I just installed this right about my 4x4 lock button in my 2010 RAV4, not too obtrusive and my phone hasn’t fallen once.

Not an FSJ owner, but in my JK I got a Scosche Magic Mount which is a magnetic phone holder. It comes with an adhesive plate that you stick to the back of your phone, I just stuck it on my phone's case, and the mount itself is adhesive as well. It is awesome though, holds up on and off road, bouncing around, the phone is held very well. Not sure about the cup holder idea, hopefully someone else can help out with that.

I got the Scosche Magnetic Phone Mount for my GLI and I've only had my phone fall off of it once in the last 3 years. 10/10 purely because you just slap your phone on it and it stays. I even have a case over the magnet on my phone and it works fine.
Next level: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I608BJ8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
$14.99 delivered if you have Amazon Prime. I stuck mine between the fan vents on the dash. Can see callers/songs etc without taking your eye off of the road.
I got this recently and I've been pretty happy with it at its price <$15 point. It sits on top of the left vent so it doesn't block any of the vents or screen. Magnets are really good imo and it's small enough that it's not distracting at all. It does squeak a little bit because it doesn't sit perfectly flat on the dash but it only happens when you attempt to change the angle of the mount so it's negligible. It's also only been 3 days since installation so maybe it will lose its squeak eventually.
I didn't want to put anything on the windshield and the vent mounts I've tried either obstruct the vent grills, interior dash controls, infotainment screen, or sits way too far out to the right to be useful (if it matters, I'm a lefty so having it on the left works in my favor). Basically, I gave up on the idea of vent mounts.
If you want a design that perfectly fits the new gen, check out the phone mounts from ProClip USA (they're $$$$ though).
I love the 11th gen but it sucks not being able to use previous accessories based on the traditional vents.
This has been lifechaning. Even when I don't need directions, its just where the phone naturally goes. MAgent fits between the phone and the phone case. I didn't even have to use the adhesive.
I use this
I have 3 of these across my dash. They come with several size plates to be used on phones or anything else you can think of. I took one of the plates and put a slight curve in it and put it on the belt clip of my UV5R. It holds like a champ. The magnets are very strong and they have soft rubber to keep items from slipping down.
There are two good flat spots in the taco to mount these. On top of the dash, just to the left and just to the right of the instrument cluster cover there are 2 flat spots that these stick to perfectly. I use one for my UV5R and one for my phone.
I've used about 3-4 for my car and this is easily the best one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_SJX3R6ETJZRVZH5ZVHBD?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It's magnetic, so it's easy and to put on and take off your phone plus you can stick the mount literally anywhere in your car.
I went with this but I also have a magnet case/wallet situation it works with. Actually I have two, one for personal phone to the right side of my steering wheel on the dash, and another to the left side for my work phone. I added a usb charging port on the left and have a custom made short USB - Lightning cable to charge that one.

This one works great in my Tacoma. Going to give it a shot in the Tiguan.

I drive stick, but not in a congested city. I also use a Scosche magnetic mount that I got from Amazon here
I was going to detail how it installs / works, but you can see that on Amazon. But I'll say that it works really, really well. Since it's magnetic, you don't have to line it up, like with a vent mount, and you can grab it easily / practically toss it back on the mount. But it doesn't fall off the mount, and the mount stays in place and doesn't droop with the weight of the phone, etc.
Just put the thin mount piece that goes on the back of the phone toward the bottom, so it doesn't interfere with wireless charging. I have mine on the back of my case at the bottom, and it works a treat.
It works well enough that I bought a second one for another car (which I don't dash with). I've had the original installed / in use for a couple of months now.
I got one of these a few years ago and love it

