> I'm thinking of the stories people tell about their dad's who wore their watches from the boardroom to cutting grass. I love Seiko's btw.
In that case, the choice is easy. The Seiko SARB017 "Alpinist" is my favourite watch of all time and is built for the 'gentleman adventurer'. It wears like a sporty dress watch and incredibly versatile due to its depth rating, diashock system and sapphire crystal.
HERE is the amazon link to said beauty.
If you'r ever looking for a green watch that's a bit dressier, you should consider the Seiko Alpinist. I received mine recently, and I am in love with it. It's gorgeous, and I highly recommend it!
$475 on Amazon but you get free shipping / returns / guarantee it’s new....
Hello everyone! Quick question- I am in the market for a new Seiko SARB017 Alpinist and found one on Amazon for $473.88. The used listings I have found on Chrono24 are often more than that. Should I be skeptical of the one on Amazon?
Im wondering how this is a great price, isnt this the same watch on amazon for less?
Seiko Men's Stainless Steel Japanese-Automatic Watch with Leather Calfskin Strap, Brown, 20 (Model: SARB017) [link]
Love it! I've been looking at those through this Amazon link but based on some comments I'm concerned it may not be legit.
FYI for potential buyer, this can be had for $475 + tax with free shipping and free returns right now on Amazon:
If you don’t want a bezel or any extra complications like a chronograph, i suggest looking at Alpinists. They’re new on Amazon right now for $400 (Seiko Men's Stainless Steel Japanese-Automatic Watch with Leather Calfskin Strap, Brown, 20 (Model: SARB017) [link]) and they punch well above their weight - you see them all the time on this sub. Throw a bracelet on it (100-200 dollars and it’s wearable with almost anything.
I recently bought a blue alpinist which is a limited edition version. It was pricier (I paid $850 but it came with a Seiko bracelet) although that is still in your budget. Check them out!
Maybe something like this - [link]
If you're going to plop down £610 smackeroos, I'd suggest going for a decent watch brand and a good quality mechanical, rather than a fashion watch. But again that's your call. Doesn't have to be a Seiko but the Alpinist I linked above has great quality, and has an interesting green-gold dial. 20 bar water resist. It's a great watch all round.
Thanks for the response! I saw Seiya, that's where I saw how nice the Alpinist looks with the metal band!
I found this one on Amazon: [link]
It seems to be legitimate, but I am still cautious. I believe I would have some protection from Amazon if it were a counterfeit, but I am also not sure how I would be able to tell if it was a legit watch or not!
I second this. In that price range with the green face, it's probably the Alpinist. USA Amazon link here for OP.
$347 on Amazon here and I had some once-in-a-blue-moon 15-20% off coupon I was able to apply that took it to a little under $300. Well worth it at that price and I wear it basically every day.
Love the Hamilton idea however if you would something a little different I gotta recommend you look at the seiko alpinist. Same style you are looking for looks great on leather, and has a awesome reputation. Not to mention it is a lot cheaper at around $340.
Movement: 6R15 automatic, hand-winding, hacking

Similar models: SARB013 in cream and SARB015 in black.
Description: Another great Seiko in this price range, and a sub favourite. The green sunburst dial with gold markings is just stunning. The inner rotating compass bezel is more stylish than useful but, like the cathedral hands, just fits with the coherent overall theme - it's not called the Alpinist for nothing. 50 hour power reserve, great lume, 200m WR, sapphire crystal, and all the build quality and accuracy you expect from Seiko in this price range. Looks good on a bracelet but, to my mind, best on a brown leather strap. The latest in a line with a strong history as well - there are some really nice vintage Alpinist models out there.
Still not entirely sure why everyone has such a love affair with the Alpinist, but buying it with a warranty is still (for the moment) an option.
THESE ARE IN STOCK AT AMAZON RIGHT NOW FOR ~$356~
Amazon is selling it for $375 US.
Just wanted to point out they’re selling new on amazon for $356 right now.
Seiko Men's Japanese Automatic Stainless Steel and Leather Casual Watch, Color:Brown (Model: SARB017) [link]
So is this a good deal on amazon?
Safe to buy from Amazon, generally?
SARB017 Green Alpinist also on sale for $364, $395 after tax on Amazon. Lowest price according to CCC is $356 which was in Sept 2018.
Amazon has it
you can get these BNIB on amazon for $475 fyi. https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000KG93BQ
The Citizen NB0040-series might be something for you, its discontinued but you might be able to find one new or you could pick it up pre-owned (example).
The Seiko SARB017 is definitely a fan favorite when it comes to Japanese watches under $500, its more playful than the Presage line. Also very nice is the SZSB013.
Nothing wrong with the Presage line, its definitely dressier than the first two options.
Alpinist all the way, I really like the looks. I don't know where you are from but in the US you can buy it new on Amazon still.
For earth tones I can recommend the Seiko Green Alpinist SARB017 which is available on Amazon for `$450: [link]?
