I recommend So You Want to Be a Rock and Roll Star by Jacob Slichter. Jacob is the drummer for Semisonic. It tells the story of forming Semisonic in the mid 90s and struggling to find success. I've read a handful of books written by or about rock stars, and this one is my favorite.

So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star is a fantastic read. It’s written by Semisonic’s drummer, essentially an autobiography of the band’s experience dealing with the music industry. It’s entertaining, but you’ll learn a lot.
for anyone who wants a good look into musician/record company life i would suggest reading this book, written by Jacob Slichter the drummer of Semisonic [remember that song Closing Time?] - http://www.amazon.com/Wanna-Rock-Roll-Star-Machine-Gunned/dp/0767914716/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1331036965&sr=1-1
