Yo, real talk, I'm wearing an SNK807 (blue faced Seiko 5 automatic). First time in maybe 18 months I've put it on, completely blemish free. This morning on the subway, was actually thinking about giving it to someone here who needs to start a collection on a budget. I'll give it to you for the price of shipping. I'm in NYC, so likely under $10 for CONUS. Unfortunately I don't have the canvas strap it comes on, but I'll throw in the navy blue premium C&B NATO I have it on now. I can take a picture when I'm home if you'd like. This is the amazon link for more info. Let me know if it's something you'd want: [link]
Edit: Thank you for the gold! First time gilded, much appreciated.
Some of the Seiko 5s are actually quite inexpensive. I'm wearing this one as we speak, and if you set up a camelcamelcamel alert, you can probably get it for under $60 (it was ~$65 when I bought it).
I tend to wear black, white, grey, and some blue, and I'm looking to get a Seiko 5. I'm looking at thiswatch: [link]) in particular, but I'm wondering if I should go with a black Seiko 5 because I wear way more monochrome. Then again maybe the watch can be a splash of color? What do you guys think?
3 of the 5 people I shared an office with at uni wore one of these [link]
So theres a watch thats worn by astronomers...
If you're looking for a nice casual watch that is also stylish, I'll submit this: a Seiko SNK807. Don't let the price point fool you, this is a great value (automatic movement, very well built, stylish and will look good on your wrist...I have smaller wrists too). You can also get an aftermarket leather band fairly easily, and the dials come in multiple colors.
I'm a fan of the Expiditions, but I'll throw this automatic Seiko out to you, too. You'd want to replace the band, and 37mm might be too small for some, but I love mine.
Heads up: It seems the SNK is available on Amazon for fairly cheap. Seiko Men's SNK807 Seiko 5 Automatic Stainless Steel Watch with Blue Canvas Band [link]
I may be interested, if the price is right :)
I wanted an inexpensive automatic watch to try swapping out the strap and the fact I've never owned a non-Quartz watch. I also have a timex expedition on the way as I liked the chronograph on that watch.
I purchased a nice leather strap for this one that should be here in the next day or so.

for those of you who missed out earlier, the blue version is back.
That's odd because the SNK807 which is just the 809 in blue is water resistant to 99 feet which would be fine for hand washing and showering.
the 37mm Seiko 5 Found on Amazon for $74.98. One of the comment mentioned he/she bought it at $55. 3 Camel says lowest price at $40.99
I wouldn't buy from Monster watches if your tried to contact them & they haven't replied. If you are not a fan of metal bracelets & want to change the strap then I would buy this watch on a fabric strap, as they will be cheaper. In the UK Amazon seem to be a cheap source for this watch, on the blue fabric strap it can be had for £77.00, link below. Cheers
No problem! Enjoy it.
Also, here are some variations on the same watch:

looking to buy a couple versatile watches for a 6.5in diameter wrist. what do you think of these?
Have you looked into Seiko? [link]
Would you consider a bundled trade? I have a Citizen BM6010-55A and a Seiko SNK807, along with some nice leather and perlon straps.
This is the one. Had it for a few years now, it's great.

Here are a few - Seiko has so many on offer and these ones I have linked are between 36-38mm diameter, which should suit you by the sounds of it.
I like the last 2 personally.
The Seiko is a Seiko 5 SKN807, (Different last number = different dial color. Blue is 7, Black is 9.) currently on sale for 66$!:

