I just bought this camera off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digitial-3-0-Inch-16-50mm/dp/B00I8BICCG/ref=sr_1_2?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1512709143&sr=1-2&keywords=sony%2Ba6000&th=1
The Base Configuration. What lens should I buy for it?
All phone cameras suck. Complaining about them is like spiting hairs. If you really want to take a nice picture get a real camera. If you can't afford one I understand, but if you can you wont look back. This awesome starter camera will make you feel like a pro. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Alpha-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera/dp/B00I8BICCG
Awesome, thanks for the recommendations! I'll be sure to check out all the models you mentioned before tomorrow. Isn't the Sony A6000 a power zoom though? I may be mistaken, however isn't it best to avoid power zooms? Thanks again for your help!
In your price range I would probably recommend the Sony a6000 with the 16-50mm lens. It's great for it's price and still pretty compact that wont's be such a hassle to bring on day trips or dates. It's probably also the most bang for your buck you can get today in my mind. You also have the ability to change lenses with that camera which isn't the case with the RX100 or the GoPro which is locked to a very wide angle lens.
I would say that the a6000 is a better choice than the D3200 (both in size comparison and performance) and it has a larger image sensor than the OM-D E-M10 which in my eyes is a big plus (I also didn't really like the handling of the OM-D but that more a personal preference thing). I haven't tried the Pentax K-50 so I can't really say anything about that camera.
To summarise I would say that you should get the a6000 unless you want the camera to fit in your pocket. In that case I would recommend the Sony RX100 III which you should be able to find it under $700 used.
a6000 body only is $400 on amazon (black currently sold out) and with kit lens for $550: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I8BICCG/ref=twister_B00Q7QEPY8?_encoding=UTF8&th=1
I haven't personally ever bought a camera used but I know there are a lot of good places to get a solid deal on an a6000 as it has been out for a while and one of the more popular mirrorless cameras. Sounds like you have a good eye on eBay.
I would check out /r/photomarket as you can get an a6000 for $300-400 depending on amount of shutter count, overall condition, and if it comes with the kit lens. You also might search your local Craigslist and Facebook marketplace for an a6000, might not have any luck but it is worth a shot. You also might check Adorama or B&H as they occasionally have them as well. Your best bet would probably be /r/photomarket thought.
If you want new Amazon usually has it on sale every few months around $400 for the body only. You can check the camelcamelcamel here. If you want the kit lens with it they usually go for $500, again you can check here regarding the historic prices on Amazon. Usually if it goes on sale through Amazon it will be on sale on other sites like Adorama, B&H, etc. If you can hold off I would personally go for a new one via Amazon the next time it goes down to $400.
I am just getting into photography ( I am also interested in video, but I feel like I will mostly be taking photos) , and am looking to get my first camera. Right now I'm torn between the Sony a6000 or the Panasonic G7, both are priced very well right now.
Also, is there any lens that you recommend for the camera you suggest? Will mostly be shooting nature shots.
I believe it’s the Sony alpha a6000 mirrorless. Which also has a white version. The exact lens is a mystery though. Sony a6000 Amazon
Let it be known I'm a total noob with cameras. It's this model: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I8BICCG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
with a Sony SELP1650 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens attached. I'm not sure why it's so grainly and I can't actually take a photo with it. It's not a refurbished model either. Any idea what to do with it?
Hey man - I've been shooting with the setup below a bit. It's not the best or the sharpest but the sony autofocus is pretty good especially in good light. Only time I've had trouble is in snow- it keeps trying to focus on the snow.
Here's an album with some examples of what it can do, there's more if you feel like browsing around on that page. I'm not a great photographer but I think it's a versatile setup. Most of the shots are probably 75ish yards from the surfers.

Just taking a look now, I assume this would be the model to purchase?
Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera - Body only https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00I8BICCG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_cqZhBbADCAWBG
you can buy an a6000 in the US right now at $600 with lenses or $400 without
https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Alpha-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera/dp/B00I8BICCG/
probably a better route
Sony A6000 is one of the best and affordable camera this year. It's a 24- megapixel, best autofocus, best fast shooter for sports, shoots amazing photos, and small and portable! Usually the camera costs between $400(body without a kit lens) and $500-$700(With camera lens)
With camera lens: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1029860-REG/sony_ilce6000l_b_alpha_a6000_mirrorless_digital.html
Helpful reviews:
Hi /u/Niggofication - at $398, the A6000 body is a great deal - as long as you're OK with the camera's lack of a mic jack, 1920x1080p resolution (with no upgrade path to 4K) and inability to take the mic off the camera to get it closer to your subjects.
