I would ask a comment on the amazon pages for products like these:
As far as I can tell, it looks like the usb-c is supposed to plugin to the mac and the display port is supposed to plug into the monitor, but it might work the other way around too.
So I am trying on an LG 27GN950.
Startech DisplayPort to USB-C (https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-USB-DisplayPort-Cable-CDP2DPMM1MB/dp/B01E9RTEI8) which only gives me 60hz at any resolution. I use the same cable on my Dell S2719dgf and get 2560x1440p (monitor's max resolution) at 144hz. If I tell my LG it's a DP 1.4 cable, it gives me the option of HDR. If I tell the monitor it's 1.2, I lose the HDR option.
Curiously enough I just realized it's a DisplayPort 1.2 cable. I will order and try: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-USB-C-Supporting/dp/B01J6DT070/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=displayport+usb+c+1.4&qid=1603084003&s=electronics&sr=1-3
I also tried HDMI to USB-C (https://www.amazon.com/uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-Surface/dp/B075V5JK36/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-p13n1_0?cv_ct_cx=hdmi+usb-c&dchild=1&keywords=hdmi+usb-c&pd_rd_i=B075V5JK36&pd_rd_r=655478a2-e9e9-4e44-9cd6-c6d59c5865ef&pd_rd_w=XKb3r&pd_rd_wg=JqnQQ&pf_rd_p=aa27be45-7294-48a8-8c11-546cebd55a37&pf_rd_r=DCXYBKK2RC00TKJARZ70&psc=1&qid=1603084564&sr=1-1-a14f3e51-9e3d-4cb5-bc68-d89d95c82244). Once again, my Dell accepted this and output 144hz at 1440p. The LG does not.
I have a feeling the LG monitor might not support, natively, a higher refresh rate on macOS. It's odd the Dell has accepted multiple cables without issue, but the LG won't. Even lowering the resolution doesn't help or give the option of higher refresh rate.
HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color is never an available option for me, and turning off adaptive sync doesn't help either.
Will report back when I try the 1.4 DP to USB-C, but I have a feeling it won't work :(

Pick up one of these. It will run 1080p and 1440p at 144hz.
I'm a fan of this USB-C to DisplayPort cable right now.
As long as your usb-c will output video (from my understanding some will and some won't) you should be able to get 144hz this method. Here is a link to an adapter in the questions section the manufacturer claims it will output 144hz.