Yes I had to stick it to the interior of the car but worth it imo.
I used this: Scosche MAGDMB MagicMount... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Mounted it on the plastic to the right of the infotainment screen. Works great and it’s very sleek, and easy on/off. Will post a picture after I get out of the office.
I have the small screen and I use a $9.99 magnet Mount called scosche Scosche MAGDMB Magnetic MagicMount Phone Mount for Car, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JMC5ZN3T943VX4FZSV0S
Works perfectly and super strong. Have used those in other cars as well. You need to add a metal sticker to your phone case but no issue. If you have the larger screen good luck. You can use and order custom Mount for your vehicles with proclipusa.com but it will be pricey but it will be made for your mustang (clip between the vents)
It is by far, the simplest, cheapest, and most effective car phone mount on the market.
I'm assuming your phone is overheating due to exposure to the hot sun.
The best phone mounts are those that use 3M tape to secure to any part of your interior, then hold your phone with a magnet. I have bought this exact product for 5 different vehicles and have had absolutely zero issues with it ever.
Simply use it to mount your phone to a part of your dashboard where it is not in direct sunlight. Problem solved.
I use this: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00I608BJ8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
It can magnetically hold the MagSafe charger. I then have a cigarette lighter -> USB-C adapter and plug it in there, and a MagSafe silicone case. It holds it in all driving terrain I’ve been on so far.
The bonus is that anyone with a magnetic mount case can use this, as they can just snap off the MagSafe charger and directly mount it on the mount (I heard you like mounts).
Any simple adhesive mounted magnetic mount will be the most effective and cheapest solution.

Both myself and my wife have these in our cars. It comes with two different sized magnets to stick to the back of your phone case or bare phone if you’re brave enough. Simple, no fuss, super strong hold. Can’t reccomend these enough.
hey, it comes with heavy duty tape. so it just sticks anywhere there's a compatible surface. I opted to stick it on the top part of the radio bezel because its smooth plastic without any texture. Check this one out. Doesn’t block AC vents and doesn’t go on the windshield. Small and out of the way. I enjoy it very much.
Magic mount on amazon to start with. It’s all magnetic and they have multiple options (dash mount,cd holder, and window mount).

Check out this one, the adhesive is really good 3M. You just have to make sure you give the attaching area on your dash a thorough cleaning and alcohol wipe down.
The magnetic attachment is 10/10 because I don’t have to fumble with a locking mechanism while driving.
The scosche are great, magnets are super strong, but not too strong, be sure to use rubbing alcohol pad to clean the area if you get a dash mount. Window mounts can be problematic if some ordinance passes against phones while driving... 😅
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_K5DQGWKTEA450XRZNA6C
I used a magnetic phone mount. It was really the only thing that worked in my manual xD.
Magnetic mount is the way to go.
I have one of these in each of my vehicles. It works great because my gf and I both have the metal plate in our phone cases so no matter who is driving can stick their phone up on the dash. I even put one up next to my bed so I can put my phone on it when I go to sleep.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_O6-6FbE5DC71K
I have the Scosche Magic Mount and it sticks to my 12 Pro + MagSafe Wallet without any added plates. It also sticks well to the Apple Leather MagSafe case with no added plates. It doesn't work as well with a caseless 12 Pro.
I highly recommend the scosche magic mount. Ive had it in multiple vehicles. I originally was turned off by the idea of having a magnet on my phone, but now I don’t even notice it. So easy just to place the phone and have it stick. Very sturdy and honestly never falls off, even when on super rough trails. Looks super clean and it’s extremely cheap on amazon.
Scosche magnetic mount. I also went through a few but I love this one.

