I am thinking ssd with an external enclosure.
SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E M-Key Solid State Drive External Enclosure (Fits only NVMe PCIe 2242/2260/2280) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_80VWEE9G7BYJ4M1CKF2J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If you have USB-C, get something like this:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MNFH1PX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and as big of a SSD as you need for whatever games you can afford, NVMe.
TB3 ssd would be great but super expensive for no real world performance benefit in games.
No, you would purchase a USB to NVMe tool like this one, and test it on another computer. Somebody would let you use.
And the best windows installation tool is the one you download online, the Windows Media Creation Tool for Windows 10. It will let you create the latest windows installation key. Plus there's some features that you can use in it that isn't available in some of the store bought versions.
This is the one I used. Gets quite toasty but speeds were excellent.
All kinds of cloning and partitioning software out there, take your pick.
Keep an old 256 NVMe in it now that I cloned.
SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
No, what I’m saying is that you buy a new SSD and put it in an SSD enclosure which lets you use it externally. Like this: link
It's a $30 inland 256gb microcenter M2 ssd in this case from amazon. I had it lying around to do data transfer when I bought a new SSD.
https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
To attach it, I used a couple velcro adhesive strips you can find at any walmart/target/home depot etc

You could definitely use a micro SD card, I just didn't want to mess with A1 vs A2 etc. I've read on here slower cards, A1 cards can cause crashing on your windows install etc
Thanks for replying!
This is the adapter: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/
I have two, one for each type of drive, and they both exhibit the same grille failure. I don't have the link on mobile, but apparently this adapter works with raspberry pi.
You will have to somehow format the SSD.
Option 1 - This requires removing the SSD from the laptop, putting it in an enclosure, connecting it to another machine, go to diskmanager and format, then the drive will be able to accept windows.
You will need the below enclosure unless you have another machine with a free SSD slot. https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=m.2+nvme+ssd+enclosure+adapter&pd_rd_r=add3a9af-0e9d-42f1-81e2-a0283b311475&pd_rd_w=TxHpz&pd_rd_wg=Qx84E&pf_rd_p=4fa0e97a-13a4-491b-a1...
Option 2 - Run the Ubuntu OS, go to disk manager, split the SSD, 100GB's should do, ensure the format is GPT. Then restart and install Windows on that partition, once in Windows, delete the Ubuntu partition.
Let me know
I have one of these that I think Ill use: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=nvme+enclosure&qid=1641428347&sr=8-4
Just wish I could have a micro-sized usb drive that would do the same thing.
I might grab one of these just to try, but not too hopeful. My goal is just to install Windows, and play a game or two, so it might be OK (maybe).
I have a 970 evo (pm981 OEM version) on my windows desktop as boot drive and I am switching to a laptop. Can I use an external m.2 enclosure to access its data without any formatting?
You should have a USB port so I was thinking of using this one myself:
But I have the ssd with the Samsung heat sink so I’m not sure if this enclosure is tall enough to fit it inside.
Ohhh okay. So you've got an NVMe SSD that's keyed for B and M. So all you need is an NVMe to USB adapter like this one and you should be good.
Yiu can buy an m.2 nvme usb enclosure like this which lets you connect a nvme drive via usb. https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/
Then use any cloning software to clone the old nvme to the new nvme connected via usb. After done, uninstall old nvme and install new nvme to motherboard.
Or you can also use this method with cloning software which supports creating a bootable usb drive. Backup up boot drive as a disk image to a sata drive. Then take out old nvme and install new nvne. Boot with cloning software bootable usb and copy disk image saved on sata drive to new nvme.
B450 only supports speeds up to PCIe generation 3.0. Those ports will work with a 4.0 drive but they will not run at full speeds. 3.0 drives will be cheaper, so it’s probably better to go that route unless you’re planning a full system upgrade.
You can buy an external connection for an M.2 drive, at which point you could clone the drive with Macrium or the like. It does mean more stuff, though I guess that does give you a (fairly small) external storage drive if you want it.