This model was discontinued a few years ago and replaced with a more expensive Prospex Green Alpinist, but units are still selling through retail channels. However as a discontinued model this is one of the few sub-$500 watches that I could potentially see growing in value over time, depending on how much New Old Stock inventory there is to work through.
Another brand to look at in your price range is the Hamilton, perhaps a Khaki Field like this - note this one is hand wind.
There's also Glycine. Variety of designs available here so you'll probably find one you like. Note that Glycine's MSRP is a complete fiction.
On the microbrand end maybe Lorier.
Not trying to burst your bubble or anything friend, but this watch can be had new with Prime on Amazon for $408 right now:
$434 on Amazon...
Just curious, but why did you pay $600? They look like they're <$500 all day on Amazon (Actually $435, sold by Amazon specifically).
These are currently selling on Amazon brand new for $398.99 [link]
This one is shipped from and sold by Amazon for 398$ . I bought my Sarb033 the same way and it came with all the proper paperwork and warranty card. [link]
less than $400 on amazon now:
is buying from amazon sketchy? long island watch has them for an appreciable bit more.
Amazon is selling them for a bit less than usual ATM if you wanna jump (I just yesterday hah): https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000KG93BQ/
Bro it's 669 on Amazon: [link]
Not too knowledgeable on watches, do you mean this one?
You could always go for a Chronograph, although it doesn't have the rotating bezel.
You didn't mention if it had to be a machanical watch? If you're OK with some electronics I'd go for one of Citizens Eco-Drive watches, like the Brycen (https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/mens-brycen/CA0648-09L.html?cgid=mens-ecodrive#prefn1=featureFilter&prefv1=Chronograph&start=8) or a divers with rotating bezel like the BN0150-28E (https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/mens-promaster-diver/BN0150-28E.html?cgid=mens-ecodrive#prefn1=featureFilter&prefv1=Dive+%2F+Scuba&start=5).
Eco-drive is powered by the sun, so no batterychanges ever.
If you prefer a purely mechanical watch I suggest the Alpinist. It doesn't have the rotating bezel like a diver (although I has a compass) you get an incredible amount of watch for your money: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000KG93BQ
Seiko has a similar technology to Eco-Drive called solar.
Seiko Men's ' Japanese Automatic Stainless Steel and Leather Casual Watch, Color:Brown (Model: SARB017) [link]
I recently ordered one from Amazon and it's going for significantly less than retail.
I dunno which one is best. Amazon japan is probably the cheapest, even new and shipped internationally. But I don't know about returns... Ebay might have the best buyer protection but I don't know which seller to trust. Seiya I've heard good things about but is most expensive. There are other sites as well, perhaps you could negotiate.
Someone mentioned the Seiko Alpinist earlier this week and it has the nice simple face that I like while also being mechanical, curved sapphire crystal, 38mm.
Nite Watches also make a variety of tritium-illuminated watches with sapphire crystal. I like their icon styling due to the offset stem, which helps keep the watch from digging in to your hand.
Looking to get the Seiko Alpinist as my first >$60 watch, looks great in pictures and on display in the shops, but I'm worried that the green face would make it harder to coordinate with outfits. I feel like I'm overthinking it though, I can't actually imagine anything it would clash with that isn't ugly on its own anyway. What do you guys think?
Also, in addition to a brown leather strap, what color NATOs would work with it? And is it dressy enough to wear with a suit?
Amazon for one
I personally got mine from here for $500 and it didn't have any custom fees attached. Took two weeks
its about $400 on Amazon
Yeah no big deal.
Here is one that sold a week ago for $340.
This one is the more rare White Dialed version of it currently listed for $325.
Opposed to the $430 on Amazon, Seiya offers it for $396. Though Amazon has one for $398 right now. Long Island has it for $399 also.
The watch isn't as scarce as you might believe.
They usually sell for around the price I stated. Not trying to shit on you or anything, just giving out some other viable options. Because for that price (Minus the Straps) a buyer will be able to buy one new with a warranty attached.
Though, GLWS and hope you find it a new home. And to OP's favor, the straps he has on it are significantly better than the trash that Seiko put on it which really is doo doo.
Almost 4x your budget but I couldn't help but suggest the Seiko Alpinist: [link]
Have you considered Amazon? The price is comparable.
Nomination for The Alpinist for the $201-$500 bracket. Very unique look, and overall has great function.
Maybe something with a compass? Seiko Alpinist?
Well, in case you're concerned with looks as well as durability. These aren't G-Shock tough but solid pieces that should last a long time.... One of Hamilton's Khaki field watches or the Seiko SARB017 Alpinist might appeal to you.
If you like the general look of the field watches, there are other brands that offer more in the durability department in your price range. There are also other 'Alpinist' style watches but there's more variation.
oh that one is really classy! i love how the hands on this one [link] are so "leafy"(?).
The Alpinist looks great, but I feel like Trump has ruined gold for me, so I'm looking for silver/white hands