Magnetically stuck to my center console with a Scosche Magic Mount, mounted so that it's facing me, floating in front of the defrost switch. With a charging wire routed through the glovebox, and coming up the inside of the passenger footwell to come up under my phone.
Visibility is good enough for GPS, unless you're in fifth, then my knob blocks the screen haha. I'm not one to glance at my phone much anyway, I don't like taking my eyes off the road.
I just got one of these for my truck https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_gIpzBb972A744 Not a gopro mount but It holds great, just put the magnet on the back of your phone case. I placed it right above my ac vent, left of the touchscreen
SCOSCHE MAGDMB MagicMount Universal Magnetic Phone/GPS Mount for the Car, Home or Office in Frustration Free Packaging https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
This one worked great for me but I don’t have a picture. I placed on the left bar inside the storage cubby. It’s nice and out do the way but visible enough.
I prefer mine on the left, but i had a window cling let go and the phone almost fell out the window one hot summer day.. So then i tied a tether to it.
Now i have aux gauges so i can't use anything that mounts to the tach. Plus with my engine mounts the tach vibrates too much to hold a phone anyways.
I'm using a scorshe magic mount above the left center vent on both my r53, r56, and I have a gooseneck window suction on the dash of my beetle.
This Scorshe Magic Mount is what i use in my r53 and r56. Works really well, and it uses a 3m sticky pad instead of a suction cup so you don't have to worry about the pattern on the dash or obstruction the road. Also 1 handed operation which is important for a good mount.
I'd like an answer to this as well. I just installed one, and I found a similar product on Amazon (in the fourth picture) that showed where to put the magnet mount on phones with and without wireless charging capabilities. I'm not sure how accurate it is though, or if it's different between phone models.
After trying a dozen mounts I went magnet a few years back and I'll never switch. I use cases that have magnetic backs to them anyways and it's instant on, instant off, secure (I've had my phone fall off ONCE and that's when I hit a bump so big and sharp it popped my tire instantly), no clips to break or wear out, and no issues when I change phones. I went with a sticky mount base so I wouldn't have to cover an AC vent and it's never budged, even in the Texas summer heat parked outside.
Nah, my samsung (s7 edge)has no problem sticking to my magnetic phone mount without the included metal plate.
My vote would be for a pair of these , at opposite ends of the case would likely do just the trick. I've used them in my cars for a few years now, work great. Never had a phone fall off even when doing stupid things in my jeep.
Schorshe magic mount I have it right before the hump for the center speedo. Works great. Even used it to hold my phone to record an autocross session, and it never fell or tilted.
Easy 1 hand put on and off, has a cable retainer clip behind it to keep the charging cable handy. Low profile that uses 3m sticky to stick to the dash so you don't have to worry about finding a smooth flat surface without too much texture.
I have mine right over the right side driver air vent on my dash. Pretty much exactly where the craven would put it. Using a oneplus 3t. Driving over bumpy New England roads and never had it fall off yet.
I can't believe it's 2017 and people are still using "grip" style mounts.
I've been using the scosche magic mounts for the past few years and can't imagine going back. It's a slim magnet plate that sticks anywhere in your car. Because it's adhesive based, it doesn't block or wreck your vents. Yes the adhesive is removable, I've moved the same mount to another vehicle after selling the first.
You throw a slim metal plate between your phone and case and it's otherwise invisible. Or you can stick it on the back of your phone/case.
Using a magnet means it's literally as easy and place and stick. To remove it from the mount, there's no fumbling or releasing a lever, you just take it off. You can't even see the mount when the phone is hanging. It's strong too, I've never had mine fly off due to a bump or pot hole.
Anyone who's been in my car eventually buys one. Oh and Costco is selling two packs right now, but Amazon is convenient.

