This used to happen to me, and I figured out that it was actually my pillow that was giving me problems. My neck is overly sensitive to the angle that I sleep at, so I was waking up literally every day with headaches that only got worse throughout the day. Turns out they were tension headaches from tight neck muscles. I changed to a special side sleeper pillow (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005HRYQS8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and it changed my life! I never sleep without it now! Maybe this will help you too.
You are ME! I came to this sub today to look for the same answer. I cannot stand the sound of a settling pillow. It distracts me so much! And I can't sleep on my back (night terrors) or my stomach (body not made that way).
I've tried pillows with ear holes cut out. This one was my favorite (took a while to compress it to a comfortable height for me). I have this one now. It's too soft, very oddly shaped, and way too high for me (I'm 5'1"). What I do like about it is the memory foam. The foam doesn't move much and so I don't hear that constant crinkle, crinkle that drives me *NUTS*!
I've tried just a regular travel pillow but they're also really high.
I wish I could find a low loft <4" memory foam pillow but they seem to be as elusive as unicorns.
I hope it helps to know that you're not alone. You're the first person I've "met" who also has this issue.
I use this. Never been hot.
I use this one. No problems so far.
If you are having arm or hip pain in bed, get a special pillow that relieves pressure.
