Neat, but I just use Stanley Removable Compartment Organizers. Handy because they stack right on top of each other, and you can move the bins around to fit your needs. I use them for a lot of different games.

10 compartment for big stuff, 25 compartment for cards and tokens, or smaller miniatures like x-wing.
I bought this case from Amazon and I'm going to get some foam like you have to line in. Fairly cheap and really good for carrying stuff.

I use Stanley 014725 25-Removable Compartment Professional Organizer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ANkeFbM8S73NN or knock off brands. I had all my stuff split by models, bases and tokens. Now organizing that you just pull a container and get model base cards and tokens in a yellow container.
Well I used to store everything in a drawer, individually zip-bagged, then the drawer become full. I'm now using modulable organizers bought at my local hardware store similar to these ones
Once you start buying... Anything else, I would pick up 1 or 2 of these bad boys. https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF
I'm not a pro xwing player, but the storage is so danged convenient. In some ways, it enables me even more because there are bins that "need to be filled."
Happy to hear of another new player!
I use these Stanely 25 compartment cases: https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF
To protect the ships a little more, I either line the compartments with craft foam, or use extra foam from pick and pluck. It manage to keep my ship pretty secure even while moving, or if I flip the case upside down. I really like the modularity, and the combo of a rigid shell + foam.
I also use the 10 compartment ones for larger ships (and eventually, Armada).
Edit: the 25 bin ones are much cheaper ordered via Home Depot. For some ships, I also re-use the original plastic and just trim it down to fit a compartment.
So I can't stop promoting this box: https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497653887&sr=8-1&keywords=stanley+25+compartment+organizer
It is the perfect size to hold everything you need for a game, plus two small-ship lists + the cards/bases/everything you need. I always sleeve my cards, so what I usually do is prior to heading to play, I create my list, and place the upgrade cards along with the pilot sleeve. That way I can quickly pull them out and set them up.
TLDR: have a "go box" that has the tokens/stuff you need to play + 1-2 lists' worth of cards/ships.
i would recomend a smaller one like this and then fizzle up some cotton (cheap from drugstores) in the compartments so the minis don't have space to fall around. You should have enough space at least for the minis of this session ;) https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=pd_bxgy_469_img_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00005QWYF&pd_rd_r=JQA0DB4GFYMKVADN44SG&pd_rd_w=eENgO&pd_rd_wg=YS3wv&psc=1&refRID=JQA...
Stand? Nah, I've got all of Waves 1-7 packed across four of these babies. It's convenient for storage, and it makes the toys a lot easier to carry from place to place, which is starting to happen with some level of frequency. I just barely managed to fit every figure and vehicle I would need to use any ability and access any level or world into a single box, and set the other three to the side. Hopefully there'll be enough room left for a few Wave 7.5 characters when that rolls around.
I am 100% convinced that these are the best storage and organizational containers for LEGO.

They have a deeper version too and you will need more of those than you think.
I'm currently using 8 shallow and 1 deep. I need to but 1-2 mor shallow and at least 2 more deep. They stack really well too.
I use this Stanley organizer: https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=pd_yo_rr_bia_t_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=XXZR73DK5FA42671GG9D
In it I've got:
It could easily store things like bases and dials, I just simply keep those in my foam.
It works really well, the large compartments are perfectly sized for pilot cards, and the medium ones are great for upgrade cards. The smallest ones are good for holding tokens and dice. I'd highly recommend it, and the great part is it's relatively inexpensive and you can always just pick up a second when/if your collection grows!
I already have my boxes (these ones $11 from Amazon) or I'd give the ones from the OP a try. Five bucks is hard to pass up and I feel these minis are a bit fragile for me to want to transport with pegs inserted anyway.
I just ordered 2 of these to see how they work out.
You are right though, a normal old Plano tacklebox is hard to beat.
Instead of Plano tackle boxes, I'd suggest these instead:
I've found that when looking for small Lego pieces, you want them in containers that are shallow and wide. Much easier to search for items that way. I use the above container in my garage for various stuff and I have since started using them for my Lego collection as well. The clear top is awesome as well.
These are great, since they are made by you but I no longer store small parts in "open" containers for obvious reasons (friends, kids, yourself bumping into them or kicking them over or knocking them off the table).
Instead I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430548450&sr=8-1&keywords=stanley+organizer
Decent price for compartment organization. Plus you can store them many different ways (stacked, shelves, etc.). One of my larger 10 bin organizers is completely full of McFeely's Square Drive Screws with no issues. Just my .2 cents but nice video anyways.
I don't have all the expansions (5 I think?) but this works pretty damn perfectly for all the tokens and small cards. Not exactly what you're looking for though.