Scosche MAGDMB MagicMount Magnetic Dash Mount for Mobile Devices https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_vllKybP4J7MHR
I put mine right above the 4wd dial so my phone blocks the dial but I can use it without looking at it anyways. It's right in reach there.
I use one for my car. Works best with no mod or style shell. Works great with the Moto style shells (have the included wood and also the leather). Works OK with the TUMI battery pack. Doesn't work well with the Incipio style shells, doesn't work at all with the Mophie battery.
I use the Scosche Magic Mount and did not have to use the included adhesive metal plates.
Also I've noticed no interference with any of the mods.
EDIT: Not sure if it matters, but have the Z Force.
I'm currently debating between an iOttie and this magnetic mount: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I608BJ8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
I've heard iOttie's suction is really dang good and hard to pull off even if you wanted to take it off. But magnets are cool..
I use the one in the below link. It is supposed to use the metal plate behind your case, but with the Note 5 and now my Note 7, it works fine without it. However, a smooth case (or no case) is required for it to work without the metal plate. I avoid the metal plate because I use wireless charging and Samsung pay very frequently.
BTW, I've had this mount for over 2 years now, and it has worked flawlessly.
Scosche MAGDMB MagicMount Magnetic Dash Mount for Mobile Devices https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_kJvYxb3YNV92S
I use this Scosche one. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I608BJ8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
My car, 05 Volvo S60, has a little ledge right in front of the gauges. That is where the mount is located, the magnet is between the Nexus 6P and the TPU case, and the device is able to sit horizontally allowing the gauges to be viewed.
I use the magic mount. Stuck the tiny base on my dash above my radio with 3m tape and it works beautifully. Same type thing in the case, very small.
I use a magnetic mount I bought for temporary use until I found a good tablet mount, but it has worked so well I'm going to keep using it. It mounts with 3M tape that works very well if you clean the area beforehand. It came with two thin metal plates, a small one for a phone and a larger on for a tablet. I recommend attaching the plates to a case because they are difficult to remove. It holds my iPad Air even while hitting some very rough areas in the road.
The mount is made by Scosche, I picked it up from Walmart. Here is a Amazon link. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Y8chwbEGH3EZ0
Scosche Magic Mount Just put a small metal plate between your case and phone and you're good to go. I never had luck with the "clamp" style mounts because they were always unsteady and never held the phone tightly.
I used to use one of these.
Works like the couple others listed and worked well. Never fell off the mount. Used it with my Ringke slim case. Just adhere the supplied plate to the inside of the case where you want the phone to be held. Then mount your dock.
Scosche makes a few types of these "magic mounts" along with various competitors, the adhesive one above, one with a suction mount and maybe a few variants of that. The convenience of using a magnetic mount is great. Worked very well with my Nexus 5 (naked), Nexus 6 is just a bit too heavy and poorly designed to hold itself up with a magnetic mount. Needs a case/plate
http://www.amazon.com/SCOSCHE-MagicMount-Magnetic-Mobile-devices/dp/B00I608BJ8
I got it at Walmart, I think it was $15, so cheaper than Amazon. It comes with two plates, a small one for phones, and a larger one for tablets and/or to fit in between the phone and a case. I lost the small one in my couch (the cushions are non-removable), so I bought extras off Amazon for about $5 or so.
I also had the Mountek mount, which fits in a CD slot or some grooves in your dashboard, but it didn't work right for my car. The CD player in my Mazda 3 is in an awkward spot, and it was too wide to fit in the vents.
EDIT: Correct, Android. When I was still using the Uber iPhone I just put a $2 case on it and placed the metal piece (with the adhesive cover still on) in between the phone and the case. It's strong enough of a magnetic pull to still hold.
Magnetic phone mount like this or something similar based on the dash design.
I have a scosche magnetic mount and love it. mount I really like the flexible arm mount but they are all pretty nice.
In the gen 1, I really enjoyed the Scosche Magnetic Phone Mount . Was perfect for the car
Do you have an iPhone? Because if you are just interested in recording when a cop pulls you over (or something else happens) then this may be of interest
Combine that with a neat magnetic mount on your dash and you're good to go!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_OVnzFbG0PDFPM
I've used this one forever, cheap and effective. Place the steel plate inside your case without the adhesive so you can reuse it!
I used the Scosche Magnetic Car Mount but kept the adhesive on and took off the radio surround and used 2 zipties to secure it. It's held on with no problems, when my phone is mounted it's not in the line of sight at all, there's no glare and it impacts the looks of the interior minimally. Eventually I'll use a similar mount but secure it with something better than zipties. You might be able to use a similar method but with a Magsafe mount. This one might work with Magsafe, but won't charge it.
Scosche MagicMount $14 amazon
vent mounts are garbage across the board. and yeah, you won't find one that fits the circular style mini vents. cd player ones are good position, but i find it interferes with my shifting, autos might be ok.
I like the scorshe magic mount (amazon) for my phone holders. i have 4 or 5 of them now, oldest being 2.5 years on my dash above the right center vent on my r53, daily driven outside parking new england weather and regularly autocross and track. never had the phone fall off.
there are 2 cupholders for the mini, 1 is the "mug holder" that is metal high on the passenger center column and works well. one of the only cars that fits a full size nalgene actually. here's an amazon link, but they're cheaper at other stores like outmotoring.com or minimania.com. Also try northamericanmotoring.com and find one used in the marketplace. or fbook marketplace for a mini group.
the other cupholder is all plastic and mounts low on the column. here's an amazon link, but they're cheaper elsewhere
There's 2 armrest options as well, i like the metal one with the flip instead of slide lid, but the slide lid or "ultimate arm rest" i think it's called might offer an additional cupholder.
I've been eyeballing one of these but haven't decided where to mount it https://www.amazon.com/MAGDMB-MagicMount-Universal-Frustration-Packaging/dp/B00I608BJ8
I have the "dash" ver stuck to my windshield. I live in MD, some days it's 100+, no issues past 3-4 years. You have to clean the spot with alcohol first and really well. But having up there for a while, I put another one on near the climate controls. I use that one more for short trips.

