I'm a back sleeper and I'm trying to switch but constantly wake up on my back. I actually just bought this snore shirt that is supposed to help you sleep on your side. Basically, you stick a tennis ball on in the "back pocket" so it's too uncomfortable to sleep on. I'll let you know if it works.
Sleeping apart like this isn't new at all. My buddy's dad had his own bedroom complete with furniture while his mom slept in the master and that's just how they lived. And this was in the 1970s.
Of course, they always tell you that heavy snoring can be indicative of serious health issues. That's why there are so many sleep study labs coast to coast. You didn't specifically say--soI think he went? As you noted, being overweight is also a super common cause of snoring.
Hey, have you tried the tennis ball sewed to his shirt trick? The idea is to prevent them from sleeping on their back. You can do it yourself or even buy one premade on amazon (example here)
Don't want to scare you, but that same buddy's dad died of a heart attack in his sleep in his early 60s. He was the kind of guy with a barrel chest/belly and toothpick legs.
