Sennheiser makes the best gaming headsets that I've tried. I have the PC 363D and love them. Get the PC 373D (Amazon) for $138 and you'll be all set.
As far as wired to wireless, you're always better off with wired. Wireless are more expensive for lower quality as that's the tradeoff with wireless. For the best quality, wired headphones are the way to go.
I know you said you have a mic but just thought I'd throw this out there... I'd recommend the Sennheiser PC 373D for gaming. I have the HD 598 SE for music and PC 363D for gaming and love them. The PC 373D is usually $250 but it's on sale on Amazon for only $120.
Right now i've come to a conclusion.
Which will be b73etter overall out of these two.
HD 599s + GSX 1000
or
I assume the HD 599s are better right?
i think i might just return everything, the headphones and FiiO and the GSX 1000 and just get the upgraded version of my previous headset.
Which will be this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Surround-Sound-Gaming-Headset-Black-Red/dp/B01IBORI2O/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512128969&sr=1-1&keywords=Sennheiser+363d
Sennheiser PC 373D might work.
Pretty much all black, plus closed back for some passive noise isolation which is great for an office environment. Audio quality on both speakers and mic is great. And has a USB connection. Also comfortable to wear for extended periods.
They're more comparable to the Sennheiser 373D
If you haven't clicked the link to read up about it on massdrop, you can see the reviews there on Amazon.
Can't you increase your budget at all? $40 is pretty low for a headset. You could probably increase your budget to $50-60 and buy a halfway decent used headset. If you can't, I understand, people have bills to pay, I just wanted to ask.
I say this because I always used cheap headphones and headsets until I built my own gaming PC about 2 years ago. I saved up my money for most of my adult life until I had about $10K to spend to build my new PC and all the peripherals. (I'm poor and have a lot of bills so it took a LONG time to save up that kind of money.) I got Sennheiser PC 363D (which at the time were about $350 USD, they don't make them anymore because they were replaced last year by the newer model, PC 373D (Amazon link) which had worse reviews than the older model, PC 363D) and wish I had gotten a decent headset/headphones years ago. It makes such a huge difference when playing games because I can actually clearly hear what direction the enemy/player is coming from and how far away they are because the headset comes with a removable DAC attached and has both a regular mode and surround-sound mode. I use regular mode for games and surround-sound for music and movies.
Sennheiser makes cheaper options too and if you would be willing to buy used, I'd recommend checking them out. Check out these Sennheiser on-ear headphones and let me know what you think. Some are as low as $40-50 brand new or you could get a more expensive pair used for the same price. Check the used section on Amazon or eBay or even the different reddit subs that trade/sell computer stuff. They're often much cheaper on Amazon too, so if you see headphones on the Sennheiser website and they're too expensive, check for the same model on Amazon because they're usually much cheaper.
Check out these models...
Sennheiser 31-II $45/ Amazon link currently unavailable on Amazon
Sennheiser PC 310 $75 / Amazon link $31 (I'd probably get these if you want to stay at your budget)
Logitech is garbage for audio. They're cheap for a reason. Do NOT buy Logitech audio unless you like throwing away money.
Do you absolutely need 5.1? Why not something lower but higher quality? I mostly use my Sennheiser PC 363D headset for gaming but I also have JBL LSR305 speakers which are amazing too. I have one speaker on each side of my desk, pointing slightly towards the middle where I sit, and they're great for gaming. You can even add a center speaker if you want.
If you're gaming, why not use a good headset instead of speakers? It's way easier to hear where players are with headphones versus speakers. I would recommend the Sennheiser PC 373D (Amazon link) as they're amazing for gaming and come with a removable DAC attached. I have the older 363D model and it's by far, the best headphone/headset I've ever used for gaming.
HDMI and TOSLINK are not what you want to use for audio.
Have you checked out /r/audiophile and /r/budgetaudiophile? There's a list on the sub that tells you the best setups for X amount of money. Check our those subs if you haven't already. This sub is pretty dead so those two subs will have more help.
I have the Sennheiser PC 363D and wear glasses when I'm on the computer with no issues at all. The 363D is the old model but they have the Sennheiser PC 373D (on Amazon for $148) which is the updated version. Both the 363D and 373D can be used as a 7.1 surround sound through an attached DAC or can be used as regular headphones. They also both have a volume control knob built into the headphones so you can change your volume without stopping your game. The 363D is the best headset I've ever tried so I would assume the newer, 373D, would be just as good, if not better. If you look at the reviews on Amazon, many of the bad reviews were written by people who didn't realize they needed to install software for the attached DAC to work.
I was so excited when I bought them, but ultimately thought the Arctis6 headset was uncomfortable too.
A friend of mine had a pair of Sennheiser's and I instantly bought a pair for myself. If you could fall in love with headsets, this is my match made in heaven haha.
I bought them on sale - look around. Pretty sure they were 160 or so when I got them.
