I just went through this replacing the front band on my 1903a3. Save yourself the trouble and buy a good quality punch that's the proper size for the front sight blade. If you get more milsurps a quality punch set will come in handy, I have the same punches also in 3/32" and 1/8".
Yeah I actually have those inserts also, just took them out for the photo. Removing the pins isn't hard, especially those ones weren't that bad. If you have a pin punch (this one is the one I have and is perfect for pin removal), but if this is the only pin you plan on removing, a nail would probly be ok. It's a lot easier since you also know which way the pin is since I did it already haha. (I have my YOTH MP-10 in pieces right now b/c I started hitting the pin in the wrong way, and now it's a pain in the ass).
So yeah, it's not hard, just put the wrist on something soft but firm, and hit it a few times. Once you have the scored end of the pin out of the wrist, it should just come out if you grab it with pliers and pull.
No problem, using that I was able to get started. I haven't done much, but I have a much better knowledge of the process and have the tools to do what I want. As a specific recommendation, I bought this pin punch for removing TF's pins on Amazon and it works great.