OK, I'm sure this pops up twice a day. I've seen the brand and buying guides, and I'm buying my first real watch. Age of the iPhone, right?
Truth be told, I was sad when I learned quartz movement is better. I will stick to my guns, though, and go with a mechanical watch. I was looking at This Seiko, but in searching Ebay, I've found a bunch of Frankenwatch Seikos, some around 15-20$- And I kind of want to start with that. That's part of the beauty of the mechanical, right?
If someone has the smarts and inclination to help- Any recommendations on what I should do here? Or a promising-looking Frankenwatch to recommend?
Also- If I want to buy a nylon passthrough strap- 'NATO' strap- will that work with these seikos, or do I need that additional pieces- the 'bars' that would hold a bracelet on?
PS: I'm not actually bound to the Seiko style- I just see them as an appealing product, and the price point- rock bottom- is ideal for me.
(Also, sounds like Gecko. I like that- even if I only get a smile a day outta it, still worth it :P)
PPS: This Ricoh popped up- but I can't find anything about Ricoh except as a manufacturer. It's not in the brand guides or, really anywhere. Anyone heard of them?
Like Kazyole mentioned, I wouldn't spend $500-$600 on a quartz or mineral-glass watch and they're all severely overpriced anyway. Instead, get something like this automatic Seiko 5 and attach a brown leather strap to it (need to order the proper tool as well). The links to the watch and strap are listed below and the entire thing will run you less than $100. I have one and I can't recommend it enough, since it looks formal enough to wear to a wedding and can still be casual enough for drinks after work.
If you don't like the look, then go for a Citizen Eco-Drive like this one:
On a side note, I looked through the links you posted and the watches range from big to behemoth. The watches I listed should fit a slender wrist perfectly.
I might have or not have worn a few cheap digital watches when I was a child, but this is the first real watch I've ever bought for myself.
Usually when I would head to the train station in the morning I would reach for my phone every two minutes to check the time so I would know when I'd have to break into
a sprint. The same thing happens when there's some distance to be covered when changing trains. It's gotten quite annoying since the S5 is bulkier than the S2
and getting that thing out of your pocket and its cover while you're in a hurry takes forever. So I started lurking /r/watches and finally decided on this model
after a ton of research. I disliked the look of the watch with the strap it ships with, but I found a few similar looking watches that looked really great with a reddish-brown leather strap.
So I ordered the watch, a band I hoped would look good with it, and a tool to swap the old strap with the new one.
For those interested here's exactly what I ordered:
Changing the strap proved to be a little scary but this guide helped me a lot: [link]
St. Louis, MO. not wearing a watch, but i ordered my first one this morning
I'm deciding between the Seiko 5 SNK807 and the SNK793, do you think the 793 would be too dressy for every day use? I suposse i could take off the bracelet and replace it with something else for casual wear. What are your thoughts?
It would be hard not to recommend a Seiko 5 as a cheap daily driver, considering the price, the performance, the quality, and the sheer number of models. There's so many different variants that you're sure to find one that you like. Personally I'm a fan of the SRP271 and this SNK807 (the band isn't the best, but you could always buy one that you like), but this website is a great place to find a model that suits you.
Blue Seiko 5 if that's what you're looking for.
Stainless steel/Divers are going to be more expensive.
I might like this blue 807 myself....
I'm considering buying a Seiko 5. I've never really worn a watch, but this looks great.
I'm pale, darkish hair and green eyes. I don't know if I should pick the black or navy blue watch.
I have tiny wrists (just shy of 6") though. I'm wondering if it will look stupid.
I've been trying to find something that I looks good and feels comfortable on. I typically like something that doesn't feel flimsy or too thin. At the same time I'm trying to avoid something...gaudy.
Here's what I'm thinking so far (and I really would like some input please!)
First - as for the watch face I really like the Seiko 5 - I'm pretty sold on that. I'm still flip flopping between the blue and black face though. I'm thinking blue face with a brown leather strap.
The strap is where I need some help. I'm a big fan of the double buckle layout - but again...I don't want it too gaudy. I'm looking at two - one is a cuff band (which is the one I think may be a bit..too much. And the second is just any normal brown strap - Hirsch and Crown and Buckle are what I've been checking out.
This one is the cuff strap.
And I really like this band from Crown and Buckle.
After my reply to you, I ordered a Seiko 5. Blue face, blue canvas strap. I don't know how much I'll use it, but I think I'll be pleased to have it.
^That's ^why ^I'm ^here, ^I ^don't ^judge ^you. ^PM ^/u/xl0 ^if ^I'm ^causing ^any ^trouble. ^WUT?
A lot of automatic watches have a clear back, such that you can't see through the face but can see the movement working away if you take the watch off. Kind of pointless, but cool. Here's an example. These aren't necessarily expensive - this $60 watch looks cool and has the same sort of see-through back.
I will be honest, OP's watch example doesn't actually look that bad. It's a unique type of movement. I do think it's busy looking and there is unnecessary bling - simplifying it would help a lot. And I mean, there's no real sense of design here. It's not even minimalist, there's basically no design (in terms of aesthetics) at all which is a very different thing.
I was in very much an eye-rolling mood when I saw this gallery of stuff, most of which I think is pretty dumb, which is what inspired my comment. If I had thought about it a little more I would have given a better analysis of the watch and not dismissed it outright.
NOTE: Seiko Men's SNK807 Seiko 5 Automatic Stainless Steel Watch with Blue Canvas Band also available for $63.12 USD
This is completely unrelated to your questions. Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of the submariner variants/ metal band watches. I'd rather do something like this for a daily watch [link]. Those sxx's seem better paired with a suit/blazer/formal situation.