The easiest solution is usually just to pull everything you want off the drive and install your OS fresh. It doesn’t actually take that long and it costs nothing extra.
Sounds like a bad nvme drive to me. I have a similar motherboard (X570 Aorus Master) with a 2TB Sabrent Rocket in the 1st NVME slot as a boot drive and a 256GB one in the second slot as a game drive (not sure the brand, I took it from an upgraded laptop). They both work for me.
Maybe try putting the 2TB nvme in a drive enclosure to see if it is even visible once you have booted...
Yeah.
This is the one I used. Offered m2 to usb c, and includes a usb c to usb c cable, and a usb c to usb 3.0 cable. I didn't enclose the new m2 all the way though, I just left it on the frame and it worked just fine for my needs.
Internally? No. You can't add more NVMe slots to a NUC.
On an ATX motherboard it's possible do via a PCIe card adaptor.
On the NUC you have two options:
Do you have ones of the NUC that has space for a NVMe drive and a 2.5 inch drive? If yes, then you can buy a SATA SSD and put that in the NUC.
You can take one of the SSDs out and put it inside a USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure. You will be throttled to 10Gbps, but that is still decently fast for most use cases:
You gave 2 options.
One expensive and probably overkill depending on your SSD speed and quality, and requires thunderbolt whuch you don't have anyway so I won't detail it, but it's basically thunderbolt 3 nvme enclosures.
The other one is actually pretty much the same - nvme external enclosures but over your run of the mill USB3 10Gbps. These are more sensibly priced, but cap out at 10Gbps/1.25GB/s (and my own tests haven't gone beyond 0.950ish GB/s, but this is usuallt fast enough for most uses and won't hamper any game too much. There are similar adapters for 2.5 SATA that cap out at 500ish MB/s but they're cheaper and kay still be enough for your uses, but maybe you don't have a 2.5 sata ssd around anyway which makes this moot and more expensive than reusing your NVMe ssd.
Here's an example: SSK M.2 Caja ssd Adaptador de Carcasa NVME de Aluminio, USB 3.1/3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) a NVME PCI-E M-Key Unidad de Estado sólido Carcasa Externa (Solo se Adapta a NVMe PCIe 2242/2260/2280) https://www.amazon.es/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_BY0FPWY6HCYYRG98YNK3
Do read the reviews as some of these actually bring bad cables (either the usb-c, the usb-a or both!). Ideally get one that bringa the two cable flavours for versatility as your laptop may have different ports or not all may support 10Gbps. Do NOT get an enclosure that say 5Gbps as they will bottleneck your ssd, and cost the same anyway.
so something like this doesn't work? does it show up in bios or device manager or disk management?
Assuming the SSD is good, you can just get an enclosure and access it via USB: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
Those computer shops must have misunderstood the question (I hope). This is basic PC repair stuff.
You can always buy an external case for the said SSD(nvme or 2.5"), house the SSD in it and bring it with you. Something like this for your Nvme M2 SSD for example.
>I have like 4 NVME Drives and only one m.2 spot on my mobo
Get something like this, stick your extra nvme into them and use them as portable external ssd.
How has it been running on the adapter? Did you get one like this that plugs through usb?
That link doesn't work for me. Not sure if that 2400mbps you're referencing is nvme write speed or a case that is suggesting a transfer rate that high which doesn't seem possible. The case I got is below, €25, does the job.
You won't find an nvme with a write speed much lower than 2400 and I wouldn't seek one out but mainly saying I don't think it makes any sense putting a samsung 970 pro in an external case. Other thing to look at is TBW on the lower end models, you don't want it to crap out on you before you've filled your storage. Each plot uses 1.6 tbw.
Not specifically the same as your use case, but this is the adapter I bought to use an older SSD as an external drive. Should work fine from what I can find on the SP4 SSD type and keying.
