If you can add two more dollars this flashlight is solid. Been carrying one for over two years.

I carry the Streamlight Microstream daily in the 5th/watch pocket of my jeans with a spare AAA battery. Buy one now before someone scratches the paint off of one to reveal that they are all actually Toyota Tacomas and the price for them goes up online! Seriously, mine is 7+ years old and has been knocked around like a pinball, spent the night submerged in boat bilge water, been through the laundry washer, ran over a time or two... all with a cracked glass. The light cuts out occasionally but a good whack against the ground (percussive maintenance), seems to get it to light up again. Best $20 I ever spent on a flashlight! I’m ready to replace mine but I can’t find another flashlight that is more powerful with the same small tiny compact size and I’d rather have the small tiny compact size.
There's an argument to be made that a less than lethal option can be beneficial because it gives you a tool to potentially stop someone who is a threat but not necessarily a deadly threat. Personally I don't.
Personally I advocate more for a small handheld flashlight. Ever go inside? Especially if there are no windows, useful if the power goes out or the light switch gets flipped. Also, bad things tend to happen at night, when it's dark. I like a WML, but if I'm trying to identify someone I don't necessarily want to point my gun at them. Seriously, a $20 investment that has so much utility. This is all you need, maybe splurge another $10 on one you can recharge with a microUSB. It's tiny, doesn't get in your way, and is useful in all sorts of scenarios.
Personally I think that if you carry a gun you should consider carrying a separate handheld light source. I'd hate to be in a scenario where I have a gun and something to point it at, but not enough light to tell if it's shoot or no shoot.
Such a great little light! These are ~$18 new with free Prime shipping on Amazon.
I thought I'd have no use for a dedicated pocket knife until I got one and carried it. I thought the same about flashlights until I bought and carried one.
Start out with something that's not a total POS so you won't hate it right a way, and if you see value, then upgrade. For me, I started out with a StreamLight MicroStream. I loved it and used it a long while until I convinced myself that it's damn handy having a light. As always YMMV, but I'm a believer now.
I cant express how much i love the tiny Streamlight Microstream for my everyday carry flashlight. It takes a single AAA battery and u can briefly bump the switch without having to fully depress it. Sorry, no magnet tho.

This one is what I recommend to anyone looking for a first edc flashlight. Takes regular old AAA batteries and can be clipped in your back pocket, small enough to never notice it.

I hate headlamps. I went into the flashlights sub (side note, had no idea there was a fucking flashlights sub on Reddit) and someone recommended this one. I clip it onto my hat at night. I love it. Small but powerful. Now that I'm usually in rural areas it's a must have.

I've been deep down this road before. Most are too fat or too weak for my needs. I stopped looking when I found the streamlight microstream.
Amazon has the Streamlight MicroStream for $16.99. It runs for 2.25 hours on one AAA battery. It has the cap button (momentary on/constant on) and the pocket clip doubles as a hat clip. It's a nice EDC torch for now, and backup for later.
love this little thing. Not too bright but works well. Has a click on or even a momentary hold, so u can hold the button without making any noise if thats super important. I remember being backstage on show nice lol.
I like the streamlight stuff. I have the one that does two AAAs but they make a single as well. Best part is that they are inexpensive. Streamlight 66318 MicroStream C4 LED Pen Light https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00143JZ08/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_vs9Hyb4ZWFJDR
Looks like you got a lot of suggestions for lights already but as a guy who has a very "light" edc setup, and doesn't like weight or bulk I recommend the Streamlight Microstream. By far my favorite and I carry it everywhere with me. So small, light weight and the battery life is actually surprisingly good. I've had it for almost 5 months now and never replaced the single AAA yet and I use it just about daily for short bursts. Worth checking out and the price is descent.

