As a lover of vintage rigid steel mtbs for commuters:
Personal preferences:
That's one of those cheap chinese racks, sometimes called sunlite:
https://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Gold-Front-Rack-Black/dp/B002MKHR6G/
The horizontal bar that connects to the fork crown needs some creative bending to fit under the canti straddle, but it's not too hard.
Basket is stolen from my mom's wine rack.

Used it for 2 years and it regularly carried 30+ lbs of groceries home for me... It did finally break, but not before I had gotten my money's worth, and not in a catastrophic way. One of the arms that was supported by the brake boss gave, but it gave me lots of warning and I had bought the replacement already.
Super cheapo Sunlite one off Amazon that works great.

I don't doubt you because I never believed it anyway but Sunlite lists it as 40lbs max. Or, more specifically, the Amazon listing for the Sunlite GoldTec lists it as 40 lbs.
I've probably had 25lbs. on mine for a good few miles at least once before.
is there a specific keyword i should be using? or do i just have to find a lighter basket that just clamps to the handlebars?
i am trying to find a front basket that is at least 12x9.5 wide, but they all mount like the one above
i found this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MKHR6G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A15MD58ELY2BCA&psc=1
could i use that plus the basket, just having the basket clamped to the handlebars and "resting" on the rack?
i am not planning on putting a lot of weight there, just food/grocery type stuff
Hi; thanks! I needed something casual, but still fast--you never know when you need to get away quickly.
The racks are basic Sunlites: http://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Gold-Tec-Front-Rack/dp/B002MKHR6G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1444170811&sr=8-2&keywords=sunlite+bike+rack
That looks sick! I recommend getting a small front rack that mounts to the brake bosses and attaching the basked to that instead of using the legs. It will let you have the weight a lot lower and it will handle better. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Gold-Front-Rack-Black/dp/B002MKHR6G/
Looks like the Sunlite rack I have. It's a good way to carry a six pack.
>Does anyone know of some good utility forks for a 26’er with cantilever mounts?
There are a couple racks that can be mounted to that stock fork, but I suppose it all really depends on what type of rack you want.
One way to mount a rack is to cross the rack struts over the fork and attach them to the fender eyelet you have on the stock fork. I've done this with an Origin8 messenger rack before (some people attach it directly to the front QR, but that's too risky for me). It requires some ingenuity since the opening of the struts is intended for a bolt on front axle. I did it like this, but with metal washers and some v brake pad spacers to make sure the strut cleared the fork blades.
You also have the option to use a canti mounted rack like this one from Velo Orange (Nitto and others make them as well. Some are very inexpensive)
Double ended studs make this type of rack install easy. Velo Orange sells them, and they're also used in VW & some GM engines
As for a replacement fork, I assume you have a 1" threaded fork there, given the model year, but it's always best to check to be 100% sure. There are plenty of options for a 1-1/8" fork, if you switch to a threadless headset, but it's slim pickings for 1"
You'll also want to establish the Axle-Crown length of the stock fork, and try to figure out the rake. It's probably ~400mm and ~44mm respectively.
Soma makes some 1" threaded (and threadless) forks that have dual eyelets and canti mounts
stridsland makes a fork that will do everything, including letting you run a disc up front for some mullet action! https://www.stridsland.com/shop/barnacle-fork/
Thanks! It’s a cheap rack from Amazon.
Sunlite Gold Tec Front Rack,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002MKHR6G?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
No complaints so far.
Everyone's favorite made in China front rack. Sunlite Gold with a Wald ziptied.
The Sunrise bars were the 3rd ones I tried on mine and I really like them. Allowed me to chop the steerer down a little bit too.
I'm rockin this cheapo Amazon one and it's worked fine so far. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MKHR6G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have a REICo-op ADV 3.1 and I'm lookin to purchase the front rack for it, to help ease the commute a little bit (toss the backpack and go forward kind of thing).
Optimistically purchased Sunlite goldteck front rack after seeing it on a number of builds here, but "off the shelf" it doesn't work with my bike. and is too small for my needs.
Looking into
- Rawland Cycles Demiporteur
- Blackburn Bootlegger
- Blackburn Local Basket

Anything you can spare helps, especially when it comes to fit of the rack to the front of the bike.
this rack is the cheapest and decent quality. it mounts to v-brake posts, or you can use p-clamps to attach directly to the fork
Heard good things and am thinking of picking up this one. Inexpensive, too!

Try a front cantilever rack like this.
search amazon, SUNLITE Gold Tec Front Rack, 26"/700c
There's this. I put it on my budget beater shopping bike because I wanted something to securely zip tie that shallow plastic crate to. It was working well but as I got more daring with loading up the front, the tab attaching it to the fork crown eventually broke so I replaced it with a piece of cheap flat steel that I bent into shape and drilled a couple holes to fit. Realizing the amount of weight I wanted to carry was going to be too much for those 3 anchor points, I decided to rig up some Wald basket struts between the front axle to the front of that small rack. Now I'm able to haul upwards of 20 lbs up front. I realize I could have simply ordered a Wald front basket but I prefer the shallow edges, look and fit of that plastic crate. The shallow Wald "pizza delivery" style rack sits too high up and is anchored to the handlebars. This puts my load lower over the wheel and gives me room to stack taller items without blocking my view.
Well there is the new Rawland rack that attaches to brazeons not Canti studs.
There is the cheap Sunlite rack in black
Everything else I know of is bigger and or mounts to the fork dropouts. Simworks, Pass&Stow, HaulinColin all come in black.
Probably the cheapest end of the spectrum as far as cheap-but-still-functional front racks go:
Anecdotes and mods aplenty here.
