My wife's focus in her undergrad was pre-Civil War era, so I really should have been reading more of her books. I think she owns American Apartheid, I'll have to double check. She also got me Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi to read after I'm done with Foner.
Early American protestants had at least three ideas on how/why most Africans are so dark:
1]they were a separate creation [polygenetic]
2]They became that way from the curse after Noah/Adam
3]The hot environment changed their skin and if they stay in northern latitudes they will lighten up automatically [a non religious explanation for "scientific" racists].
All this is in the book Stamped From the Beginning. It is really emotionally hard reading.

I'll take this one. "Hating America" can mean many things, but it definitely includes requiring public high school students read this tripe as it were fact, rather than a vile compendium of half-truths and erroneous logic. A first year college student could pick it apart, so they shove it in at high school level - pretty much the definition of indoctrination.
Most pure white peoples support BLM. it is the white middle class that is the reactionaries, Trying to defend the de facto apartheid society they’ve benefited from since america’s founding. It’s going to take a lot to undo that. Race has been used to divide the working class here since they invented whiteness. Ibram Kendi's Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America is an absolute must, and just came out in a relatively inexpensive paperback edition. Could very easily be your 'core text', and contains excellent footnotes and references to other books and possible topics of discussion. Starts with the beginning of America (many of the ideas come from far before that) and goes all the way up to the present, and does an excellent job of covering a variety of related topics like class and gender. It's almost impressive how consistent he is in finding and condemning racism, even in contexts where we are often more forgiving of racist ideas, by showing there have always been counterexamples to racist ideas, and how racism really is a groundless fabrication. Absolutely excellent. Also perhaps consider:
Carol Anderson - White Rage: The Unspoken Truth About Our Racial Divide Admittedly it covers a lot of the same territory as stamped and with less scope or detail, but an interesting look at white backlashes against black emancipation and progress.
Todd Green - The Fear of Islam: An Introduction to Islamophobia in the West Fairly accessible and well-written discussion of how Islamophobia works.

Another rabbit hole I didn't know I hadn't been down...
I grew up in Provo and went to Timpanogos Elementary. Home of the Indians! (Not anymore - they're the Tigers now, and the Timpanogos Indians have gone down the memory hole). The school sits across the street from North Park, where they moved the actual Fort Utah (the structure). We used to have activities in that park all the time, including a huge "Mountain Man Rendezvous" every year). They built a water park there.
Reading the story of how the native people were treated when the Mormon settlers arrived was horrible, and sad, and completely unsurprising. And we damn sure weren't taught the actual history.
Side note: read Ibram X. Kendi's Stamped from the Beginning, the part that covers the genocide of native peoples as the U.S. swept westward. Lots of similar tactics were employed - "we promise we'll never ask you to leave your land!", "think of how much better your life will be if you give us your land, and let us trade with you!", etc.
White supremacy and white innocence run DEEP in TSCC...
there are books that explain it.
read this and then you wont be so judgmental to racists but can talk to them so they listen.
When I looked on Amazon, I got two "Stamped" books by Kendi.
One is "Stamped from the Beginning" https://www.amazon.com/dp/1568585985/ref=emc_b_5_i
the only author is Kendi.
The other is "Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You: A Remix ..."
https://www.amazon.com/Stamped-Antiracism-National-Award-winning-Beginning/dp/0316453692
and there are two authors, Reynolds and Kendi.
I'm thinking your school used the second? Based on the reviews, it looks like its target audience is teens.
because white supremacy is a hell of a drug.

If you are interested in learning more about the history of racism in the US, is highly recommend Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendo. (Sorry for the Amazon links - just the easiest to show the book.) I've been listening to it and his How to be an Anti-Racist on audiobook - fascinating and disturbing and very educational.
> It's hard-wired into our DNA to an extent.
Got some sources on that? American racism is 100% manufactured. Here's some reading on the subject if you'd like to know more.
well for people who have to rely on using generalizations to maintain their safety, assuming white people are not on our side as people who hate the police helps keep us safe. and whiteness was specifically constructed out of various european identities to create a caste system in America, I'm sorry that such a history leads people to view the beneficiaries of that system with suspicion when it comes to standing up against injustice, but that it the way it is. If you know what side you are on, it shouldn't bother you. maybe you should learn more about the history of whiteness: https://www.amazon.com/Stamped-Beginning-Definitive-History-National/dp/1568585985

I'm glad we are on the same side and united in the fight to end end systemic racism and the caste society we live in. fight on.
