I upgraded my old IPad Air to a newer one this past spring for the purpose of school (nursing student) and it really depends on what you plan on using your iPad for. I did a bunch of research before deciding to get this stylus that’s comparable to the Apple Pencil. I’ll post a link below for reference; only $30, so great pricing but again, depends on what you plan on using your iPad for. I use mine with my stylus pencil daily for note taking, highlighting, etc. and I’ve been very happy with this stylus pencil. It connects automatically to my iPad via Bluetooth, the battery lasts for a very long time, recharging doesn’t take very long, and replacement tips for the stylus are reasonably priced. Another factor to consider is, depending on the iPad you purchased, do you need the first or second generation Apple Pencil. Depending on your intended use, you may benefit from getting the second generation pencil if your iPad requires it. Link to Amazon for Stylus Pen
Hey everyone. I currently have the 8th gen iPad and I'm interested in an apple pencil. The problem is I don't want to pay $100 for one, especially if I do not know if I'll actually use it. I found this little guy on amazon and was wondering if anyone has used it. It has 4.5 stars and over 55,600 reviews so I assume it is decent. I do not want to waste $100 on an item but don't mind wasting $30 if you get my drift. Thanks for your feedback.
How advanced of a stylus do you need?
I got something similar to this on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0831BF1FH/
Please do NOT buy that one. It’s way too overpriced. I watched a YouTube video where some guy got something like that from Alibaba and paid ~$12 USD. Mine was about 20 but I got one day shipping. They’re all clones of one another.
I also ended up buying a 2nd gen Apple Pencil and it honestly isn’t to different. I am not a pro user by any means though.
An Apple Pencil allows for the best experience in procreate, but you don’t need one for shading. I use an Apple Pencil knock of that has palm rejection and a shade function when you angle the stylus. It was on sale for like 30 bucks on Amazon. I do still want an Apple Pencil, mainly for the pressure sensing, but I’ll wait for a little while longer. Apparently Reddit doesn’t think it’s a real link
I just ordered iPad Mini I would like to do some light note taking and sketching but I won't do enough to justify buying an Apple Pencil. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this cheapy. It has good reviews but I trust the reviews these days on Amazon as far as I could throw them.

I've used this stylus on my ipad mini 5th gen for the past 9 months and have absolutely LOVED it. Now given, since it's not Apple's proprietary product with all the special features, it wont have the ability to be pressure sensitive, have the tilt-shading mode, or charge via the device itself (it charges via usb-c). However, the battery is great, the look and overall build quality is very solid and feels incredibly similar to the actual Apple Pencil, and is overall a solid purchase 👍🏽
I got an iPad Pro a few weeks ago with the Apple Pencil and love it. There’s a cheaper pencil alternative on amazon for $35 and it has great reviews, I highly considered that one. The only downside is it does not have pressure sensitivity but it should serve it’s purpose in lightroom. Here’s the link
If you go on Amazon they have pencil alternatives for $30-40. They do tilt, but not pressure, and tend to charge over USB C. Some have a magnetic flat side, but they mostly come with extra tips.

I got this one, but there are many different brands that seem basically the same.
Sure! I have this stylus from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0831BF1FH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_UTWgFbSHQXARA
It doesn't have pressure sensitivity, but for basic note-taking and navigating around apps it works really well! I've even used it a bit in Affinity Photo and have had no issues.
I think it might be using the same tech that's in the Logitech crayon, as it has similar features and behaves the same way.
So I’ve seen an alternative on amazon for the Apple Pencil that’s just like $30 and has thousands of positive reviews. Do you have any experience with alternative brands, or probably just stick with the original Apple Pencil?

I'd say not especially, unless it was one of the relatively few 10.5" Pros produced in 2019 (the device itself was introduced in 2017, discontinued in early 2019). Also, keep in mind that Apple doesn't provide battery health stats in iPadOS (only in iOS, who knows why...), so you'll need to download a third party app like iMazing to even see battery health.
In any case, from Apple's perspective, the 10.5" iPad Pro will soon be a 6 year-old device. The Pros do get software updates somewhat longer than Airs and much longer than base iPads, but I wouldn't expect more than around 2 additional years of software updates for this particular device.
Moreover, it's not much more to get an Apple-refurbished 2020 iPad Air or iPad Pro, and those devices come with:
It's more initial outlay for sure, but one of the refurb options linked above will last longer and perform better in both the short and long term. If you're not looking to do art/content creation on your iPad (i.e. just notes and markups), save a buck and go with a third party option that lacks pressure sensitivity (but still supports tilt, palm rejection, etc.).
iPad Air gen 4 with the apple pencil 2 and paper-like screen protector. Note-taking app of choice: notability
If the apple pencil is outside of your budget, I also had https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0831BF1FH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it was just as good! Doesn't charge magnetically like the apple pencil but that's reasonable for the $30 price point.
I currently use the paper-like generic screen protector https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SKV995M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it's great!
This was the pencil dupe I bought. I’ve had it for several months and it works great! It’s like $30 Stylus Pen for iPad with Palm... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0831BF1FH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I’ve already seen a couple people recommend procreate, and I second that suggestion, but I want to give you a bit more information. To use procreate you’ll need an iPad of at least the fifth generation or any of the iPad pros. I got the eighth generation 10.2 iPad at Walmart were it was pretty reasonably priced and has worked great. Also for a stylus you can go the Apple Pencil route just make sure you know what generation of iPad you have and get the pencil that is compatible. I have also had great success with this stylus which is significantly cheaper. Procreate is a very popular app so there are many tutorials on how to use it on YouTube I found this one particularly helpful. Good luck on your digital art journey! I promise you it’s worth it.
Amazon has a great alternative for the apple pencil. Has great reviews. Maybe you can give it a thought/try

Me to. I have the mini 5. Also, I jb welded another nut to the back of the iPad holder so I could lower it more towards the center of the yoke. You really don't notice the ipad at all now. I also added a pen holder to the yoke mount so it holds my nock off apple pen.

I've used this one for almost a year now and it's great! It looks like they make a newer, slightly cheaper one with a magnet now too. The only reason I'm switching over to a proper Apple Pencil 2 is because I'm getting one for free.
So I use an off brand Apple Pencil from amazon that costed like ~$30 depending on what sale they have going on. It works pretty well for me so you can look into it or similar ones. Link below:

Idk what apps you will be using for the study but iPads tend to sense the stylus and will let marks being made without worrying about having to worry about clicking something first. When is switch between files I just start writing or when I google something it just senses the pen and will let you write in the search bar. Hopefully this means your participants will always be able to just draw. Good luck on your project.
i got a great apple pencil knockoff that works just as good for like a quarter of the price https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0831BF1FH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
