I think the Streamlight Protac 2AA would be idea. Two AA's, tailswitch, great durability, always starts on high.
These are my plays on flashlights.
IMO this is the brightest flashlight you can get that runs on 2 AA batteries. I have 3 or 4. Can’t remember. I also like to buy this as a gift for others.

Winter Storm Xanto knocked our power out early Saturday morning and it just came on last night. We only had a couple cheap plastic flashlights and I was kicking myself for not having something better. Thanks for the opportunity!

Streamlight ProTac 2xAA
Pretty inexpensive and great build quality. I love the 3 modes of illumination. Pick up a pack of eneloop batteries and you'll never have to worry about battery shelf-life again.
Wow, a LOT of people are not reading your comment with requirements, lol.
One mode, long and narrow, AA or AAA? Here goes.
With those requirements you just can't beat the Streamlight Stylus Pro. One mode, 100 lumens, 2xAAA batreries. It's an EDC stalwart and they're virtually bulletproof reliable. People have been sweating by these things (and their 1xAAA counterpart the Microstream) for years.
Just to give you a couple more options, also consider the Streamlight Protac 2AA. It's bigger and brighter than the stylus pro. It comes by default with multiple modes but you can program it to be just high mode super easily (just tap the button 10 times and hold it) and you never have to worry about multiple modes again. 250 lumens from 2xAA. Streamlight also recently announced a new version of the Stylus Pro USB which has a built in battery and a micro usb port for charging. It's got two modes but they're super easy. Starts on low, just double tap for high, you pick it up in 10 seconds, super easy. If I wanted a super simple EDC pen light this would be my choice personally because I like USB recharging and I like a couple of modes.
Hope this helps!
Streamlight ProTac 100%. Tough, waterproof, small, great distance for seeing all the way to the back of an attic, and it’s like daylight bright. Only $35

Another capable penlight in Streamlight’s arsenal is the Protac Tactical LED Flashlight. Utilizing C4 LED technology, the Streamlight Protac delivers an incredibly-bright stream of light in three different modes: High beam, low beam, and strobe depending on your needs, while, much like the other penlights on this list, features and IPX7 rated anodized aluminum construction that renders it waterproof up to one meter for half an hour and impact resistant up to a fall of 2 meters.
Additional features include a rubber push-button tail switch for easily switching between momentary, variable intensity, and strobe modes, an unique head design that won’t roll on flat surfaces, and an unbreakable pocket clip. CHECK IT OUT
With over 15 years in the firefighting industry, we’ve spent a considerable amount of time living in a firehouse. The one penlight we’ve seen carried recently by the most firefighters and paramedics alike is the Streamlight Stylus Pro Penlight, and for good reason. Along with an IPX4 water and impact resistant machined aluminum alloy construction with a Type II MIL-Spec anodized finish, this rugged penlight outputs a super bright, consistently regulated 70 lumens and 630 candela of LED light.
Additional features include a USB rechargeable battery, integrated pocket clip, and a push button tail switch for either momentary of constant light operation. CHECK IT OUT
