> I don't think I've ever seen a show that's so real about love and loss and pain and family and relationships and all the things that make up being a person.
And that's what makes the show so special. The characters feel real, like actual people. They never react or act in ways that are only convenient to the plot. Hell, the plot itself is not structured like most shows, either.
Like (major spoilers here!) Nate breaking up with Brenda at the very end. In every other show that would basically be the start of a whole new subplot, and there'd be no way anything happens to the characters until that subplot was resolved in one way or another. Here, though, the entire thing became moot just like that, because sometimes life is like that.
And the writers knew how real the characters were, too. There is barely ever any kind of exposition, neither for the story nor for the character's emotions. And there's no overacting, either. No extreme sad-face to show the viewers that a character is sad. Sometimes it's just a tiny, fleeting look that you could easily miss that completely changes a scene's meaning.
And all this just contributes to the ending working so perfectly as it did. Killing off characters isn't a bold choice, everyone can do that. What matters is that you care about the characters first. And did that show ever make you care about its characters.
God this show is wonderful.
Also, while I'm at it: If you are a huge fan and want more, I can only recommend the Six Feet Under companion book. It's a genuinely great addition to the show, containing all kinds of (often hand-)written pieces that were mentioned in the show (Claire's school assignments, various excerpts from various books by/about Brenda, love letters between Nathaniel and Ruth, Diary entries, etc.) that were specifically written for this book and really make the characters feel that much more real.
Charlotte Light & Dark was a fictional book about Brenda as a child, so you won't find it in the real world... that being said, there's an INCREDIBLE book by the team behind the show that's basically a collection of photos, letters, other moments and documents of the Fishers and other characters... there's even an excerpt from Charlotte in it. You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0743480651/ref=cm\_sw\_em\_r\_mt\_dp\_BAATDNRJVK3JQFZWVR0C
I have the same problem - I always wish I had a print of some sort for my walls. The only SFU things I have aside from the box set are this book and then the Rittenhouse trading cards.
And by the way, I highly recommend getting a copy of that book if you don't have it. It's great.