Instead of spending $398 for a camera body + $128.95 for the mic + $300 for a lens (total $826.95) - you might want to consider saving some money with a $597.99 (on sale) Panasonic G7 with the 14-42mm kit lens and a free Audio Technica AT8024 shotgun mic.
This camera has 4 times the A6000's video resolution (3840x2160 pixels versus 1920x1080); can record for hours continuously (the A6000 stops recording after 30 minutes and has to be restarted - which can be a problem for long events); and has a built-in mic jack, so you can add preamps or better, boom mounted or lavalier microphones later.
Add a $185 25mm f1.7 lens for low light, and you'll still end up spending less than for the A6000 package.
Plus, you'll get a camera that can produce images that look like this:
Narrative
Documentary
Travel/Nature
And here are a couple of examples from YouTube (please watch at 2160p and your monitor's highest resolution):
Panasonic Lumix G7 / G70 Launch - 4K - 4KPhoto Modes (shot in photo/video mode - each frame is an 8MP still photo)
It's a pretty good still camera too: https://www.flickr.com/groups/panasonic-lumix-g7/pool/
One caveat - the prices here are current as of this post and are marked down significantly for Black Friday. If budget permits, you might want to jump on these deals now.
Hope this is helpful and best of luck on your trip!
Hello all,
I will be moving to Japan in October and wanted to buy a new camera. The main things I will be photographing are shrines, landscapes, street photography, and just stuff that's in front of me.
I was thinking about the Sony A6000 and the Sony 50mm f/1.8
Would this combo do what i am looking for? I'm not looking to get more than one lens at the moment and wanted to be efficient as possible. Is amazon the best place to buy this or do you know of any other place that's cheaper or has a better deal?
Also one last semi related question, does anyone know of any good messenger bags that will hold a laptop, ipad, camera, and just other random stuff?
Thanks!
Thanks for the tip! Aren't power zooms supposed to be avoided though?
I was planning to just buy the A6000 + a 16-50mm + a 55-210mm which at Amazon is only $900 whereas the A7 body-only is $1200 ($1500 + 28-70mm). In a way I could just use that extra $300 for another lens that could be better than the two kit lenses instead of paying for what could be another camera when I buy the A7 with a kit lens. Plus this would be my first actually good camera but now that I think of it, I'm not really sure I want to spend super big bucks on my first good camera.
Personally I tried my brothers rx10 on a trip to grand canyon as my 60D was being repaired. Overall a good camera, the reason it wasn't great is it hunts A Lot, when auto focusing. So I got a number of pictures that were either blurry or not what I wanted to focus on. The other big downside is zooming even using the ring is slow, not horribly sluggish but enough that I missed a few really great photo opportunities
Afterwards I did some research and found the Sony A6000 http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Alpha-a6000-Interchangeable-Camera/dp/B00I8BICCG. - comes with 2 lenses and still is 200$ cheaper.
For one its cheaper and has interchangeable lenses and better image quality, auto focus and based on pictures I've taken much less noise at higher ISOs Short of this I'd recommend the Canon G16 or S120 both around $350 and for the price awesome picture quality though if you wanted there's also the Canon S110 for $179 that is pretty close in picture quality and performance to the S120. Hope this helps
http://snapsort.com/compare/Sony-Alpha-A6000-vs-Sony-Cyber-shot-DSC-RX10

Edit: added more information
/u/TonightsWhiteKnight - I agree with you on the GH4 for video, but I'd probably get a $548 Sony A6000 body for higher iso and more still image resolution than you can get from the T5i, as seen here.
It's a much better video camera as well, with Sony's great XAVC S codec, 1080/60p slow motion and a viewfinder that actually works while you're recording video.
Here is the video image quality you can get out of this camera in XAVC S:
Malibu Beach Shoot | Making-Of by Alexander Wätzel (slightly NSFW)
K a k o p e r a t o by Antonis Davis (A6000 and NEX6)
With a $59.99 Canon to E mount adapter, the A6000 can share the Rokinons with your GH4.
Again, hope this is helpful and good luck with rebuilding your kit!
