Yes, you will likely burn through thinner quickly. Buying it a couple ounces at a time is very uneconomical given the pace that you use it if you are painting with enamels. You can buy 32 oz cans at a hardware store for a few bucks -- look for "Mineral Spirits" or "White Spirits" (NOT "Paint thinner").

I use a brush cleaning jar from a local art store to store my thinner for brushes. Mine has a pad on the bottom for cleaning, but ones like this with a coil are popular:

I filled mine about halfway with thinner nearly a decade ago and not a noticeable drop has evaporated away. I use a smaller cup (one you'd use for cough syrups and the like, you can buy these by the hundred on Amazon for a few bucks) for quick cleaning in the middle of the job, but whip out the big cleaning jar at the end to get them completely cleaned.

If keeping your brushes clean is a problem, in my experience acrylics won't solve that problem for you. They dry faster and they don't just dissolve away like enamels do, making keeping the brushes totally clean, especially if you get the paint into the ferrule (the metal bit that clamps the bristles to the handle).

I mainly used it on larger brushes, not so much any more, since I airbrush large areas and then start with smaller brushes for handpainting.
