The easiest way to do that is with a serial connection. You cannot use that serial cable as it is passive. You need a serial port on your computer or a usb adapter. Like this

And use putty or realterm to access the switch

The ones we have a lot of at work (these, or very similar) inexplicably take 20 seconds to start working after plugging in on all our Linux boxes, the Startech one is instant. It's got about the right length of cable for what I want too, doesn't take up too much laptop bag space.
I've not tried it on any other OS so can't comment there sorry.