Is the a good one
Deal: SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E M-Key Solid State Drive External Enclosure (Fits only NVMe PCIe 2242/2260/2280) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_N0HPFV00G6K5ZH1JNE2Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NGFF NVME PCI-E M-Key Solid State Drive External Enclosure (Fits only NVMe PCI https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_WArQuVwJAd6mQ
Pretty sure it doesn’t matter. I am guessing to format as fat I would have had to specify that and I didn’t. I loaded windows the same as I always would I deleted all portions when I was booting from the usb and installed from there
Do you have perhaps a laptop or another desktop with an m.2 slot? you could feasibly install it there, make sure you boot from your laptop's original drive in bios, and copy the files off that way.
If you don't have any other computers with an NVME slot, you can get an enclosure. Be aware NVME-> USB solutions are somewhat expensive relative to their SATA counterparts. Something like this would probably work quite well.
If you're planning to use it as your primary drive, you can use a program like Macrium Reflect to clone the drive. Just be sure to boot into your new drive and wipe your old one to prevent having two separate Windows installs. The method I prefer for this is to have a external SSD enclosure like this one: Amazon.com: SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E M-Key Solid State Drive External Enclosure (Fits only NVMe PCIe 2242/2260/2280): Computers & Accessories
Put the new drive in there, run the cloning software. Once the cloning software is complete, disconnect the external and shutdown your laptop. Swap the drives so that the new drive is now in the laptop and your old drive is in the external. Boot up the laptop with the new drive in place of the old, once you've logged into Windows, connect the external drive (that now houses your old drive) and proceed to format the external drive. You can now either place the drive into your laptop as a storage drive, or leave it as an external.
The reason I do it that way is that I've found it to be the best at preventing EFI boot issues where for some reason it will still rely on the old drive for the boot files.
I ended up getting this nvme ssd enclosure and putting a Samsung evo 980 in it. I had the drive laying around from a laptop I replaced, but they do come down in price often and are pretty fast:
SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E M-Key Solid State Drive External Enclosure (Fits only NVMe PCIe 2242/2260/2280) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_ljQ6Fb9K0Y0N7
It can’t run the series x/s games though. I just use it for storage on games I’m not currently playing but want to keep downloaded and ready if o want.
You either buy one of those $20 enclosures or just use another PC to copy your stuff. I use the latter option. Not ideal, but I only have to this like 1-2 a year.
I have a few in my cart here is one that’s in my cart SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E M-Key Solid State Drive External Enclosure (Fits only NVMe PCIe 2242/2260/2280) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_qpE6FbH5HJ31V?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If you can, try to have the full PCIe 3.0 x16. Depending in what CPU you have, it might be worth either upgrading your motherboard to support PCIe 4.0 or upgrade both to create less of a bottleneck. If you want the absolute cheapest option, you can use only one of the m.2 slots and get an external adapter for the second one to use as a portable SSD. https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=m.2+usb+enclosure&qid=1605380916&sr=8-3
That enclosure will actually allow speeds up to 1250 megabytes per second on a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port, so there's not even a major performance loss! Just make sure that if you do get an enclosure, it supports either SATA or NVMe, depending on which interface your m.2 uses. Sorry about your B450 limitations! Enjoy your 3079 though... I'm stuck with a 1050 Ti and an R7 370pX waiting for 6700 XT to release lol
This is what I had already ordered.
And this is the ssd. I'm pretty sure it's not m and b. But I'm not sure about what specifically will work for it.

Thanks for your help!
I think what you want to do is buy a m.2 ssd enclosure adapter off amazon like $25. What this will do is Clone your current ssd through usb, to the adapter which has your new m.2 SSD (more storage). Once that’s cloned, unplug and simply swap your old m.2 with the new one into your computer.
It should act like nothing is different other than more storage.
SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E M-Key Solid State Drive External Enclosure (Fits only NVMe PCIe 2242/2260/2280) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8ebhFb4PJHJYQ
I have this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_22ZJ39NRDC0FJQHW97NW
I like it
Well you have a few options :
Personally I used the back-up and restore method :D (it was faster mostly due to running linux)
$24 for a nice solid metal usb c case https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/
and $59 for the ssd. so ~$85 all together compared to the P50 $117 and with no moving parts a lot smaller. I'd go for the NVMe. you could even go for a 1tb and it would be a tiny bit more expensive https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-NAND-NVMe-PCIe-2400MB/dp/B089DNM8LR/
I’m using this: https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-black-sn750-nvme-1tb/p/N82E16820250110 stored in this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX?ref_=pe_2640190_261118450_302_E_DDE_dt_1. It gets pretty hot though so just something to keep in mind.
I Just bought https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX?psc=1&smid=A41S1C1L96T2O&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp

it's compatible with M.2 2280's
I was reading reviews for another enclosure product to make sure WD and Samsung ssd's were compatible (the insignia product on BestBuy I was looking at appeared to have driver issues with WD cards so my OS migration was gonna stink up)
I’ve been running the full build not including the most recent game add-ons without issue. Initially I had overheating issues with a crappy housing but switching to the unit below has been working great for me.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
If you decide to do the later updates then you’ll need a 2TB NVMe.
Then you'll want a USB enclosure for the transfer process.
https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/
Something like that will allow you to connect the new drive to the PC for the transfer then you just swap which one is inside the machine when you're done.
First, you would buy a USB to NVMe adapter like this:
SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E M-Key
Then, you can use the Lazesoft Recovery Suite to clone the old drive in the computer to the new one in the USB.
Lazesoft Recovery Suite Home Editio
Then once it's cloned, just swap them out. You can even put your old NVMe SSD in this new case and use it for external storage.
Macrium Reflect Free will do it - https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree?mo
Also - get a NVME USB adapter -- then you only have to do the clone once. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
I mean, 37$ and it's not that big:
https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
For real. Why so many connector types, Jeez? Anyway I'm now getting this one
https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=sr\_1\_4
SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SSD... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
The one I just bought, price is right and it will be here tomorrow. Sorry, couldn't find one on GameStop.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_dl_VH0EQ6B4K2NSQK9NXSGS
Copy everything to an external drive, then copy back. Or, buy something like this and copy straight to it.
I bought this other one and very happy with it no issues

I bought two of these and put two of these in them and they've been rock solid for going on 3 years. USB is fine. The "issues" people have with USB drives is not with the connection, but with the lower quality flash memory (maybe) and the poor heat dissipation for USB3 thumbsticks (the much more likely cause of premature USB drive failure). You will not have either issue with metal enclosures (great heatsinks) and SSD drives.
You could do the same with 2.5" drive USB enclosures, but that would be very bulky. You could also do the same with M.2 NVME enclosures (note that unlike the M.2 slot on some motherboards, enclosures are always either SATA or NVME, not both) but then you're buying more expensive drives for no reason (boot doesn't need to be fast, just stable). IMHO, 128GB-ish of M.2 SATA in USB enclosures is the sweet spot for boot, balancing not eating up slots useful for data drives while also providing redundancy (you can easily mirror these) and ease of access if one ever needs to be replaced (unlikely, but it made it easy to switch from USB flash -- remove one old drive, plug in one new drive, resilver, repeat).
I'm using a 1TB NVMe drive in the SSK NVMe Enclosure over USB-C on my M1 mini, works a treat.

I wouldn't buy that thing from China it may never get here.. buy this one, and yes it should work just fine. Just plug it in, find the files, and copy/paste them
https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
You can use Macrium Reflect (the free version) to clone your drive. There are external drive enclosures like this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MNFH1PX/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A41S1C1L96T2O&psc=1
Sounds like a bad display. You won’t get it fixed by Friday though, so here is what you need to do:
Purchase an NVME enclosure for your drive. This one on Amazon looks to be the cheapest, but anything with “NVME” and “m.2” in the features should work.
Remove your drive from the laptop. It’s the easiest component to remove on the device and is very obvious once you take the bottom panel off. If you want a guide, this video shows a teardown; you only need to follow to the point where the bottom has been removed.