This flashlight is one I've carried on me for quite some time. Good brand, bright, great on batteries. I carry it every day for personal use and work, goes on the nightstand at the end of the day. I've dropped it from 40+ feet on top of machinery and besides some wear on the finish, it's good as new. I highly recommend it to everyone I can because of how light and convienient it is on top of being a solid flashlight.
I work both IFT and 911, and I bring the same gym bag to each.
Extra pens/pencils, 99 cent notepads, phone charger, portable battery pack, my lunchbox, contact lens case and solution, my glasses (just in case), Thomas Guide, extra uniform, underwear, socks, whatever book I'm currently reading, iPhone earbuds, Hydroflask and Gatorade on the side.
In my uniform and pants pockets I carry chapstick, eyedrops, one of the 99 cent notepads, a pen and pen/stylus combo for our tablets, a Streamlight Microstream, and a regular disposable penlight with pupil size gauge.
Stepping up a few dollars would put the Microstream in reach. It'll be even smaller, AAA sized, and be plenty to bright for a compact daily light.
I carry this everyday. streamlight micro
It sits next to my knife in front pocket and clips to my hat all the time. |I love this flashlight. It saves my ass all the time because of the reversing clip. Hands free use with (1) AAA battery.
It's an on/off light. No low, no high, no strobe settings. Thats another reason why I love this thing. I do not like multiple settings ti fumble around with, This thing just works.
Go with a streamlight setup. I use this at work:
It has survived the washing machine about 10 times now and still works great even if the finish is dulling out a bit.
The only flashlight she will ever need at work is that one, as long as it doesn't get lost.
The leatherman website says: Internal Capacity: 4" x 1.4" x .8".
However, The 'related products' from the light you suggested produced a smaller version that i actually think is a perfect size.
Basically, I want something similar in size to the Space-Pen i have on the other side. Obviously a torch will be thicker and a bit bigger. But roughly that size fits the sheath very well.
I've been lurking the sub for about two months. I was looking through all the top EDC posts and I haven't been this impressed with an EDC for a while.
The pictures are beautiful along with those awesome descriptions for each picture.
From the knife to the flashlight, it's completely amazing.
One question, is this the flashlight in the album or is it another?
^^^^^I'm ^^^^^very ^^^^^jealous ^^^^^and ^^^^^where's ^^^^^your ^^^^^wallet?
I do not like the clip on the g19. I had one and I don't anymore because the clip came off. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00143JZ08 is what I would go with for a single AAA light but I personally use a 2xAA light for longer run time and brighter lights.
Just barely longer than the Solitaire and a bit fatter is the Streamlight Microstream. If that's too big, then I guess its too big. But it is brighter than the Solitaire by a wide margin. We're talking "car headlight compared to a single candle" brightness difference.
I carry a Microstream, and I love it. If you need something capable of filling in for the Beacons of Gondor, it isn't bright enough, but if you just need something to pull out of your pocket and light up a room, it's great. I haven't replaced the battery on mine since July and I use frequently.
I have heard good things about the skeletool, I personally haven't used it. I love my Streamlight Microstream ($17 on amazon with prime shipping) It's 28 lumens (the amazon specs show the old version at 20 Lumens but they ship the new version) from one AAA and it easily fits in your pocket. It's about the width of a AA and just a little longer. It can easily go on a keychain or lanyard. Battery life is about 2 hrs. At 28 lumens it's surprisingly bright for a EDC (although if your job or hobby required using a flashlight a lot I might suggest using it as a backup light) especially for its size. I know a lot of people like the Foursevens. I personally like a tail end button style light so I didn't go with their twist-on multifunction light. Also at $17 I won't be sad if I lose the microstream build quality is surprisingly good for sub $20. Its metal and the clip is super tight on there (although it is removable) if you don't know what to get this might be a good choice. Its a lot better than a $10 keychain light, not much bigger, and only cost a few bucks more.
Hey friendos, I thought it would be fun to try and put together a respectable sub-$100 carry kit from some of my tried and tested items. From left to right, they are:
Streamlight Microstream: $18.33 (amazon)
CRKT Pilar: $24.95 (bladehq)
Fisher Space Pen: $16.43 (amazon)
Timex Weekender: $29.95 (amazon)
Hammer Anvil Wallet: $9.99 (amazon)
Total: $99.65
Maybe this helps someone who's just getting into EDC, or needs a reliable beater kit when doing stupid shit. Anyway, would be cool to see what you guys can come up with from your own inventories.
a bright pen/pocket light is better because you can use it and be talking on your phone at the same time. I can put my pen light in my mouth and have both hands free. If I drop my pen light its screen doesn't shatter. If somebody needs to borrow my pen light I haven't lost my means of communication.
I carry this one every day. It takes AAA batteries so there's no charging. Its pretty bright. Its got a reversible clip thing so you can actually slide it onto the brim of your hat to turn it into a headlamp. https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-MicroStream-Ultra-compact-Aluminum-alkaline/dp/B00143JZ08/
This is my edc light, small and convenient. $16 on Amazon.

