i'm probably going to try to get the cheapest distilled water i can find,
Distilled water is distilled water; a higher price doesn't mean higher quality, just customer rip-off.
>since i'm assuming brita-filtered tap water won't work.
That is correct. You need a water filter that removes the minerals. A ZeroWater filter will do this.
>but for the light, i'm clueless.
If it's possible to keep your plant outdoors, that would be best. Direct sun for at least 5 hours a day is the goal. SANSI makes good full-spectrum LED grow light bulbs that use a standard socket. If you only have one plant, then you can get by with a 15W bulb for 20 bucks.
>links to planting material(moss/peat/etc) would also be nice, but i'm less concerned because i have time since my plant will be coming potted already.
Since you only have one plant, a quart bag like this is sufficient.
Here is a good flytrap care guide. If you want more info, there's a link at the bottom of it for a comprehensive care guide.
I've been lighting my 20H walstad tank with two strips of 5630 Leds for almost 3 years. I've had Amazon swords, Ludwigia Repens, Anacharis, Anubias in there that do really well, but I tried some lower growing stuff like S. Repens and dwarf hairgrass and it didn't really take. I don't have a light meter, but I suspet the PAR at the substrate is too low for them. I was thinking a third strip, or like two of these led grow lights in clamp-on gooseneck lamps would be about right for carpeting. I think both of these solutions would fit your budget.

Here is what i used and my plant seems to be happy
A full-spectrum LED light is a great idea. If you just need a bulb, then I like the SANSI models. If you have just one flytrap, then a 10W or 15W bulb would be sufficient (assuming that you have a lamp for it). They also have gooseneck lamps with 1-4 bulbs.
No worries! For the next growing season, you can look at getting some cheap grow lights to help em out until the outside is ready.
I have these bulbs: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NCVWFUE?th=1 and put them in a fixture like this: https://www.lowes.com/pd/ProTorch-1-Watt-Incandescent-Clamped-Work-Light/1002622730
Might be worth it to get one with a better stand though unless you have a good spot to clamp em. I ended up getting some PVC pipes and fashioning my own light stand.
Yes! I got three desk lamps with this and just one of this
This is what I currently use! It’s really done well, hope it helps
Yes, just not with amazon referral codes.
If you're talking about this light, that would probably be okay for seedlings / early growth, but won't really cut it in flower. Cannabis needs a lot of light.
The PAR is the "SANSI PPFD" umols/s/m^2 column on the fourth product picture. How much PAR (PPFD is a unit of PAR) cannabis needs probably depends on the light schedule, but probably around 350-500 if you're growing with typical autoflowering light schedules (18/6 - 24/0). When 2 feet away, that light produces 38.
If you have just the one plant, then I recommend a SANSI 15W grow light bulb (you supply the lamp).
I swear, I searched for "SANSI grow light bulb" on Amazon, and this one didn't appear on the results list.... I shortened the URL for it:
SANSI Grow Light Bulb with COC Technology, Full Spectrum, 15W
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCVWFUE
If you only have the one flytrap, then this one will work great. The GE bulb would be my 2nd choice.
I found this one… do you think it’s better than the GE?SANSI Grow Light Bulb
Yup! I did peppers last year. Had a great harvest. But I started indoors and then moved them outdoors once the weather got nicer. But starting indoors now is great if you are doing seeds.
Switched to solo cups once I had some sprouts, then switched to planters/container potting soil from Lowes/Home Depot.
Used water from a pur filter.
I put these on gooseneck desk lamps with a timer. I think they’re a little more pleasing than some lights and they have a broad spectrum. Very bright, but need to be relatively close to the plant.

The best high you get from weed will be from the weed you grew yourself.
The pot size can be anything you want. Mine are pretty small, actually of all the plants in my apartment, the cannabis pots are the smallest (for the challenge and canna-bonsai aspect). The bigger the pot, the more room for the roots to grow, the plant will probs be healthier and take a little less maintenance. I would say most importantly make sure there's a place for the water to drain from the pot. With small grows, you can definitely see when you give the plant too much water, it'll sag in its leaves, then you kind of find the sweet spot. I feel like I only really need to worry about that when they are younger. When the plants are older, it almost feels like you can't feed them enough.
I must admit, I don't know much about soil. I just picked up the normal soil from my neighborhood plant store and that worked fine. I still added some nutes (because I already had them) but could have gone without I think. Then I wanted to experiment with coco. Then I wanted to experiment with mixing. So that's where I'm at now. Cannabis is demanding and pulls a lot of nutrients from the soil, so I imagine you'd have to add nutrients if you use the same soil for a second grow. If you aren't adding nutrients and it needs it, you'll know, the plant will tell you. And then you can translate at places like growweedeasy haha.
I have this light strung up for a little extra power at night (hooked up to an automatic timer): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NCVWFUE/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Its definitely not sufficient, but my apartment is small so the light isn't like lighting up the whole place at night. If the windowsill weed sucks or doesn't yield much, its entirely because of the light. Unless you have a giant south facing window, the windowsill grow will not get enough light. So you'll have to make some decisions there on what "good enough" will be. I will say the light I'm using is barely contributing, but if I put the young seedlings under it, they will usually be satisfied for a bit.
One thing I also feel obligated to include is that I also have a small fan blowing onto the plants. I had a spider mite problem that I imagine is common with windowsill grows (my windows are usually open). Those things suck, and you can notice them early with slightly discolored spots on the leaves. But the fan keeps them away.
It really is a beautiful plant, and it looks great wherever it grows. If you like the smell of weed, when its heavy into bloom, it'll give off lovely sweet aromas. And there's really no reason to not keep planting more.
Here's a pic of my 4 current plants and overall setup: https://imgur.com/a/pAs6WRK
I got this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NCVWFUE/ so 15 watts.
It is currently like 6 inches away from my string of hearts. brb while i go move them much further away...haha....crap.....
Check out the SANSI full-spectrum LED grow light bulbs on Amazon. One of these will fit in a regular light socket. If you're going to have just one plant, then a 15W bulb should be sufficient.
Also, if you're planning to grow a flytrap indoors year-round, you should read this first:

