Try Barkeepers Friend soft scrub. pick small spot and rub it for 30 seconds, rinse, and see how much it removed. If it was successful do the rest. If these are aluminum then the dishwashing detergent has pitted the surface. No aluminum in the dishwasher. You can also try Simichrome polish if that is the case. apply it with a twisting motion in the direction of the brushed pattern.
So, there’s this stuff. It probably won’t take the rust completely off, but it will probably make it look better. Just be careful, that shit is rather toxic.
Car wax works well, but if you really want the solder lines to shine after you apply patina, apply simichrome (silver polish) to the lines and then buff to a really nice shine. Make sure to give your patina time to dry for about an hour or two.
for the back, personally I use something called Simichrome polish for the front I would use the highest grit sandpaper you can get, around 3000 minimum, and then some more of the Simichrome, hope this helps.
I had the same thing on my stainless cladding, from a steel scrubby. Took some Simichrome Polish and a dry rag and went at it. Takes some time, cover your edge with a heavy tape or something like that, but they came out for me
They one on the left is raw aluminum, and the two stacked up are nickel. I did a titanium that just arrived last week with the same polish as well, but it didn't seem to do much for that material, but it totally blasts out nickel and aluminum. :)
I use Semichrome polish
This is amazing stuff for polishing. I have used it myself. It is very good stuff.
What are you going to do with a beautiful bike that is the wrong size for you ?
I had a vintage kit for a minute (and in much better shape) and I was going to restore it and then quickly decided that's just too much work to be worth the effort and sold it.
I would cleanup all the rods, there's a way to do it with coke or vinegar and dish soap or you can use Simichrome or Flitz. You want something non-abrasive.
Th dyna-sonic I would do my best to cleanup, I love mine, you can buy replacement parts for it but that will get pricey, if the rail is really jacked up you can just take it off and use normal snares.
By far the best aluminum polish: Simichrome 390050 All Metal... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUQ4E?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
If the arm is supposed to be shiny, the best polish is Simichrome. If it's brushed finish, I would try some steel wool.
This is what you want. It polishes EVERYTHING.
Try Simichrome. I found that it works great on flat areas on silver. Use a soft cloth and the compound.

A couple things that I've read here that I want to clear up. The fresnal ridges are not on the side of the lens that you look through, they are on the other side so you're not sanding that down you're sanding down a side that is supposed to be smooth. If the scratches on your lens are not visible in the hmd then obviously you don't *need to do anything, unless you're like me and just can't stand scratches.
Proceed with caution but a pro tip - it doesn't matter. You'll be happier after the scratches are gone. Also get yourself a small thumb sized led flashlight. You can hold it in near the lenses to better see the scratches. Enjoy the clarity...
I've been using Simichrome since I was a kid back i n the 60's. Works great on just about any metal surface. Manufacturers site.
Simichrome is the best stuff I've found for getting rid of scratches. It's kinda spendy, but a tube will probably last a lifetime.
This stuff works well with just a rag. https://www.amazon.com/Simichrome-390050-Metal-Polish-Tube/dp/B0002YUQ4E
You can also use Brass Black to force a quick patina that will wear easily. Saw it on a flashlight and it looked neat. https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/irypxz/ancient_technology/
