I have the same problem as your fiancée and when I used my phone alarm, it made my roommate go nuts. I use a deaf alarm now and it has improved the situation a lot!
A deaf alarm is basically an alarm clock has a vibrating pod connected to it. You put the pod under your pillow or mattress (depending on how strong you want to feel the vibration under your head). It makes some noise but negligible compared to a normal alarm and it will wake you up in an instant.
The one I use is called Sonic Boom. They have different varieties in case you find the look tacky. You can set the clock such that it only uses the vibrating pod and doesn’t make any alarm sounds.
Your problem seems to be common and has a pretty good technical solution that involves little compromise from both parties. You should def check out the deaf alarm clock. It’s only called that because deaf people can’t use noise/sounds to wake them up.

This is a bed shaker, it slides under your mattress and it will wake you up. It also has a really loud alarm and flashing lights, but I've always just used the shaker.

Some other Deaf use lights, some use sound if they can hear certain pitches well enough to wake up.

I have a fairly significant hearing loss and depend on hearing aids. Regular alarm clocks haven't worked for me for decades. You slip the hockey puck (The Rumbler) under your side of the mattress and the powerful vibrations really resonate through the mattress. Wakes me up easily. I leave the beep beep on silent and only use the rumbler.

I too had this app...until in my half asleep state I somehow figured out how to turn it off without solving the puzzles. I have no idea how, I cant do it it awake, but apparently half asleep I'm a fricking genius ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I now rely on a combination of 5 normal alarms on my phone which I put across the room so I have to physically get out of bed, and this bad boy, the Sonic Bomb alarm clock, which not only reaches 90 decibels, it has a plate you put under your mattress / pillow that vibrates when the alarm goes off.
Of course it helps that I live alone so no one but me suffers....
Try your landlord first before directly contacting your neighbor. A tenant is causing a disruption to another tenant. I'm not a parent and don't know if or how your neighbors can control a young child at that hour, so do so at your own risk. It may not get you the results you're hoping for and/or piss off your neighbors. I think they're jerks, btw.
Have you looked into "earthquake" alarms? I haven't used this brand, but this is one that you can find on Amazon. My brother had something similar when he moved into my house. It was effective for him (and everyone else in the house). I would think that you'd still be able to wake up if you used something like this while wearing ear plugs.
If you exhaust those options and you can't get a decent night's rest, that's when you would think seriously about relocating.
ETA judgment: NTA - you would not be the asshole for contacting someone about the issue. Just tread lightly because you're completely unaware of the local laws and do not speak their language.

That alarm clock, plus if you have any smart lights, I have mine set to very slowly start getting brighter about 20 minutes before my alarm goes off. Eventually they'll be at 100% and I can't sleep under bright light. To make this work, when I was on day shift, I made sure my room was completely dark during the day. I mean 0% light getting in at all.
6 years on night shift, and that fixed me. I wake up on the first try now, no more snoozing and it conditioned me to wake up within seconds of hearing my alarm. Plus I'm in the military, the fear of being late enough times, I'd lose my job, insurance, retirement and my livelihood...those are also motivations for me lol.
That alarm clock is supposed to vibrate as well, maybe you need a physical reaction.

I had one of these. I liked it, especially the bed shaker. However the alarm on it sometimes left my ears ringing. My point is the vibrating bed was nice when I didn’t want the alarm. Unfortunately I still sleep through alarms and this is the only solution I’ve found.
I have a bed-shaker alarm which was initially designed for deaf or hearing-impaired people. It can be turned up to something like 110 dB, or it can be silenced and you can just use the shaker part under the mattress. It also has flashing lights. Anyway, it’s the Sonic Alert

You might be able to find Sonic Alert brand alarm clocks. In the UK and EU they're sold under the geemarc brand, so searching for that might help. I'm in the USA so I'm not sure which retailers might have them. Here they're pretty easy to get on Amazon.

THIS saved my life. it’s comically loud. it also has a shaker that you place under your pillow. I have had sleep troubles and this is the best I could find. Need an alarm that will absolutely get you out of bed every morning? Get this one. I’m hard of hearing in one ear. If I sleep on the wrong ear, it’s easy to not hear the alarm in the morning. Never had that problem after getting this alarm.