I would use a full-spectrum LED grow light instead of a "blurple" light. If you have just the one plant, then a SANSI 15W bulb will do the trick.
I use these in regular desk and floor lamps!
My grow light is not that expensive.. it's 15w, Link of the grow light
I use the sansi bulb from amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCVWFUE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_Q97TFbGTZHP44 They also have a hanging light panel.
I chose it because it won a grow light growth comparison video made by another company who then based their new line of lights on the sansi bulb.
Comparison video part one https://youtu.be/Ph-fHrNzMaY Part 2 https://youtu.be/M_V5f-rDMPs Part 3 https://youtu.be/Ddgm9L5owNA Video that shows their line of lights based on the sansi bulb https://youtu.be/J2enRhDPSq8
Not getting enough light. I use this light for my drosera and it works great. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NCVWFUE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'm partial to the SANSI full-spectrum LED grow lights. With just one plant, you can support it with a 15W bulb like this. You'll need a lamp for it, but the bulb uses a standard light socket.
Joel's Carnivorous Plants is a good place to buy.
>so do i need to buy a grow lamp, and if so, could someone link a cheap one i could buy, preferable under $20-30 or so.
If you don't get enough sun, then you'll have to supplement it. This one works great for just a few plants:

>how much water should it have
how often should i water it
Flytraps like to be damp but not soggy-wet. My plants are outdoors: I water them from the top every other day in the summer and once or twice a week in the winter. If you're going to water yours from the bottom, keep the water level down around half an inch.
>should there be holes in the bottom of the pot
Yes. Flytraps need drainage. Joel's plants come with a net pot (lots of holes in the sides). I prefer to use a regular plastic or glazed-ceramic pot with at least 1 drain hole and a saucer.
>is rainwater ok?
Yes, as long as it's clean (if you collect if off the roof, let it rain for a while until the water runs clear). Distilled water and RO (reverse osmosis) water are good, too.
>how often should i feed it?
One trap every 2-3 weeks is sufficient. If your plant is outside, it will probably catch enough bugs to feed itself.
Don't forget that Venus flytraps need a cool (35-50 F / 2-10 C) rest period for 3 months in the winter. During the winter, flytraps go dormant: the traps stop closing (i.e., they don't eat bugs during the winter), the leaves grow very slowly, and they survive by photosynthesis like a regular plant.
Here is a good flytrap care guide. My only recommended change is in the watering category: don't let your plant sit in water during the winter. A little shallow water (0.5 inch / 1 centimeter) during the growing season is fine.
Hello all! I've been wanting to get one (or a few) succulents for my desk at work but I'm a noob and have lots of questions. While I've tried to do my own research, it's always easier for me to learn by speaking with others, so I look forward to hearing from more experienced members.
Sorry this is a bit long, I want to have a good new home prepared for my future plants. :)
Info about space (with lighting question)
Desk in an office with artificial light. Close to a north-facing window but due to cubicle walls, my desk does not receive much (if any) light from the outdoors.
Due to this, I am willing to provide extra light, but due to the office environment, it will need to be white light vs. the more colorful grow lights I've seen. As I'd also like to keep the light situation looking attractive, I was thinking maybe a bulb in a lamp would work. Would something like this lamp work with this bulb? That bulb also comes in a 10W and 24W.
The area I am thinking about placing these plants also has a built-in overhead desk light that is about 1 foot above the desk, sort of a tubular looking light so it would be over a larger area, but I don't have any other information about it. However, I can keep it turned on, as well for even more light.
If the options I've linked above will not work, is there another type of bulb I should be looking at?
For "soil," I was going to get the Bonsai Jack gritty mixture for convenience. Is it okay to put a top dressing on this mix, or will it interfere in some way with watering?
Plant questions
If possible, I am looking for one or two succulents that are primarily pink. I would also like a black succulent. Are there any options that would work with my situation? Preferably, if I can get 3 succulents, I'd like two pink and one black, so I'd like them to look cute together and be able to thrive with the same mix and lighting conditions. I don't plan on putting them in the same pot, so I am willing to adjust watering / fertilizing habits for each plant's needs.
Thank you to anyone who has read this!
