I picked up a set of tools for carving clay - dirt cheap and I find them infinitely useful for mmj. The one I use for dry crumble is like a little spade or shovel for the garden. This is what they look like - I’ve seen them at the dollar store as well. Cheap, no real loss if I lose one, lots of shapes, styles. I consider these tool essential in my toolbox. This is just a sample not the exact set I ordered:
I'm focusing on small works starting out and I got this set from amazon that works just fine. There are more sets in the also viewed section that have paddles and things for larger works but I don't need that yet. You also might want to get a special rolling pin or roller to flatten and smooth clay. Also, perhaps armature wire for standing figures or sections and aluminum foil to bulk out your figures so you don't have to use so much clay on them or stress your armature wire. EDIT: If you decide to use armature wire you may want to ask your Grandpa if he can share tools such as wire clippers and needle nose pliers to clip and bend the armature wire.
I just bought a simple set of sculpting tools from amazon

Look up pottery tools, wax carving tools, or linoleum cutters on Amazon. One of the tools should have a loop that's good for scraping away material, like this http://i.imgur.com/3mvWrH1.jpg
(sorry if product links aren't allowed, but this kit is cheap & seems like it would work: http://www.amazon.com/Sculpt-Pro-Piece-Pottery-Sculpting/dp/B005KB7V8I/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1444697384&sr=8-12&keywords=wax+carving+tools)
