A steady hand can be crucial. I use a painting handle with a support bar that can rest my other hand against, and sometimes the brush itself.

If, perhaps, you have a ton of crevices/recesses that you want black, there is the option of priming in black and then dry brushing over the large parts in a different color, leaving behind black in the recesses that you do not later have to fill in. If find having a black layer and lightly dry brushing a silver on top is a great strategy for, say, chainmail!
You can also use dark washes after you're done painting the main part, which help shadow and unify your miniature, with the bonus of filling in crevices with dark wash.

Blending:

Uh, this is where youtube really comes in handy. There are several ways to blend, and watching several videos and practicing is the best way to figure them all out ...
Wet blending - basically, use one color on one end of your object, quickly use another color the other end, and then use your blush to try to blend them in the middle while the paint is still wet. You can use an in-between color in the middle as well.
Glazing - thin down your paints so they're more watery and barely leave any color on the miniature, then paint a section with one super thin layer and let it dry completely. Then paint a slightly smaller part of the same section. Let dry. Then another smaller section. Soon, the layers will build up to a more solid color towards the side you're hitting with the brush most often, with the original color on the side you touched the least. Time-consuming but can be very rewarding.
But, yeah ... watch videos. Then watch more.
Practice, practice, practice. Blending is the hardest but most key part to great painting, imho.
