Jinotepe is in the middle of 2, I think, volcanoes that erupt with sparks and smoke all the time. Impressive, but sometimes sulfury up on the ridges. Take a bus to the nearest Pacific side beaches, La Boquita, etc. Wonderful all year round. Take your own food & buy cold beer. Also visit Lago de Apoyo a fizzy floaty lake in an ancient volcano. Total luxury. Fun. Usually put your wallet deep in your front pocket with a bandana on top or something such, & some $$ in your shoe, pick pockets love crowded bus lines on & off. Watch out. Otherwise very safe. Just hang out and practice your Spanish with your family. Then when you come home you"ll have an advantage job hunting. Nicas are mestizos, very mixed culture with lots of people of all different colors & backgrounds from very black to light. Some w/ red hair and blue/green or light colored skin & eyes. So you won't stand out particularly. Nicas are generally very friendly/amistoso, but with limited Spanish/background, I would avoid political discussions. The US has a dark history with this country. Remember the Contras trying to overthrow the Sandinistas. Many families lost sons, daughters & friends, and remember this w/ great sadness. Also, many people love to practice their English, if you are lucky enough to have a family member w/ some English, then exchange tips and language help. Talk, talk talk. Also, if you buy the beer, many of your cousins (primos) will be delighted, if they aren't working, to be a travel buddy. Depending on the financial situation of your cousins, maybe they will buy the beer for help with English. Who knows? You will be very lucky to enjoy this wonderful country.