Enclose the SSD in your enclosure and plug up to a Linux desktop. Alternatively, you can boot to the drive, but do not try to access the folders from another Windows, as the file owner will be rewritten and cause installation issues when you fix your display. The Linux aspect here is important as Linux will not try to rewrite file permissions. You can make an Ubuntu bootable USB following this guide so you don’t have to install Linux anywhere, just use the “try” option when you boot.
Copy the project from your enclosed SSD to Google drive or a second thumb drive. Files on the live USB will not stay after you shut down.

This caddy should work right? I just download Macrium and clone? Also, what kind of RAM is optimal for this motherboard? Apparently 2933mhz is the max speed.
I was thinking of getting these but they don't have 3000mhz 2x16 just 3200mhz. I'm guessing it's okay to get 3200 and just have them run at 2933mhz?
This is the one I bought for the same purpose last year : https://smile.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
So I could plug the M2 drive into an nvme to usb 3.1 adapter?
Board upgrade or new enclosure?
Hello. I have a ASRock B450M Pro4 board. https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450M%20Pro4/index.asp
I had a 256GB ADATA XPG SX6000PNP in the first m2 slot. It was almost full so I upgraded. I had a 1TB Crucial P1 in this enclosure and it worked fine. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MNFH1PX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So I cloned the ADATA to the P1, and put it in the first m2 slot. I just got a SK Hynix Gold P31 1TB NVMe. I know I can't put it in the second m2 slot since it is only for SATA drives. I put the P31 in the enclosure but it keeps giving an error in Windows.
Read Device Info failed. SCSI Error detected. Status : 0x02 CHECK CONDITION Sense Key : 0x05 ILLEGAL REQUEST ASC : 0x20 ASCQ : 0x0
I'd like to be able to use the faster drive. Would the smarter upgrade being getting a new board? It looks like a x570 would be the only thing that would work with having 2 PCIe NVMe's, or is there another type of external enclosure that would allow me to use the P31?
Thanks alot for any help on this.
I've actually opened up my laptop to access my SSD to see if it was a loose connection type of thing. Sadly it wasn't, my SSD is a Nvme m.2 SSD and I don't have a desktop. I mainly have laptops lying around, would something like this work instead: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX?
Or put it in an USB 3.1 enclosure and use it as an external drive.

That enclosure is dope, and looks awesome, but I'm sure a 20 dollar one from Amazon or Newegg would work also. I have the one linked below and it is working fine. If it were me ( a borderline digital hoarder) I would spend a hair more and step up to a larger capacity drive and same money on the enclosure, 1TB and 2TB drives are at near parity $ per gig.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GVDNTGJ/ref=cm\_sw\_r\_tw\_dp\_W11MYE3XXABV8V4C918R
That combo would be 220 bucks vs 160.
As far as the software goes, if clonezilla works, great. If it doesn't you can always look for something else, maybe just do a free trial of Acronis.
Get this one I use it all the time for work and it's cheap. You can also fully image your ssd then after it's in there on your old laptop following this.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/61026-backup-restore-macrium-reflect.html
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MNFH1PX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've been using this enclosure and the speed rate has been excellent and haven't had any disconnections.
Only issue with using an external drive as a game drive is that you need to make sure that you add the external drive as a game library so your game launchers know to search for it.
I think its better to get an NVME-to-USB enclosure for the time being and use it externally. The 5Gb/s will throttle the performance but should be enough until you decide to upgrade the system down the line.

I read around that you can modify the BIOS for these old boards to support NVMe drives but its risky and requires some time tinkering with it.
this enclosure plus any NVMe drive that fits inside.
Okay, so I read the manual for my MOBO, and turns out I didn't do enough research. It says, " The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled." So, I was wondering if something like this: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=sr_1_3?crid=JM0UT6F5AX8H&dchild=1&keywords=m.2+enclosure&qid=1607395326&sprefix=m.2+en%2Caps%2C186&sr=8-3 would solve my problems?