Might I recommend the ‘Sonic Bomb’ alarm clock. It comes with a bed shaker, flashes red LED’s, and is definitely one of the loudest alarms I have come across. I got this when I was working 2 jobs and going to school. Easily available on amazon for about $40.
You can leave your phone on vibrate on your bed or under your pillow. There's also alarm clocks which specifically vibrate to wake you up if you prefer not using your phone or need something with a stronger motor.

I bought it like 10 years ago and it works like a charm. It is the loudest, most obnoxious alarm clock in recorded history. It pierces dreams and rips sleep to shreds, flashes bright lights, and has a vibrating disk that goes under the mattress that jolts you awake. Pretty much the opposite of the gentle wake they seem to be going for, but when the goal is awake, there is no substitute. Good luck!

I use this alarm, it works wonders for me! There is zero sleeping through an alarm with this thing, which was a problem for me in the past. There are a few others like it on the market (with bed shakers) but this one has been working perfectly for years so it's the only one I know.
It has a beep (tone & volume can be adjusted), flashing lights (very bright), and the bed shaker - the best part, imo. I have mine tucked between my box spring & mattress, and the whole bed shakes! Download the app "Alarmy". It's an alarm clock straight from the depths of hell. Like, it won't turn off until you do math problems, memorization puzzles, shake the phone, or some other stuff you can choose from. Next, start going to bed a touch earlier. Finally, set the alarm tone for Alarmy to be something really loud but also kinda upbeat. It sounds awful, and it is, but I ensure you that this will kick you into gear.
If somehow this doesn't work, buy one of these and set it up across the room from your bed. If you choose this option, good luck and apologize to your neighbors now.

This alarm has a shaker that you put under your mattress (or under your pillow if you want to be shaken super hard). I'd recommend putting it far away enough from your bed that you have to stand up to turn it off.

get an alarm clock like this: I am a super heavy sleeper and this thing is loud enough to wake me up, however it also wakes up roommates but fortunately it has a vibrating thing that is silent but basically shakes you awake. Normally you're supposed to put the vibrating thing under the mattress but I put it under my pillow sometimes. Try it out and see if it works for you

As someone with waking issues, your typical smartphone isn't gonna do shit. This literally has an attachment you put under your bed or pillow that shakes when it goes off. It's also loud enough to qualify as a possible nuclear strike.
If this doesn't get you up, you might have a medical issue. But it might help!

It sets up like a normal alarm clock and then the small hockey puck that is attached by a pretty long cord goes in your pillow case under your pillow, under your sheets, or mattress. I've never bothered with the mattress, seems like it wouldn't be strong enough to wake me.
Also, definitely change the sounds of your cell phone alarms frequently so your brain doesn't get too used to tuning out the same ringtones. Make them increasingly obnoxious. See if your phone has an option to increase the volume of the alarms the longer they ring.
My "I have to get up now OR ELSE" alarm is set to one that reads the time out loud to me. A human sounding voice gets my sleeping brain's attention better. I guess things that tell my sleeping brain that there is someone in the room (voice, physical shaking) wake me easier because of the little jolt of adrenaline my body gives me to react to someone being unexpectedly nearby. I have a pixel phone so I can also set a morning routine, which includes the weather and stuff being read aloud. Not sure if that's an android thing or google thing.
I've never bothered with the light idea. I can sleep in full sunshine no problem. It is so crazy to me that it works for some people. They are SO LUCKY. Most of them have no idea what waking is like for hard sleepers or people with sleep disorders and don't know how lucky they are.

There's an alarm on amazon that has a puck and will vibrate your whole bed. If anyone replies to this I'll link it from my computer. I could sleep through only sound alarm, but when your bed starts shaking you're going to wake up.

If you have the money buy this alarm on Amazon. It's loud and also it has a thing the size of a hockey puck that you can put under your pillow that vibrates. Your body can't really ignore your pillow/head vibrating so it works every time, at least in my experience.
Short term solution: Get a sonic bomb alarm clock (vibrates your pillow or bed and flashes a light instead of noise - you can adjust the volume on the one linked below) and get some decent ear plugs (silicone or foam, I recommend Mack’s, you can find them on Amazon.)

