I'm not sure if you're interested in embedded systems, but this book has a great section on taking the non-traditional route to an embedded systems career: So, You Wanna Be An Embedded Engineer.
The author never had a degree and learned everything through self-study. He gives a lot of interesting insight into the route he took and how he was successful at it.