That first link is in Ireland - I'm honestly surprised Tactix is sold elsewhere, I thought it was a 'homebrand' type thing for Bunnings.
The second link I'd say isn't individual bins, in my searching around before settling on the Tactix containers, I found that if it has bins it says as much. That one advertises as dividers, which are just the removable walls rather than bins.
You could try this 25-bin Stanley organizer which is roughly the same price. I think Dewalt also have a bunch that'd be suitable.
Yes Yes Yes. I just organized some bricks etc. into 4 of these.
Another tip. Don't use standard tackle boxes or parts boxes. Be sure to use organizers that have the compartments that are removable. I have spent a lot of time trying to find a specific color in a bin that I could not dump out. Something like this... http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3FAWEZ7Y7T33W&coliid=I2SDAW2LPN6EUW
Was it something like this??
As for me, I was using what /u/Nybear21 suggested, but have outgrown it for two reasons:
I still highly recommend that tacklebox or something that supports the Plano 3700 series of boxes (the 1374 was the gold standard while it was made, to the point that the top reviews on Amazon were all about X-wing).
As for what I currently use, I bought a bulk of literature mailers (10x10x2 corrugated cardboard) and put those microhangers/gearboxes in there in a stack. The epics are on shelves in display that I carry in their original plastic when I transport them to the store.
like I mentioned earlier, if you can't find any hard copies of the Boxes you can get the PDF version and print them as needed.
The actual real product is fairly nice quality though, so you won't be disappointed if you do invest in it.
The NPC Codex Box and Bestiary I Box will be the two you'll get the most use out of.
This Toolbox fits the pawns almost perfectly. The Amazon Brand box looks like it's almost identical, but i have not tried it.
Stanley has a few different versions of these totes: https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=pd_sim_469_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00005QWYF&pd_rd_r=72a5742f-c4f4-11e8-b774-b318503a9aad&pd_rd_w=nyGVu&pd_rd_wg=N8UbC&pf_rd_i=d...
that are 16.5"+/- wide, 13+ deep. Two available depths. The cups inside stay put if one of their neighbors is missing, and stuff doesn't spill out (surface-mount resistors are a possible exception.)
I think they would fit snugly in a thin-foam-lined rack drawer like this one: https://hermanproav.com/product/4017/Middle-Atlantic-Two-Space-Rack-Drawer
Deeper drawers likely available too. Putting rackmount slides directly on the case itself might be fruitful, too.
Pillboxes like this: https://www.4imprint.com/sampleitem/105658?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlr2er9Lj3QIVVLjACh114QapEAQYASABEgLAGvD_BwE&mkid=1pla-s105658&ef_id=W7E8YgAAAIb4vfzA:20180930211306:s could handle the really tiny stuff, like those surface mount components and MacBook Pro bottom panel screws. Can't beat that vendor's price for a single unit, too...
Look also at fishing tackle boxes, model railroad parts organizers, etc.
(No association with any of the links...)
I use the 10 compartment for my decks but I think the professor did a video on these.

If you want something portable and easily stackable, I have a couple of these:
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00005QWYF
For actual drawers permanently mountable, you may want something like this:
Also worth considering stanley storage boxes.
Stanley 014725 25-Removable Compartment Professional Organizer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005QWYF?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
These work great for storing the pawns
Here, take a look.
For my ships, I use Stanley organizer boxes, mostly https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005QWYF/ for small and large ships and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001G1CUK0/ for epic ships and a few of the bigger large ones such as the Decimator.
You need these:
Stanley 014725 25-Removable Compartment Professional Organizer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9eRRxb1TVZBJC
They are absolutely fantastic for sorting and building Lego. They con in a deep version too.
I strongly prefer these. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005QWYF/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 They have the removable bins that Adam Savage goes crazy over.
http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/ is also pretty nice, since you can carry all of your items around with you and save trips.
Is this the one you have? http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF
The top 8 are this model: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005QWYF And the bottom 3 are this model: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001G1CUK0
80/20 is great stuff, I would use it a lot more if it wasn't so pricey.
Come over to the dark side: http://i.imgur.com/uctz871.jpg (i.e., it won't fit in the box)

A great question that I find myself searching for on this subreddit every month or so. My third box is in the mail right now so it's ever pressing.
This thread has what looks like the best solution to me. Just ordered a couple of these about five minutes ago.
Link to my recent suggestion (a post in a similar thread on Reddit, and the discussion that followed) and a link to the Amazon.com product.
I'm not sure it's exactly what you're after (there are pictures if you follow the first link far enough), and it's a bit difficult to fit large ships in (it fits them all, but the Lambda is incredibly tight and won't fit into one of the trays, forcing their removal). I keep my movement templates along the back, having removed trays for them and range rulers slot either between rows, or along the length of the bottom (again, more trays removed).
TIEs specifically fit into the small trays almost perfectly (you could even say it's a little tight - they don't move if you give them a shake, but almost no effort/force is required to insert them, and some of my TIE models will slip around, so it's about as close to "perfect" as I would imagine anything could be), and they're well sized for your tokens (e.g. all of my focus tokens in one of the small trays, the stress in another, etc. Target Locks are split across two to make them easier to sort through, rather than one big one, and my shield tokens are almost overflowing a single small container at this point.
The only problem (aside from large ships that aren't the Firespray/YT-2400 generally needing the trays removing) is that the movement dials are just a few mm too tall when put on their side, and none of the trays stack them vertically well. Again, strategic removal of trays works, and the lid keeps them from wobbling about (so it actually works fairly well).
As far as tournaments go, where you only really want 2-8 ships, dials and tokens (etc), I'd consider something even smaller. If you want a general purpose storage box that could also work for tournaments, I'd say this one looks like it might fit the bill.
Interesting. for reference, I have 15-20 thousand pieces, and I'm only now considering sorting to be worthwhile. I'm sorting my most common pieces by type (all colors of 1x2 plates in one compartment) and other types in mixed categories (all 1xN slopes in one compartment (1x2, 1x3, 1x4 all together). I'm using these (several of each):
http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/
http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B001G1CUK0/
But with under 5K parts, I'd recommend just sorting by size, as I mentioned before, maybe into something like this, with one drawer for each size:
http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-20738006-3-Drawer-Organizer-See-Through/dp/B002BA5F6Q/
Hope that helps!
Don't bother with the trays, cases, or even foam: these are the best things I've found for hauling around Xwing stuff: http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF?ie=UTF8&keywords=stanley%2025&qid=1459879090&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 The pluck foam looks like a good idea, but ends up being a pain in the ass. The Stanley case can hold all your ships, tokens, cards, etc. for a tournament. I've bought 1x per faction, and an additional one for everything else. At 11 bucks, it's a great deal and they keep your stuff well protected.
I have some from Stanley, I believe they are these, I bought them used so I'm not sure if they are the exact same.