I have this one, you can pretty much mount it anywhere and it would work in that spot too, you just need to stick a metal plate to your phone but I'm sure they have ones with clamps if you want it. I have mine on the right side of the center console by the tape deck and it looks pretty clean, I don't see why it wouldn't work where you want to put it.
Specifically this mount, they're great I have two in my van and one in my car.
Amazon has it but I picked it up at Walmart for $13. Very easy to install
Not the best solution but I use this:
magnetic car mount
Directly put the MagSafe charger on it and it’ll stick. Then get a MagSafe case and it seems to hold pretty well.
I use this though since I have an iPhone X:
Magnetic sticker thing
The biggest problem with the magsafe setup is how hot it gets. It stopped charging a few times directly under the sun, so consider mounting it every close to a vent and have the vent directed at the phone

Much better IMO. Use any case you want. Stick a small metal plate to the back. Sometimes, you can even hide the plate between the case and the phone.
I have this one, as it can also fast charge. Works great. Never falls. I highly recommend it.
Honestly, anything by Scoche is really good. I've been using their stuff forever. This latest one that I linked is fantastic, as you can position it right on front of your AC vent, or off to the side, so it stays cool and still within sight and reach. I live in Florida, so my phone would overheat if it wasn't in front of a vent.
just tried it... didn't work on my Pixel 3 or Pixel 4 XL.

I know you don't want anything sticky, but the Scosche really is the best thing for the Volt. And, when you remove it, a simple wipe with goo-gone or even rubbing alcohol will take off any remaining adhesive.

Since the 2017 Toyota 86 has a redesigned, single-piece synthetic faux suede (doesn't seem like Alcantara) dash trim, most of the generic phone mounts didn't work for me as they would use either adhesive or suction cup mounts and that was not an option for the suede surface. I also did not want to block the vent holes, as when I use temperature control I need that vent to actually work as a vent.
What I did was a bit more expensive than I'd like, but it is a great setup:
Magic Mount. I love mine, it was hard to find a spot to put it, but it works great.
Bought this for my Jeep. Wife and I like it so much she got one for her car to replace the stupid vent mount one that keeps falling off.

Thanks for the tip! Looks similar to the Mobius, that may be the way to go. Saw someone using this mount, looks pretty good: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I608BJ8/ Action shots: http://i.imgur.com/ouoxlWsl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/8HXFAADl.jpg

Mag mount, my friend.
Scoche makes a lot of varieties
Extra food for thought, for those worried about having a case on their phone: I have an Otterbox Commuter Case and I fit the magnet for the Scoche car mount in between the plastic shell and the rubber sleeve. Works perfectly.
Besides my Valentine 1 radar detector, the Scosche MagicMount for my phone is up there to be my favorite.
I epoxied some magnets to the back of my otterbox defender's belt clip. I then mounted 2 of these on my center stack. http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-MAGDMB-MagicMount-Magnetic-Devices/dp/B00I608BJ8
What about something like this that you can use to mount your phone in a car?
been using a Scosche Magic Mount for a while now with my G2. I just put the mounting plate between my phone and case and I'm good to go.
I've been looking at these magnetic ones but haven't pulled the trigger yet. http://www.amazon.com/SCOSCHE-MagicMount--Magnetic-Mobile-devices/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1443189184&sr=8-4&keywords=magnetic+phone+mount
I freaking love the scoche magic mounts. I have one on the drivers side with the pivot joint and the flat mount on the passenger side for my iPad when I'm a passenger. Love these things. Put one in the wife's car because she loved it too.

Crap. No way to make a link from this app. Hope the one above works. It's on amazon for around $11 for the ball joint one.
Best phone mount I have found is this one, works really well and is very convenient.
Pretty late but what I use is http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I608BJ8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you want ill upload a picture later showing you how it looks and how it films
>Vent clip one broke the vent, and I don't like having anything fixed in my field of view.
This is why only use the vent one for travel. Vent mounts are a shitty design, too much load on a component that wasn't built to carry it. But for a few days in a rental car, it gets the job done. For my wife and my daily drivers, we mounts like this just above the stereo controls. The one on my care has been there over 4 years with no issues.
It doesn't matter what your opinion is, I'm stating what the law in many places requires. If it's on a mount on your dash, that's fine. If it's in you're cup holder or passenger seat, that's fine. If it's in your hand, it's not. Hands free is hands free. It's not a hard concept to grasp.
Magnetic, strong enough to hold a tablet, and about as foolproof as it gets. I stick the metal plate under my phone case.
Only time I can think wireless charging would be useful is in the car. It would be awesome I could mount my phone on one of these while it charged at the same time.