Sennheiser PC 373D is the model I have - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IBORI2O/
For gaming, go with Sennheiser PC 373D (Amazon link for $159). I have both the Sennheiser PC 363D for gaming and watching TV/movies and the 598 SE for music. The 598 SE are great for music but for gaming the PC 363D are way better. PC 363D are AMAZING for gaming and the 373D are the newer model so I would assume they would be even better.
I had tried out my friend's M50Xs before I bought my Sennheiser headphones and was happy I decided to purchase Sennheiser. The sound quality was better with both of my Sennheiser headphones versus M50X.
Oh and if you look at the reviews for the 373D, they would have had better scores if people had read their manuals and realized they needed to install the software before using the 373D. The 363D that I have didn't require any software so many people claimed to have bad sound or problems with the 373D until they installed the software and realized that was their problem. Many people later edited their bad reviews and corrected them when they realized the problem but not all which is why the 373D has lower scores than the older 363D.
No idea what that website is all about but it seems to be refering to Amazon... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Surround-Sound-Gaming-Headset/dp/B01IBORI2O was also £76 a week ago.
They don't make the PC 363D anymore, they have the newer PC 373D which I'd definitely check out if I were you. You can get them for $96 euro on Amazon or on sale for $135 euro (normally $249.99) from Sennheiser. You should also check out the noise-canceling GSP 600 which is on sale on Amazon for $178 (normally $249.99) and the open-back GSP 500 which is currently $135 euros from Sennheiser or $144 on sale on Amazon (normally $225.) Any of those are good deals. You can see all their gaming headsets here.
If you're gaming, check out Sennheiser PC 373D. I have both the HD 598 SE for music and the PC 363D for gaming and love them. The PC 373D is normally $250 (recently dropped in price to $160) but it's currently only $118 on Amazon.
You can also check out /r/audiophile and /r/budgetaudiophile.
Get the Sennheiser PC 373D. Currently on Amazon for $138, normally $250. Rated best headset of 2018. I have the older model, PC 363D, and it's the best headset I've tried.
If you want the best of both worlds get the Sennheiser PC series headset. It has on ear volume control and lift to mute mic, plus there are even more comfortable than the Astros. **Adding info If you have a PS4 get the wired silver PlayStation headset. It comes with a USB adapter that's designed for the PS4 and you can use your Sennheiser headset with surround and mix the audio. That's what I use. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F401223808578
Both suck.
Are you outputting to speakers or a headset or what?
You want a DAC instead. I made the mistake of buying Asus Strix Raid DLX, Essence STX II, and Creative Soundblaster ZxR sound cards until I finally listened to people and bought a Schiit DAC instead to hook up to my JBL LSR305 speakers. I use Sennheiser PC 363D headset for gaming and it has a removable USB DAC attached. If you want a good gaming headset, go with the Sennheiser PC 373D (Amazon link). Way better audio.
Check out /r/budgetaudiophile and /r/audiophile.
You're not going to want a sound card, you want better headphones. If you already had good headphones and wanted better audio quality, I'd recommend a DAC, not a sound card. If you got a DAC without upgrading your headphones, you wouldn't hear a difference anyway. Sound cards < DAC. What is your budget? I'd highly recommend a Sennheiser headset, like the PC 373D (which is currently on sale for $130, normally $249.99). The PC 373D comes with an attached/removable DAC. I have the older model, PC 363D, and they're amazing.
Right now, my computer is in the living room so my fiancée would kill me if she heard a bunch of gunshots and stuff coming from my headphones. I think closed might be the better option.
You don't like the Sennheiser PC 373D? Those are on sale for $199
I can also do the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x with a Mic and the Omni
I have a couple of suggestions for you based on the Sennheiser line with different categories for you to pick from.
First off, if you would want a gaming headset with a great sound capability and a powerful boom mic, I would recommend the PC 373D, Sennheiser's latest product in their gaming line. Albeit much more expensive than other gaming headset in the market, that is to be noted.
Secondly, if you would want an audiophile grade headset yet not overly over the top expensive, go with the HD 598 CS. This is the closed back version of the original 598 with improve head paddings and overall build quality, great for long gaming sessions.
Lastly, if you prefer the full Sennheiser experience, the HD 600/650 is your pick. Although still in the $300-$400 price range it is worth it if you don't want to pay $500+ for better ones yet still get the similar good sound quality.

Check out Sennheiser PC 373D. They're only about $150 USD on Amazon. They would have perfect reviews on Amazon if people bothered to read the manual as the lower score reviews mostly say the DAC didn't work or something along those lines and many of them later edited the review to say it was their own fault for not installing the software for the headset as the older model the 363D didn't need any software to work correctly. I have the 363D and they're amazing. The mic flips up to the side if you don't want to use it and I personally never use it. They come with a DAC attached that's removable. I use the 3D surround sound for watching movies/TV and turn it off while gaming so I can hear exactly what direction things are happening in the game. Best headset I've ever had for gaming and watching movies/TV. I use Sennheiser HD 598 SE for music but music sounds great on the PC 363D too. If you're gaming or watching movies, go with the PC 373 over any HD series which are more for music.
