I have one of these installed in the top 1U of mine, which I place my desktop on (mine rack is sitting next to my desk). It does take up 1U of space, but is very solid. https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Server-Rack-Shelf-Adjustable/dp/B0013KCLQC/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?keywords=1u+shelf&qid=1661373486&sr=8-16
How sure are you the 35” isn’t from door to door, with the rack posts being, say, 33.25” ?
“Full depth” rails are considered 33 1/4, and often the posts are adjustable to less as well.
That said, I’ve used this shelf to hold a stack of NAS, and another to hold a pair of those Cyberpower 2U UPSs:

You totally can, though cost-wise, rails may actually be less expensive depending on the shelf and rails. They're called 4-post shelves, since they attach to all four posts of the server rack.
I used tape for over a year with a hanging v-style plotter. I am so happy to leave that behind with axidraw and use magnets.
I got a used server shelf like this one: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Server-Rack-Shelf-Adjustable/dp/B0013KCLQC/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=server+shelf&qid=1606237903&sr=8-7 and bolted my axidraw to it.
Initially I taped down 12x18 thick paper to shelf and used inkscape to draw a graph paper type grid. Then, I align canvass to that grid and secure with magnets.
I have since replaced my drawn grid with an A3 cutting mat because it looks cooler, but the main thing is the magnet setup rocks.
This shelf on amazon is really strong, and sturdy, but the racknuts it came with aren't great, or I'm terrible at installing them. I've ordered some Rackstuds from amazon to replace them.
how much does it weigh? I've got 3x cyberpower desktop UPSs on a rackmount shelf that supports 175lbs.
You could mount a shelf and place the switch on it instead of mounting the switch. Like this sort of idea - https://tinyurl.com/5hmt345j
That one is kind of expensive, but you get the idea and can search for a different one if you want.
I've used these, they worked well.
