top def isnt... you can tell because they have a packaged solution file for you to deploy (cant do that in o365).
if you are unable to do that you can get pretty far using the first half of that option (manaaged navigation) then just bumping the nav limit in the OOTB master page and do alot of CSS/JS hackery.
if you want a more comprehensive resource to that era i would suggest https://www.amazon.com/SharePoint-2013-Branding-Interface-Design/dp/1118495675/
I'm glad you mentioned Randy Drisgill - I've been reading up on some of his stuff on his site and saw his book referenced with great praise above.
Is that book worth getting? Why or why not?
I haven't done much research into Design Manager yet - that is something I'll be bringing up.
heh, what all did you have in mind?
also, good time to caution against not and feel out how soon they are doing 2019 and feel you are aptly suited to point out how anything you do will be dead and poopy in comparison
that being said, not sure if bindtuning still sells em but they used to make nice lil branding/intranet packages

> so then to apply the css styles I want, I have to make the classes/ids and find the part of the master page that controls that part I want to edit and then add that class/ID to it? that's basically all there is to it right?
Yep. Brower dev tools inspector is your friend. Also these:

>the thing I don't like about oslo is basically they are putting the content from the left nav on the top bar which isn't what I want
YES!! I have the same beef. alas...sigh. Just make a layout that hides the left nav if you dont want it and add the css there if you can't get it to load with alt pub site css (pretty sure nothing here changed).
>[nav questions]
Yes. But go to Site Settings --> Navigation and look at the terms/structure there.
Current Nav = Quick Launch = Left Nav
Global Nav = Top Nav = In seattle, gone from Oslo, confusingly replaced by imposter with little warning
