they are good for bulk storage of upgrade cards. you can fit 3 cards in each pocket pretty well. 4 becomes to lose and they fall out easily.
Welcome to Gloomhaven! There’s definitely more to GH than JotL, but honestly having played both, I prefer GH and think you can streamline the gameplay. Here’s some suggestions....
THE APP
As others have said, use the GH Helper app. You can use it on any device, so if the phone screen is too small, go for a tablet or laptop.
Also, this is going to sound silly, but if you are using a phone for GH Helper, I love using a “lazy” phone holder to keep my app at eye-level. It was legit hurting my neck to have to constantly crane my head and look down at the app. I got mine cheap on SHEIN, I have this one: “Lazy” Phone Holder
MONSTER TURNS
To divide and conquer on monster turns, we do this: - Person A focuses 100% on the board; they have a good understanding of monster movement. - Person B focuses 100% on the app; they are attentive to shield and/or poison, which impact attacks.
In practice, it looks like this: 1. Person B calls out a single monster type, #, and ability (e.g. “Snake 1 move 5 with jump into melee” or “Archer 5 move 2 range 4”). 2. Person A moves that monster appropriately, and calls out its target (“hits Mindthief” or “can’t hit anyone”). 3. If the monster is hitting, Person B pulls the monster modifier in the app, calls out the final result (“4 damage” or “crit miss” etc) and Person B updates the app. Repeat 1-3 for every monster. It looks like a long “script” written out here, but it’s actually pretty fast when you get in a rhythm. With this method we get through monster turns pretty quick.
As for how do you broach this topic with your wife... I always vote for honesty and frankness. “I was a bit bored/tired doing that scenario, seemed like you were too. I read a bit on reddit and people suggested ______, maybe we should try it....” etc. GH and JotL are all about being a team, so you can always lean back on that when you’re talking to her about it.
ORGANIZATION
The “fiddly bits” of GH definitely need to be organized, so good you’re doing that. I also recommend removing all the components you don’t need - I put all the extras in a simple “photo” box that sits on our game shelf. Between GH and JotL I have an entire photo box full of unnecessary pieces! Getting them out of the way makes everything so much easier.
Get an expanding file organizer for the map tiles, trust me, it’s a godsend.
Get a binder + card holder inserts for your marketplace. There’s WAY more items in GH v. JotL and having them in a binder you can just flip through in insanely helpful and makes the game feel less clunky. These card holder inserts are perfect for holding the marketplace items (even if the cards are sleeved!)
PHEW.... that got a bit more long-winded than I intended. Hope you found it helpful! Feel free to ask about anything I mentioned, happy to go into more detail as needed. Happy dungeon’ing!
Yup!
Although the same seller has a 20-pack (instead of the 25-pack that you listed) for a few bucks less. This is exactly what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTYD2BI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
