I bought a queen sized memory foam mattress for $350 on Amazon a few years ago. Been amazing so far. Has 10 year full warranty.
Edit: It's this one. Sleep Innovations Shiloh 12-inch Memory Foam Mattress, Queen [link]
Got a 12-inch memory foam mattress from Amazon 8 years ago. It was really nice! I didn't have to strap something to the top of my little shitbox Aveo and risk sailing away like a kite. UPS delivered it to my back awning. I grab the box and.... holy fuck that's heavy! 90 pounds of memory foam. After schlepping it into my house, i took it out of the box. The most satisfying thing is to set it up as best you can on your platform, then start to take the plastic off. It swells a little bit as the air rushes in (it's vacuum packed). Then over the next 12-24 hours, it reaches peak size.
Very comfy. Slept a little hot, but apparently not as much as other full memory foam mattresses. Enjoyed it until I moved in with my girl and didn't need to bring it.
after reading through this thread i tested it out a little, it is "softer" in the middle, but i really don't notice it at all while sleeping. i sleep amazing almost every night. YMMV
Ooooohh I have a recommendation! I love this one I've literally bought it twice. The package is really heavy though so make sure it's delivered into your apt. I had to lug it like twenty feet and it was difficult.
Not the same one, but I bought this 6 years ago:
Feels the same (wonderful) now as it did then. Half the price of anything memory-foam in a mattress store. 1/5 to 1/10 the price of tempur-pedic.
Get the memory foam from Costco or buy it from Amazon if you want it delivered for free:
It's the same mattress but different name at Costco for a bit less at Amazon. It goes on sale sometimes too -- you just missed it going down to $250 from $450. But it's worth it at $450. Or CamelCamelCamel.com it if you can wait.
No problem. This is the one I bought with the matching mattress topper and I love it. I sleep on it myself :)
I had surgery on a herniated disk. I highly recommend the 12" Sleep Innovations foam mattress on Amazon. I have been sleeping on one since the surgery over 4 years ago. The price is right around what your looking for. In hot weather, you may need a thin topper to stay cool (not expensive). I've slept on the same brand and model in the Midwest and on the west coast so it works well in any climate.

Sure, it's not a big name but I honestly think those are more about the marketing than the product. I only buy this mattress now. Bought two in the Midwest (one for guest room). Moved out to west coast and bought two again (one for guest room). I sleep so well on this mattress. In cold weather, remove any topper and the foam keeps you nice and warm at night. Not sweaty warm though -- just right.
I highly recommend this mattress that is actually sold by Amazon:

I had back surgery. This mattress is awesome. Only thing it needs is a thin topper for hot weather. I've bought 4 of them so far and each one has been as expected (I relocated is only reason -- the old ones are at my parents and brothers and still going strong after 4+ years).
You can save on running shoes by buying last year's model -- the colors change and go out of fashion after a year somehow. But I think the key is going to someone who can fit you and then buying similar shoes. Only worth it if you put the effort in to be 100% sure you're getting the correct fit. Otherwise, shoes are cheap compared to medical care.
I've always been worried Sultan would fall apart. I love this mattress:
Sleep Innovations 12-Inch Memory Foam
I love it so much I've bought two queens and a king so far. They don't really need the extra flexibility of the Laxeby/Lonset but it doesn't seem to hurt either.
Buy off of Amazon, with prime it's there in 2 days. This thing is super comfortable, but does require about 2 days to Air Out and puff up when it arrives.
Looks like it has gone up $50 since I bought one.
Just get a SleepInnovations mattress from Amazon (seriously -- super comfortable and less than half the price you'd pay anywhere else). Prime delivers to your house free in two days. Old mattress you can call in a Bulky Item pickup.
I highly recommend this mattress:

Qualifications: have had herniated disk surgery and purchased multiple of this mattress. I bought the first one as a guest bed -- my primary was a more expensive latex mattress from Ikea. But I quickly swapped them and used this one from Amazon as my primary. I've since purchased more and have had family members purchase them.
In theory, Costco has a very similar mattress that is basically the same thing for a little bit more. So if you don't want to deal with Amazon, it's an option.
My preference is to use that mattress on top of Ikea slates like these:
Lonset slatted bed base
My next project is to build my own bed frame that uses these slats as I'm not that crazy about the Ikea bed frames.
My friend bought this. I fell in love the first time I tried it out and had to buy one for myself. I've had mine for 16 months and now my mother wants to get one. [link]
It is warm. I like my bed warm though. If you get hot really easily then meh.
You will have to check on a return policy but I do believe there is one if you hate it.
It may be hard but it softens up as your body generates heat. Winter you may notice it more hard. Doesn't bother me.
You can read reviews and sort them by new. I love it. I no longer wake up in back pain. Also got a nice memory foam pillow and my neck feels great every morning now too. [link]
Your dad sounds like my idiot friend, he spent 5k as well, but got a tempur, a bedroom set and a tv stand
check this amazing bed out [link] under 500 for a queen
Haha that's crazy, I feel sorry for you!
The Sleep Innovations 12" Shiloh mattress is a fantastic mattress for side sleepers, see here: [link]
I believe it was this one: [link]
So you're telling me I can get this bed locally for 10℅ cheaper? [link]
I got this memory foam one off Amazon.com a few years ago. Been totally happy with it.
Also went with this frame, and it's a bit smaller than the mattress, oddly, but I was able to separate it out a few inches and it was fine. It's VERY sturdy in case you're into, er, gymnastics in bed. ;)
Queen memory foam (made in USA) + metal frame delivered to your door for reasonable price. I wasn't sure about switching to memory foam, but been pleased and having more storage space under frame is nice.
Bonus DIY headboard project to go with: [link]
Cool, thanks! I'm looking to buy a very good quality mattress. I've heard great things about memory foam, and I've heard that TempurPedic is great but there are other options that are cheaper and just as good. I have my eye on this one, what do you think?
(That link is to the queen size, but I'm going to spring for the king size if it'll fit well. I still have to get into the apartment once it's cleared out to take measurements.)
I'll also be needing a box spring/frame for it. Any advice on a good place to shop for those?
Free shipping if you're an Amazon Prime member. For reference, I bought a memory foam mattress topper for myself via Amazon, and the prices and service were first rate. Absolutely zero complaints. It was a MUCH nicer experience than buying from a store.