EDIT: I missed that you prefer longer lights. Both these are short, but still worth looking at. If twisty is ok (I hate it, but it does make the light a little smaller), then Lumintop has a simple inexpensive option.

Oh I forgot, cool tools like a pocket flashlight are useful!
Here's a non scary link:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00143JZ08/
I'm not sure ~$18 is really all that much lower than usual, though.
No laser. Light is plenty bright for supplemental use.
I typically carry one of these as well
https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-MicroStream-Ultra-compact-Aluminum-alkaline/dp/B00143JZ08/ref=sr_1_6?c=ts&keywords=Flashlights&qid=1654695399&refinements=p_89%3AStreamlight&s=hardware&sr=1-6&ts_id=3180261
They're bright enough to break someone's OODA loop.
They're not something I would mount on a rifle for long-distance illumination.
But as a civilian I'm not engaged in long-range firefights or clearing rooms. I need enough light to change someone's behavior so I don't have to take out my gun, and if I do need to take out my gun enough light to identify my target; that's it. I favor compactness so that I actually have the light with me.
My home guns have more powerful lights.
> The simpler the better
Gotcha! There are actually quite a few in that size range too.
If you want something with a pocket clip and a tailswitch, the Streamlight Microstream is a slightly dimmer, shorter version of the Stylus Pro I mentioned earlier that uses a single AAA. A more premium alternative with a nicer build and LED would be the Foursevens Preon P1. They also make a much brighter, two mode USB rechargeable version.
If a keychain light is more your style, the Sofirn C01S is a particular favorite of mine. It's only $12, runs on a single AAA, has a high and a low mode, and my favorite LED. The Rovyvon A3x Nichia is a nice, bright, usb rechargeable keychain light. It's got a fancier UI with a lot more modes and also has a nice LED. Both of those have pocket clips too if you want to pocket carry them.

I got mine on Amazon a few months ago, highly recommend
You want a powerful but thin flashlight. I would recommend the Streamlight MicroStream https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00143JZ08/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_i_cv4uCb36YNRWA
Board certified in vascular access and infusion therapy.
Thanks, i'd try a streamlight.

Good enough, its not a full size, but I forget I have it until I need it. Id recomment it for the price on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00143JZ08?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
MicroStream -- Amazon link for $17.15
> 45 lumens 2.25 hours
Solitaire -- Amazon link from 11-20 dollars
40 Lumins for 2 hours.
Could be that my Maglite is old but the light is yellow and has a large hole in the middle of the beam and is a huge pain in the ass to turn on and off, the momentary/on/off switch on the Streamlight is entirely too useful compared, and is about the same size. Including a pocket clip and whatnot.
The Streamlight boasts being waterproof but doesn't mention to how far. The Maglite says it is resistant up to one meter. Haven't tested either but in taking them apart the sealing looks much better on the Streamlight
Either way, I just wanted to point out a better and easier to use option, not trying to start a fight.