Good timing on that comment 😀 I have an M.2 2280 format 256GB, and there's a good cyber Monday price on an external usb Gen 2 (10 Gbps) enclosure: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
You have a couple options. You can definitely get an external enclosure like this one for $30-50 on a site like Amazon and then do a direct clone from one SSD to the other. What I did was to create an image of the SSD onto an external hard drive and then restore it to the new SSD and adjust the partition to take advantage of the expanded space.
Whichever route you take, Clonezilla is the tool I used and it works great for either creating a disk image or copying between drives directly.
Thanks, when I was thinking power supply I wasn't sure if it went
Wall, generic power cord, PSU (Box with fan like https://pcpartpicker.com/product/DmWrxr/evga-bq-600w-80-bronze-certified-semi-modular-atx-power-supply-110-bq-0600-k1), R43SG.
Or Wall, power cord, dell box, R43SG.
I'll end up buying the R43SG, M2 to thunderbolt (Amazon Link), the adapter you provided, and the video card. I'll wait a bit for my wallet to recover before getting the thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter for $44.
Here is m.2 NVME USB enclosure: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MNFH1PX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And here is M.2 SATA: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MKCG5ZG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You can clone the SSD without another computer, but you'd need to get an external enclosure with NVME PCIe support like https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=nvme+adapter&qid=1601560923&sr=8-3
Then you could put the empty new SSD into that enclosure and either use a bootable Linux usb thumbdrive or some windows-based cloning software to copy the data over. Then take the new SSD out of the enclosure, into the laptop and it should boot just like before.
Taking the SSD out does not delete the data. Just try to not touch any of the metal bits and make sure you discharge yourself before opening the laptop.
Only thing I could find was one that lets you plug it into a usb port. https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/
No.
You need an nvme enclosure. I've have no experience with this one, but something like this should work. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ao6rFbZFM4AHH
Another option would be to keep the enclosure you listed and change the drive to something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078C515QL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Yq6rFb7XQ94DY
looks like it is NVME, so could it be done with an NVME adapter like this?

well if you got a MacBook Air Retina yes you're stuck with a soldered on storage, no way to upgrade it. However, you can buy an NVMe enclosure, pretty cheap on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=sr_1_3?crid=292J05MDIOTHW&dchild=1&keywords=nvme+enclosure&qid=1598895366&sprefix=nvme+%2Caps%2C184&sr=8-3, pop in an NVMe drive, or a USB-C or Thunderbolt external SSD (Thunderbolt ones are more expensive, but I don't think you need that blazing fast speed of Thunderbolt), install macOS onto that one, then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Migration Assistant to move your user over. Then when you boot the laptop, hold down Option to select the boot disk to be the external one. Or you can go to System Preferences and set the default boot disk to the external one, no need to hold Option everytime.
External drives are a very basic technology and you don't want to overpay for one. It's basically just a drive and a case with an interface. If you buy the case separately, installing the drive takes all of two minutes - it is really easy. I always recommend this approach since you can easily upgrade or change drives.
However some manufacturers actually make this decision a little harder by making their external drives cheaper than their internal drives. If you do decide you want an external then try this Toms Hardware article which was just updated a few days ago.
Personally I think USB 3.1 is still is the right answer for most people, like look at this m.2 SSD / USB enclosure from Amazon that gets 800 mb/sec in testing. Actually even SATA3 / USB 3.1 isn't that far behind - you should get 500+ mb/sec. You can back up 300GB in 10 mins with a setup like that.
When you go to Thunderbolt (which uses the same USB-C connector nowadays) you can't just buy on specs. There are Thunderbolt external SSDs that only go up to 900-1000 mb/sec which IMO isn't all that much better than USB 3.1 and not really worth the price premium. But with the right case and right drive, yes you should be able to hit 2000 or 2500 mb/sec which is pretty amazing. Unfortunately I don't have any specific recommendations for that, as USB 3.1 is working for me. Here is an example of a product I wouldn't recommend - it meets all of the specs but in the reviews you can see that it tops out at 900mb/sec.
