Good story, Liz Ricketts of OR is doing great work covering this. Any chance I get I’ll spruik Secondhand: Travels in the New Global Garage Sale. It talks about Accra (and makes me feel guilty/really think about every clothing purchase).
Hi all. Greetings from Detroit, USA. Not Ethiopian but read this bookon some of the neat secondhand markets/manufacturing that are going on in West Africa in Ghana and Benin. In Ghana, there is a neat repair culture for electronics. In Benin, there is a similar market for cars.
I’m interested to hear if anyone thinks there are similar things that would be feasible/desirable in Ethiopia. Here in Detroit, the recycling culture and manufacturing culture is pretty strong, but there are still things being reclaimed for materials (e.g. malfunctioning flatscreen monitors) that could probably be repaired more cost effectively.
Sorry to hijack, if this was not what you had in mind. Cheers all. Congrats on the dam as well.