I used to have this attached to my key chain. (I just clipped the light through a key ring and taped the clip shut)
The Streamlight MicroStream is an awesome light. Takes one AAA battery and only costs $15-20.
Do you need different levels in a keychain-type light? If not, if you'd prefer to keep it simple, the Streamlight Microstream is a superb little light.
Another flashlight option would be the Streamlight Microstream. Less lumens and modes, but I love mine.
Unforunately, I didn't. I just purchased them from Amazon since that was the cheapest price I could find. I should have included links I guess! I tried to get the Leathermans through a distributor at work but it wasn't approved. :(

Is it this one? If so, Amazon has it listed at 28 lumens.
If you hunt around a bit, you might find a streamlight microstream for just under twenty
Also, a lot of people carry this on their keychain.
You could also check out the smaller maglights at your local hardware store.
Hope this helps!
Aside from wallet, keys, and a phone, i'd say a flashlight is essential. Phone lights aren't that great unless its the only source you have. Microstreams or this cree flashlight are good ones. I also carry a chapstick with me because when I need one but don't have one, I feel like this.
Counter-clockwise:
I believe that is a Streamlight, I have one just like it and I really like it. Very compact, AAA battery, and pretty bright for its size.
I just got a Streamlight MicroStream Amazon and I love it! Its about the size of AA only a little longer. Depending on your keychain size it might work (if clipped on my key ring it is the same length as my car key -note. that's a stock photo). The Fenix looks great. This might be a cheaper 2nd option though. Note the amazon specs are for the older version. The new one has 28 Lumens and runs for just over 2 hrs on 1x AAA.
Leatherman Style PS $19.50
Streamlight MicroStream $18.86
CRKT Drifter $39.99
Kingston 16GB Flash Drive $15.99
Total: $94.34
I personally love my Streamlight MicroStream ($17 on amazon) but for a purse the Stylus Pro ($20 on amazon) or ProTAC ($30 on amazon) might suit you better.
All of them are AAA flashlights. The MicroStream is one of the smallest brightest simplest and cheapest little lights out there (when talking about AAA/AA lights. While FourSevens are fantastic lights this one is half the price) it has about 28 Lumens and runs for just over 2 hours (the amazon info shows the older model while they ship the newer model). The big thing about the ProTac is the multi level brightness and strobe feature. The first two don't have this. I personally don't carry extra batteries but thats mostly because I carry it in my pocket. In a purse I might take an old film container or medicine container and throw a few AA or AAA in it. (This is better than a zip lock. They'll all stay positive side up, negative down instead of bouncing around in there)
Agreed. From the "self-defense" standpoint, no, you should never move toward trouble. Unfortunately, from this standpoint, the only answer to any question is "barricade yourself indoors and call the police"
Guy knocking on your front door with a high-viz vest and an ID badge? Barricade yourself indoors and call the police. Guy wandering around the street, looking like he's either drunk or in a diabetic stupor? Barricade yourself indoors and call the police. Guy pulls up in a brown truck and leaves a cardboard box on your front steps? If this is in any way suspicious, the proper solution from a self-defense standpoint is, again, barricade the doors and call the police.
Unfortunately the world isn't safe, and can never be made truly safe. But, we can all live in a safer world if when trouble comes knocking, we knock back. When we do this, and we find less trouble deciding to knock.
Going back up to OP's story, calling the cops would have had two or more cops rolling up, briefed only that there were intruders at the neighbor's address. They could have spotted the other neighbors, concluded they were the intruders in question, and if they felt they (the police) were in danger, shot and killed the other neighbors. The cops don't immediately know your neighbors. You do. You're much less likely to mistake them for dangerous violent criminals than they are.
Carry the flashlight, and if you're comfortable investigating, go do it. Yes, it's a risk. Yes, some stupid fucking dumbass took this to extremes and threatened to injure me inside of my client's home when he mistook me for a copper thief, so no, you can't break the law yourself, but you certainly can investigate. Hell, I always have at least a Microstream in my pocket and a Nanostream on my keychain, plus a bunch of others in nearly every room of the house.
Perhaps the word you're thinking of is Lumens? Which is a unit of brightness.
The cheapest flashlight I'd recommend is the Fenix E01, which is tiny and quite bright enough for close use, plus the battery lasts for over ten hours without losing any brightness. The light is tinted slightly purple, though. I personally carry a Streamlight Microstream, which is a bit larger but brighter and has a handy switch and a nicer beam. Also popular is the Fenix E05 with the same amount of light as the Streamlight, but in a smaller package and a more diffuse beam; and the very similar Preon 0. If you can handle an extra $10 and something a bit fatter, the Fenix E11 gives you 5x the brightness of everything else I've mentioned.