Yeah, it's just a NVMe SSD enclosure. Like this:
https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
If you're looking for a USB stick with SSD speeds there's the Corsair Voyager GTX. I have 3 of these and used them as bootable Linux/Ubuntu OS drives. I would be concerned about the longevity of the drive for video editing though. The refurbs used to always go on sale (for around $33). https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Flash-Voyager-128GB-Premium/dp/B079NVJPKV
I agree with u/AnemographicSerial that the NVMe SSD with enclosure would be a better option since you can always upgrade in the future.
Yes, I am sorry did not checked before hand. Only has a U.2 adpater which is not useful. You can however, convert to a USB3.0: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=nvme+to+sata+adapter&pd_rd_r=30b90928-5930-43f7-8ccc-661275d1b9eb&pd_rd_w=imglN&pd_rd_wg=59ld7&pf_rd_p=40a9039f-51eb-4146-81bc-7c99576627d3&pf_rd_r=164R6CAKH8AR7P6TR64W&qid=1568958944&sr=8-7
I was thinking about using an enclosure like this for an NVME ssd.
I also found something else interesting though, but it's sketchy at best.
I could connect the above enclosure internally using a usb-c to sata adapter and then connecting a male to male sata connecter to that. That would enable me to use the sata cables in the PC to connect it. I already have a usb-c to sata cable lying around, so the only added cost would be the male to male sata cable. If it didn't work I could just fallback to the enclosure and use it via usb 3.0. I'm pretty skeptical that it would even work though, I'd be surprised if it did.
EDIT: Had to fix links to remove referrals, didn't even know that was a default thing with amazon
Yeah, an enclosure is generally just an adapter that turns a drive into a USB external one. You don't necessarily need an enclosure, you can just get a USB adapter, but the purpose is so that you can copy all files from your current drive to the new one. Here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nYiWCb6SKSHQT
Ideally your laptop has more than one slot and you won't ever have to deal with this.
Tl;Dr : Stay away from used/referb. Most any hdd aside from Toshiba (often doa) is great at mass storage. Ssds are fast and efficient on power with super fast speeds and basically all of them are good. Just keep an eye on reviews for the most part. If warranty is a factor to you pick Samsung/seagate.
Here's the long answer:
In terms of drives, if you have a 2.5" bay then a hard disk drive or hdd would give you the most storage per dollar but at a much lower speed. You already have a fast drive to boot on so you'll only notice a difference for anything you put on it. I've seen a lot of DOA drives from Toshiba. I've also noticed that often times for hdd's they are cheaper purchasing external ones and seagate in particular (Only seagate!) you can remove the drive from an external one and pop it into an internal slot. Good brands are Western Digital, Seagate, and HGST. Those are probably going to be the only companies you see anyway for hdds.
For solid state drives or SSD you get much faster and efficient performance and they can even come in 2.5" size, M.2 sata, and nvme. You'll want the nvme and luckily for you those are the fastest but generally 10-20% more expensive. Nearly all ssds perform within 15% of each other and ssds are generally pretty safe. If you want to pay close attention you can look out for which ever ssds have the least layering. When ssds have multiple layers it increases storage for cheaper but at a reduced life (we're still taking petabytes of use and averages of over 5yrs), but not extremely important just can be considered. Good brands are Crucial, Samsung (seagate), Adata, Sandisk, Western digital, and I think PNY has been doing better.
Also definitely stay away from used/referb drives. They will have their life span directly effected by use and may not live long.
There's not really much to suggest because there's so much out there but that's just a few pointers. Generally speaking ssds are great for booting and putting frequent things you access while hdds are great for mass storage like movies and giant games such as GTA5. However if you have the money, there's not a reason to stop you from wanting to have more ssds.
The last thing to mention is that if there are multiple drives you can use, and they are the same size, and ideally same model, you can use RAID. But I'll let you research that up if you want.
