There's functionally nothing different between eSATA and SATA. It's the exact same connector. Exact same cables. Exact same controllers.
So in essence you could take the (4) internal SATA ports and run cables to a 4-port eSATA backplane and then mount up to 32 drives or more externally.
These are what I ordered back in 2020 but it looks like they're no longer available any more but there are other vendors. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MN4CY1Y/ref=twister_B01MYBGV5V
I have the RAID features disabled and are using them as just a disk enclosure.
We have a few of those. We were looking at things more like this. I was hoping someone might have a recommendation on something similar that they have used before.
The Istar is eSata so you will need a converter for that DAS, Though they may sell a Thunderbolt native one like the LaCie. This one has USB 3.0
I was mostly looking at this guy here. I like the room it offers for expansion. Right now the spares I have are: 2x 1TB WD blacks (likely new), a brand new 3TB WD red, and a 2TB hatachi I think. Probably can find more too.
My server is currently in a Corsair 300R case. I don't know at the moment what my available power situation is, but the board has 6 SATA with 4 in use. This case isn't the best for cable management, and it is getting kinda tight in there.
I'm hesitant to go to commercial items because of my lack of knowledge of all that. Could you recommend some DAS gear?