Official policy states that 3 write-ups is automatic termination. I got a write-up the first week by forgetting to submit my timecard. The next two were because I slept through my alarm and either missed or arrived late to my Monday morning shift, two weeks in a row. I literally bought the loudest alarm I could find on amazon, and I'll sleep straight through it (as well as my phone alarm), sometimes for hours.
He knows that I'm good at my job. All the feedback I've received from students has been overwhelmingly positive, and I genuinely love what I do. Unfortunately, the higher-ups only see the write-ups and they're not happy. He actually put his reputation on the line by defending me after the third offense, and then I screwed up a fourth time by not noticing my name on the schedule since it was a different color than the other shifts.
I don't know what to do right now. I'm in an insane amount of debt from student loans, and my GPA is under 2.5, so unless I can find an internships that'll accept me, I basically have nothing of value on my resume. This job is my only source of income besides the bare minimum I need to survive coming from loans. I'm starting to regret ever going to university in the first place, but it's too late to give up.

This is the type of alarm deaf people use. I’ve used it and good god it’s loud. And if you don’t want to wake up your roommate you can use the bed shaker thing. It works pretty well. I got it so I wouldn’t wake up my roommate.
Well for starters this alarm clock is bright and loud af and has a puck to go under your pillow and vibrates to aid in waking you, works pretty well for me.
On the other hand if you really want to make this work, despite the danger and expense, I think the most practical would be to tilt the bed 45 degrees to the side. For a 38” wide twin side bed that means lifting one side 38” which will move it about 11” to the side and that gives us the required stroke, 40”. You gave a force required of 160 lbs, technically it only needs to lift half that to tilt the bed, but with bedding or age that requirement will grow, I’d say 120lbs for the force. This is a fairly strong (aka $$$) piston/linear actuator but on the bright side it doesn’t need to actuate very quickly. A quick look on google shows many 40” linear actuators, and it seems they have force to spare, but they run ~150-200$. And you’ll need a power supply as well. It might be possible to get it done cheaper with pneumatics, but you’ll have to do your own research.
As a final note you mentioned taking melatonin every night, for me personally when I take melatonin I wake up super groggy, you might have an easier time waking up without it, as long as you can fall asleep at a reasonable time.
Get him a deaf alarm clock. Shakes your bed vigorously and has an increased decibel level alarm. No excuse. Some even can connect to lamps and flash the lights in the room. Lights flashing, loud as hell, and vigorous shaking should wake him up.

I have terrible trouble getting up in the morning, and this is the only alarm that works for me. It. Is. Deafening. It has flashing lights, and a bed-shaker, which is like a 4-inch pellet-shaped thing which you put under your mattress or pillow, and it shakes the shit out of your bed.
It scares the crap out of me every morning, but it wakes me up. I absolutely swear by it - I owe my job to it, many times over.

Any maximum strength sleeping pill at 9:30 (maybe 2). I like audio books. Don't get anything with a big plot line. I like non-fiction. Put the book on for 30 minutes. (If MMJ is legal where you are, I totally recommend that instead.) I also suggest a humidifier. Get one without a filter and use bottled water.
As for waking up. Timy Alarm Clock. You have to solve problems. I would also get a loud alarm clock.
Edited to say,eat a good breakfast with protein. Have a bold good coffee. Eat a good lunch but not too heavy. You need protein. Have an afternoon snack. Keep an energy drink or iced coffee around for emergencies. If you nap after work, keep it to 20 minutes.

Bought this a few months ago, it has been incredible. It shakes the entire bed and makes noises on the level of a hurricane warning. I'm the type of person to sleep through everything or just turn it off and go back to sleep, but I can't go back to sleep after it goes off.

