Treatment: Hannah Somatics - Lesson 7 - Improving Breathing
Book Chapter: Hannah Somatics - Lesson 7
I’ve taken some Somatic classes since spring earlier this year and I must say it’s a good way to connect with the body, calming down the stress system, and I’ve tried a lot of different treatments, programs during the years. It’s a mind-body practice.
Thomas Hannah has developed this technique from Feldenkrais practice. Here is his book
Martha Peterson is also very well known in this area and has released several books and DVD, there’s a lot on YouTube to watch as well.

Recently I read Somatics, which helped me put all my movement arts (Taiji, Chi Gong, Yoga, Dance)in context. To boil it all down, the body is able to move like Jackie Chan. It's an amazing thing, our muscular/skeletal system. But learning those movements requires neural awareness to tense and release muscles and fascia. When we stiffen up, it's because we are unable to release muscle tension, for whatever reason. But such things can be learned by awareness of the true movement and linkage of our internal muscular system. Since our muscles expand and contract via electrical signals, and since electricity always flows via the path of least resistance, "chi" can be understood as the path of neural electricity that connects and coordinates our muscles. In a very literal sense, it is energy. It works best when we know how to relax our muscles to a low tone, which is why we emphasize relaxation in Internal Martial Arts.
