I'm thinking 37mm might be a good size. Something like this Seiko solar quartz SNE039, perhaps. Proportionally speaking, 39mm on you is like 51 on me. I tried on a 50mm Shinola, and it was big. I could wear it, I guess, but I'm not sure I would want to.
Check out Seiko Solar. Reliable, solar powered, stylish, thin (10mm), metal bracelet, ~$100.
Need recommendations for a ~$150 not too formal dress watch(on a stainless steel bracelet).
Something similar to a Seiko SNE039 in terms of aesthetics and size(~37mm and a thin case). Or maybe the automatic SNKL45. BUT I dont really like how the "5" looks like on the dial though.

i dont know anything about watches
is this a good brand/watch? i like the look of it
If you don't mind field watches, I would highly recommend Hamilton 9445B. It's a quartz military field watch from 1990's, so you might have to do some digging in the used watch market.
If you need something more former, than try Seiko and other Japanese brands. They tend to make smaller watches than Western brands. For example, Seiko SNE039 is only 37 mm diameter
If you want something much more expensive and even more fancier, Seiko Dolce lineup have more expensive finishes and higher end movement: [link]
Unfortunately, Seiko Dolce lineup is Japanese market only, so you have to find a overseas dealer like the one from ebay to get one shipped to you. For example, Seiko Dolce SACM171
This means that it will be hard to service the watch if you are living anywhere outside of Japan, but Seiko produces some of the most reliable quartz watches out there.
Hope this helps.
After scouring the buying guides (thank you for those!), I've decided that I want to purchase a Seiko watch for my SO, but I'm stuck between these three options. I want to get whichever of these options is the best value. The first one is a solar watch, but one of the reviews as well as the lack of description made me wary that it might not be legitimate. The second is a Seiko 5 watch, but the Amazon description has different measurements than I've found for the same watch elsewhere, which again makes me wary. Do you guys have any advice for me on which of these three watches to purchase?
I don't spend a lot on my watches, so it's probably my nicest one. I've been eyeing Hamiltons, but I can't seem to pull the trigger. I can afford it, but the reason that I can afford it is that I try not to buy things I don't need.
My other watches are:
Seiko 5 Automatic
The Citizen is my nicest watch and I like it. It's worth $130, which is what I paid. It's been ~$200 on Amazon for a while and I haven't bought it because it doesn't seem to be worth that price.

$80 Seiko watch. Looks relatively nice
I like the SNE039, but just looks a little plain.
