I'm starting be quite sold on the SNK and I'm getting excited about getting it.
I have a question about purchasing it online though. Have you ever ordered watches off of Amazon? I live in Canada and a lot of retailers are in USD and the CAD is shite right now when converting so I'd prefer to buy from a Canadian source. I know that my partner has bought multiple casio's from Amazon with no problems but with them... they are a lot more affordable and even if they didn't work out it wouldn't be much of a loss. I've found a couple SNK's on Amazon that have quite a bit of reviews but I get pretty anxious buying things like this online :(.
I usually ask my partner for input because he's really good at this but I can't since it's a gift for him LOL.
This isn't a real automatic, as others have pointed out (its battery powered with a solar panel to charge it). You can get a nice looking Seiko automatic for around this price. There's even a Seiko automatic that goes for around $75 on Amazon (and in multiple colors), but it comes with an ugly canvas band. Toss in a nicer band and call it a day.
Seiko 5 is always good for a first automatic watch. This green one is only about $60 right now. I find that prices fluctuate on the different styles of these. I have the blue dial/blue strap version and I paid somewhere around that when I bought it a few years ago. Right now my version is ~$110. Not "open hearted" but you can see the movement on the back.
It's gonna be pretty hard to find any watch with Sapphire under $100.
Have you looked at the Seiko SNK pilot watches, like this one? They come in a variety of colors and have see-through case-backs so you can see the movement. Also, Seiko's Hardlex is very close to Sapphire on the hardness scale. If my memory is correct, Diamond is a 10, Sapphire is an 8, and Seiko Hardlex is a 7 - tough to beat all that for the price.
Just FYI, I bought one of these early on, I think it was my first Automatic. Got it on sale at Amazon for like $45 plus shipping. Years later I sold it for $40. I doubt you will get the same value retention w/ the Parnis.
When you refer to the $50-$60 version, are you referring to the SNK series? The SNK is ~36mm, while the SNZG is 42mm.
For my birthday my girlfriend bought me my first automatic watch, SNK895 [link], yes I know its another Seiko 5 but so far I absolutely love it. Just one thing I am wondering about, it seems to be about 2 minutes fast per day.
That feels faster than it should be (I've seen people online saying ±10 seconds or 15 seconds per day. So I really have 2 questions:
So I just got this watch as a graduation present. It's a beautiful pilot style automatic watch that can be found here I find I really like it despite it being a little small. Does anyone have this model/can recommend any other bands with the green face?
They've also got them in Green, Blue, and Beige.
I've got the dark green one. You can switch the days to Spanish, which is cool.
This watch comes highly recommended on r/watches because its the cheapest good automatic watch you can get.
But why do that, when you can buy $100,000 watch for $66.29?
There are about a million different Seiko 5 watches. This is the SNK805
These are pretty popular and available well under £100 from the Far East
Don't know where you went to look but here, Seiko Men's SNK805 Seiko 5 Automatic Stainless Steel Watch with Green Canvas [link]
They come in several styles.

If you can come up with 7 bucks. Not sure if this is your style
This is my EDC watch.
If you're willing to be a bit adventurous, you can find green dials for seiko modifications here.
I've seen people order parts from that website before on this subreddit, and the mods have turned out great.
Of course, there's also always the green seiko 5.
Not 50m WR
Slightly over $200 EDIT: Disregard this is 42mm
EDIT2: Don't mean to offend if you are a man but this is similar to your current watch style (only has lume on hands)
There are a few more but no black or cream dial kills your selection. Most field/pilot watches are black and cream. Also pilot watches are 42mm minimum (usually).
Edit: Just saw the other comments saying the same thing. My bad.
The Seiko 5 SNK805. I've only had mine for a few weeks, but I really like. Still haven't found it's strap yet though.
I am currently wearing my SNK805. Love it to bits.
In great condition, found for $5 at Goodwill. $60 new!
The watch you're looking at is that expensive because it's a Swiss mechanical movement, the only way cheaper than that price is to go Japanese mechanical or a quartz.
Japanese Mechanical - Seiko 5
Timex Quartz 40mm
Timex Quartz 2 40mm
I actually got this a couple months ago and just ordered an Olive Weekender that looks very similar. All about the Olive.
Haha, cheers! :)
It's just a variant on the ever-popular snk809 (the most well-known, 'standard' Seiko 5, and a forum favourite) - the snk805; green face instead of black, on the small side at 38mm, which is good for me. I love military-style watches, and wanted to wear it as a casual watch, so I chose green over black as it seemed less 'serious' and slightly more fun. :)
The strap is a 'vintage' brown leather ZULU from ukwatchstrap.co.uk, and I also have a green nylon NATO for it as well.
Replacing a Seiko SNK805 with a pebble time. Can't wait for it to get here!
Watch: Seiko 5
NATOStrap: generic nato
Light: Foursevens Quark Pro
I picked up the one with the green face and a leather strap to go with it (not a fan of the canvas). I'm betting the color combo will look pretty sweet.
Half the weight.
This one is nice, too.
Great third option, 6mm thick.
Yeah, yeah. I fudged by 3 bucks. Wait til one of them is on sale or something.
Sorry, but you're being a pedant. Your own referenced link provides the fact 3 ATM is when it withstands pressures equivalent to a depth of 30 meters. It is the very definition.
I was essentially refuting his point that it was "terrible for a watch" when this is most definitly untrue.
If you wish to be pedantic then fine: A Seiko 5.
>Water resistant to 99 feet (30 M): withstands rain and splashes of water, but not showering or submersion
edit 2: Apologies, Thought you posted the garmin thing. Still, my comment stands.
Some ~$300 mechanicals:
Seikos and Orients
Russian / Chinese, Vostok / PARNIS / Seagulls
Amazon / Akribos / Random Brands
These don't meet your criteria exactly but hope they help. It's a tough price point to hit and have it be a quality piece.
