Yes it exists. Search for "Thunderbolt 2 adapter"
You won't find a Thunderbolt 2 to 4 adapter because v4 is the same as v3 with some extra handshaking. It is backwards compatible so a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter on a v4 port should work.
I would highly recommend to get a device with TB3 instead of USB-C 3.1 because of the full bandwith capabilities. With TB3 you enable for example the usage of a fully functioning eGPU if you ever have the need for it. you can Try the startech adaptor https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Thunderbolt-Adapter-DisplayPort-TBT3TBTADAP/dp/B019FPJDQ2 which presonus also recommends for theyre interfaces with tb2.
I don't understand why you wouldn't just do a Thunderbolt 2 to USB A Female, then plug a USB A to USB C Cable into the port. Done. Whats wrong with that setup.
You might be thinking you could use this but you can not. Because Thunderbolt 2 does NOT carry USB.
Thunderbolt 3 is a SUPERSET of USBC with USB 3.1. Meaning that it's a USB port, that can SWITCH to Thunderbolt 3. If you convert Thunderbolt 2, to Thunderbolt 3 (which happens to be a USBC port) that USBC port will NOT carry USB. It will simply be a USBC version of Thunderbolt 2.
But here you go, they DO WORK BOTH WAYS. But it won't work for USB devices. ONLY Thunderbolt devices.
Sounds like you need an adapter as you said yourself.
Something like this. Hopefully you can find something less pricey though. http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Thunderbolt-USB-C-Adapter-TBT3TBTADAP/dp/B019FPJDQ2/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1454183099&sr=1-1&keywords=thunderbolt+to+usb-c+adapter
Unless you can find a Thunderbolt to USB-C cable
You're in luck! You're very fortunate that you chose a laptop with a Thunderbolt 3 port, otherwise the display would otherwise not work, as the Apple TB displays do not work on DisplayPort, despite being theoretically possible. There's six pages of discussion about this very issue in an Apple support thread here.
This is what you need on Amazon, then you should be good. Good luck!
No, I didn't do anything special, which was amazing because with the old system I had, I used to have to light candles and sacrifice a lamb. That one was using a USB-C port on the PC side, it didn't have dedicated Thunderbolt ports. And I still had to unplug it and plug it back in every time I turned the system on before it would recognized the MOTUs.
This new one worked fine, and only once or twice glitched and required a restart to get the units to be recognized. That was a huge improvement. I'm going to get a new cable just to be sure.
Oh, on the TB2 -> TB4, I am using a Startech converter device, which I should have mentioned. So maybe what you heard was true. The two old style DP ports on my thunderbolt board, I think, are only for TB2 video devices.

Apple's won't work.
This one will, but not cheap

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Thunderbolt-Adapter-DisplayPort-TBT3TBTADAP/dp/B019FPJDQ2 here ya go, it was 120 on their website but I guess amazon sells it for cheaper somehow.
I meant the apple thunderbolt: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Thunderbolt_Display. I found some messages on askubuntu and amazon from people that say they did it. See this https://askubuntu.com/questions/1036356/apple-thunderbolt-display-as-2nd-monitor and this: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Thunderbolt-Adapter-Macbook-Compatible/dp/B019FPJDQ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1530571335&sr=8-1&keywords=startech+tbt3tbtadap (search the answers for apple).

Found this on Amazon so they seem to exist, but obviously not in as ready supply as one that connects tb2 to a tb3 port
Apple has one for $50, but it has a 2-star rating with 2 negative reviews. For $25 or so more, this one has many more positive reviews.

Good luck to you!
Since this isnt' my main work machine but my side-project/homestudio/gaming rig I haven't really worked on it much so far. Also I didn't get around to installing NI Komplete yet, so I couldn't try old projects yet.
But I did a few tests and it seemed to work fine. RAM doesn't show up in the performance monitor anymore. Well...

The connection appears to be stable so far. Sometimes it doesn't connect on startup, unplugging the thunderbolt adapter and plugging it in again usually works. Or a reboot.
Best of luck!
First off: I do/did also have the reboot problem. Yesterday I set the "fix shutdown" flag in Clover Configurator and I haven't experienced it since. Might be a coincidence but worth a try.
I use this adapter: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Thunderbolt-Adapter-Windows-USB-C/dp/B019FPJDQ2

It annoys me a little bit, but I haven't gotten around to really get to the bottom of it.
I'm curious, which firewire card are you using? How is your overall experience with it?
EDIT: Copy and paste is hard.
This just started shipping.
You're correct about the speeds.
Wow, thanks for that super detailed response.
I've found this other display, the Acer H277HU that uses USB-C 3.1. I figure that this port, like Thunderbolt, would be my one cable solution. However, I can't seem to find a TB to TB3/USB-C adapter, or at least one that explicitly works in that direction.
Does it look like that would work? Or am I stuck with a multi-cable set up for the time being unless I splurge for the Apple TB display?
