For Thai history, "Siam Mapped" by Thongchai Winichakul is my recommendation - just skip its first and last chapter if it appears to be too dry for you. For a more contemporary one though Chris Baker's "History of Thailand" will probably tell the story better.
If you are into history and geopolitics, here is a good book: https://www.amazon.com/Siam-Mapped-History-Geo-Body-Nation/dp/0824819748 written by a Thai professor at UW Madison. The material is not affected by the royalist-nationalist narrative, which is mainstream in the country, and it is also academically rigorous.
