>If you fail to live up to your own standard, but are still satisfied with your work and your results, then maybe your standard isn’t that reliable?
Quite the opposite. My first novel had rough pacing. It has a 4.3 average, which is awful on Amazon. It was written from 2010 - 2014, and what it taught me is that you have to trim the fat. It was amateurish.
My breakout novel came in 2016, and ratcheting things up a notch. it taught my valuable lessons about reader expectations.
These are the reviews for my most recent series. The books are between 800 - 1000 pages, and not once will you find a complaint about pacing, across hundreds of reviews.
Why? Because I learned my lesson. I made lots of mistakes along the way. Trust me when I say writing a compelling novel is a lot more challenging than running a campaign. You don't have any players helping. It's all you.
I've sold millions of books now, and been doing this full time for a lot of years. I love that you're still trying to dunk on me about giving up on shows too soon.
One of my books is literally called Write to Market, and it's sold many, many, thousands of copies. I've launched a lot of author careers.
What kind of authority are you speaking with, exactly?
How about we offer up some campaign notes so I can give them a once over and offer you the same kind of feedback you've offered me?
First off, a massive thank you to this sub. So many people have come out of the woodwork to help me launch, without gaining anything. The audiobook went live this morning via podium, and sounds amazing =D
About the book...
TL;DR Shattered Gods is a universe where mages gain power from the bodies of dead gods. Our main character is the reincarnation of a demon god.

Everyone is a Monster to Someone
My name is Xal and I live in the dims, a walled prison where my people are kept by our cruel masters, until we are needed to fight once more. One member of every family must answer The Call, for our blood bears the magic of a demonic god, and all the terrible power that brings.
We march to war against the Fomori, an unstoppable army of giants, and their behemoths. If we do not, then our families are put to death. The Hasrans use us as cannon fodder, and worse. They used up my father, and he never came home. Die resisting. Die fighting. My choice isn’t if it happens, but rather how I sell my life.
If by some miracle I survive I will be granted entrance to the Imperial Academy, where every noble house will vie to architect my end. They cannot allow the void-blooded to live. They cannot allow us to thrive, or to gain more magic from the bodies of other dead gods. They cannot allow us to win. They fear the rise of another dreadlord. And they are right to fear. I will pull down an empire, and that is just the beginning.
(Note: I am not Chris Fox. I was however pretty excited to see this project come to life, and I don’t think he knows about this subreddit. It just went live so I haven’t finished the book, but I really like the setting from the Table Top game the author made for it, and I think you guys will like the story.)
Author's Blurb:
Fated to destroy the world. Determined to save it.

Shattered Gods is based on the Magitech Chronicles pen & paper RPG, and takes place in the same universe. If you're a gamer, litRPG fan, or just want to see the stats for the characters in the book come join us! Links in the book or check us out at magitechchronicles.com

Why is it progression fantasy?
The entire thing is built on the back of an existing Table Top RPG, with most of its mechanics intact. Within the first fifty pages the MC drinks the blood of the god Xalegos and gains magic to make the sigils he can draw stronger.
The world is covered in the bodies of dead gods, and the humans living there have used those bodies to build Catalysts, giant magitech buildings that can bestow magic onto anyone who enters them, but only a select few are allowed to enter them.

>As a fellow 46 year old I am sure you have encountered people who refuse to acknowledge space travel as a necessary step in our evolution as a species.
Every new technology will be resisted. We will never agree on anything. But as long as some people are pushing this forward, and they most definitely are, then space exploration is going to happen no matter what.
China just finished fully mapping Mars, and we'll have a moon base by 2035.

>I lack the resources to move them out of the way, or the will to focus on fixing that.
It sounds like your goals are political in nature. I'm assuming we're talking about Roe V Wade? If you want to codify that right, then we need either a constitutional amendment, or at least a law passed by congress.
These goals could be achieved, if this was your focus. There are already existing organizations you could join to make this reality, again if this is your focus.
I know people on the left, and the right who support this. But we need to find common ground.

>It's been a theme my whole life, thinking that we're further along than we are, only to find out that we're much further behind, at least on a western civilization level, than I had thought.
Love that you are the same age. Why are you not close enough to go out for a drink / coffee? I disagree so much about how far we've come.
In high school gay was a pejorative. I've watched society do a 180, and now LGBT+ are accepted by everyone I know on the right and left. Non-issue for the people who once would have been adamantly opposed to gay marriage.
In junior high school I was badly bullied, and picked on, because I played D&D and read fantasy novels. I had the shit kicked out of me all the time. Pranks. You name it. That stuff does not happen any more in the United States. Bullying is not cool.
We've progressed on so many issues. I can't even locate a real racist any more. And I definitely knew a few back in high school. We are a far more tolerant nation. We had a 2 term black president, which couldn't have happened in the 80s when we were kids.
At the same time-- I see what you're saying about Roe V. Wade. The right didn't die out, nor should they. They're Americans too, even if we don't agree on everything. The poor of all walks of life have more in common than the rich of any particular party.

>Do you publish your books?
Yes, I meant what I said about my legacy. I have 40 novels in print. The latest series is epic fantasy, big doorstopper books. I have 3 out and a 4th nearly finished, in a 10 book series.
It's called Shattered Gods. Think Harry Potter if he were dropped into the middle of the Hunger Games. Dead gods power mages. I've already done the SF version of the setting.
The theme is that the world is screwed, and the young are in a tough spot. A hero has to rise, to lead the people. In this series I am passing every lesson that I can on to kids.
Tolerance, but also the will to stand up for themselves. Critical thinking. The dangers of fascism, and communism, and unchecked capitalism. About just how hard these things are to get right, and why.
By the end they will have witnessed a boy grow into a god, and if I've done my job right they will never know I was preaching optimism and faith the entire time. =)
It's not much. I also have a YouTube channel with a bunch of free courses that will teach someone how to write, edit, publish, and market their writing. It's launched careers, and helped some people live their dream.
I can't stop climate change. But I can make the world a slightly better place!
He literally wrote on the blurb the book was based on a roleplaying game.

If you need more convincing he writes here that it began as a role playing system.
