Take out a blank sheet of paper. Draw a large circle which encompasses almost the entire sheet. Label that circle "web design." Next draw a small circle, about one-tenth the size of the large circle, anywhere inside the larger one. Label that "look and feel." Within the smaller circle, place a tiny speck. Label the speck "beauty."
In web design, that's how important beauty is. "Look and feel" is only important insofar as it creates credibility and trust with the user, and so long as it does not get in the way of what the user is trying to do.
If beauty was really important, companies like Craigslist, eBay, and Amazon would be much less successful.
