They set out to destroy Luke Skywalker's character from the beginning and wanted to replace him. Notice that the new EU acts as if there would have been a golden age/paradise if Leia was trained instead of Luke. The writer of this article now works for Disney and was given a book to publish by Disney and has had articles featured on starwars.com