Sleep inertia is a monster in narcolepsy and is my worst symptom. Its caused by trying to wake up durring the wrong sleep cycle. The body us suppost to cycle up and down throughout the night and should be at a low level durring the morning, but even if you got woken in the middle of the night you would wake disorientated but the body should be able to cycle diwn and get awake quickly. pwn have a hard time regulating which sleep cycle we are in.
Waking up is the hardest thing i do all day and im a registered nurse working acute care. You cannot even begin to understand the sensation of sleep inertia. For me its feels like im sleeping at the bottom of the ocean with the weight of all the water on top of me. Even if i wake up, the weight remains and pushes me right back to sleep. There is no pushing past this sensation, even if my kids were in danger, i dont think i could pull out of it. Its emotionally damaging to need other people to help you wake up, i feel like a child. But physical stimulation helps pull me out of it, just touching my arm or face seems to remind my body that life is waiting for me to wake up.
So if you want him to wake quickly your best bet would be pretty intense phyical stimulation, then walking away for a few mins, not long 5mins top. Give his body some time to pull out of it, then stimulate again. Yelling or being mad will not be helpful and can be quite damaging to a relationship. Im glad uou care enough to recognize this in your post already. But vest case scenario is he learns to manage this himself, it feels so good to beat sleep inertia and be able to be more productive in the morning.
I have been working with my doctor to combat it. I use the sonic bomb alarm clock, i set it and then when it shakes the bed i wake but just press snooze, it gives me 5 mins then shakes again, i keep doing this untill i can sip some coffee or take my meds. I keep repeating untill i can pull out of sleep. It used to take me 1 hour to 1.5 hours so i just set my alarm early enough to get our of bed on time. Shock clock is another option that wont disturb you, but wake him. Prozac and modafinil first thing in the morning seems to help, but i need food on my stomach. I bought a wifi set of electrical plugs on walmart wesite. i connected a large lamp and an electic blanket to it and then programed the plug to turn them on right before im suppost to wake up. the light and warmth help stimulaye me. its better now. Baclophen, or xywav at night to help stucture sleep and less stress also seem to be helping with this problem

I am a graduating US MD student with severe DSPD.

I tell people with DSPD that they must be tough. You have to set an amount of time in bed and if you don't sleep during that time, you get up anyway. Give yourself a 9 hour window to sleep and nothing more. You can't sleep in on the weekends more than an hour or two past your regular bedtime. Your bedroom, while it should be dark during the night, should also have open windows that light it up when the sun it up. You could also get a programmable happy lamp to hit your face or mimic a sunrise. You can also use 5 mg melatonin 2-3 hours before your bedtime to help regulate your sleep cycle. Exercise will also help tremendously. You may also see your doctor about prescription sleep medicines if the behavioral stuff doesn't work. Minimize alcohol.
I do all this + prescription sleep med and have changed from 6AM to 2 PM sleep schedule to 12AM-7AM (8-9AM on weekends). I still can never sleep before 12, but my life is effectively changed.

I dont use it anymore though; I've just made a point of going to sleep around the same time and waking myself up at the same time regardless of what I'm doing that day. So I usually just wake up when I need to without an alarm. Occasionally when I'm tired I will sleep a bit later though and I have a light alarm clock. It just gradually makes my room brighter and it's a much nicer way to wake up.

Those are my two solutions and they've worked for me. Other than that it's a matter of teaching him healthy sleeping habits. Other tricks are to set the alarm out of reach so that you have to get up to turn it off, no snooze, as soon as you wake up get up, I used to have a big glass of water there to drink, and then just move around or exercise. Do that for a month and he should have no issues waking up on his own.

I find I don't wake up to a lot of the stock alarms these days, because many of them don't even sound like alarms. I'm not gonna wake up to some chimes that sound like a lullaby. Every time I get a new phone the first thing I do is download the cyanalarm.ogg, the default alarm of the old Cyanogenmod. I've also seen it labelled as NuclearLaunch. That alarm will wake the fuck out of you. First time I used it I swear I woke up already on my feet with my heart racing, literally jumped out of bed as an automatic reaction the second it started. If you can sleep through that alarm at full volume, there's something wrong with you.

I have this exact same problem. So as of right now the way that I barley wake up is... I have one crap alarm clock that I would toss in a heartbeat but its noise so whatever. I have another alarm clock called the sonic boom (you can get it on amazon). It has a vibrating piece that you can put under your mattress but it didn't do a ton so i put it under my pillow. The problem with that was I would angrily smash my alarm clock and wake up with an instant headache lol. So i put both alarm clocks across my room on the dresser and I leave that vibrating piece on my wood floors for the loudest most obnoxious noise you'll ever hear. I was getting out of bed and turning them off, not conscious enough to make the right decision so the last thing I added has been a life saver. Go to the app store on your phone and download Alarmy. You can set it to do math problems to turn off the alarm. I currently have to do 12 math problems to wake up. It's like 98 + 67, nothing too complicated but enough to make you never want to fall back asleep lol. Also the other thing I am going to get next is a wake up light that mimics natural sunlight. So say you set your alarm for 0430 like I do, at 0415 it gradually gets brighter until its brightest setting at 0430.

You can use the disc under your mattress as recommended, which will shake your whole bed. I prefer to put the clock across the room. I get out of bed IMMEDIATELY because I feel bad that the whole building can hear my alarm.
