There are a variety of options for around $15 that have an IR receiver that is connected to a strip of leds. I imagine you could fabricate a sign and back light it. Or you could just have a led attached instead of a strip.
I used this one except I used a smaller 12v power supply I had around since I only needed about a foot of the LEDs and not the whole 5 meters. You could use this power supply its just heavier and bigger so might not fit in all decks.

Based on the generic looking round plastic button remote and the LED controller looking box on the floor of the case, they may be using a generic remote controllable RGB strip kit, like this, except that they're probably powering the controller directly from the PSU.
Yes one min,
Edit: SUPERNIGHT 5-Meter Waterproof Flexible Color Changing RGB SMD5050 300 LEDs Light Strip Kit with 44 Key Remote and 12V 5A Power Supply https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_CWqUYBpXlQQYQ
This one is great and cheap the remote and hues are awesome and it's really bright! Fits perfectly in my S340 elite!
I got this strip and slapped it to the back of my desk.
These are the ones I bought. I bought two. one for each desk https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASHQQKI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Any of the similar brands would work though. You might want to get more adhesive or another way to mount them because the glue that comes with it isn't that strong. Mine kept falling off and I ended up taping it to the backside of my desk
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASHQQKI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
$22, i bought some Velcro squares to make sure they stay stuck. I will say that for the first 2 weeks this damn strip stunk up the room horribly. Idk if it was the adhesive or what but it was absolutely terrible.
No worries, a quick Amazon search for LED RGB got me this which is pretty much what most people tend to use:
I don't know what country you're from though, so I can't say much about where you could get some.
you could do something like this
they can be cut and use jumpers and splice in wires to cover multiple strips from the reel in different spots.
they would all have to be the same color though, or you could buy multiple sets to have more than 1 controller, but thats gets pretty wasteful for a few 1' long strips.
I need outlets because the lights I'm using come with plugged control boxes.
But I'm curious why you think I need 12/4 as that gets to the heart of my question.
Here. Very easy to setup, just sticks right to whatever you want and you plug in the controller.
Do you have a metal desk?
Either way, I have this strip which is pretty good. The tape on the back is pretty shit though, so you would have to deal with that. I used some electrical tape to tape it onto my desk ( it's black, and so is the desk, so it worked well ).
Maybe a half inch apart?
This is what I got. The power supply and controller are not waterproof, but I tucked them up under a gutter where they wouldn't be exposed. They make addressable strips, where you can program multiple colors like red, white, and blue, but they are more expensive.
I bought it from a local store in my country, but they look exactly like these. http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-5-Meter-Waterproof-Flexible-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1451733226&sr=1-2&keywords=led
thanks man, I planned on getting this LED kid for the cabinet since there is no inner lighting to begin with (I'd need glass shelves too). But this kit is programmable so I'd be able to set different colors to different sections to make it look like the laser beams actually gave off light. That'd be awesome to use like a neon/glow in the dark paint for the laser blasts so they would glow when the lights were off or glow with the lights being dim that way they pop out more... agh I want to go home from work now and start on this now hahahaha
EDIT: fixed link display cause I'm retarded
I used 1 of these and another 16ft extension. It was super easy to put up. I do recommend doing a test run of the stuff first to make sure it will work where you want it.
While I don't have experience with the NZXT Hue I will say I did something similar with this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_wVFzwbR1CBPZ5
About $25 for 16 feet (more than any computer case will ever need) comes with a nice remote, is super bright (but adjustable) and in general makes things look really cool. Only downsides are that you'd need an adapter to plug it into your PSU (luckily I already had one) and the adhesive on it sucks but you can pull it off easily and get better stuff.
If you want a bit more of a DIY solution go with these:
http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT%C2%AE-Waterproof-Flexible-strip-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI
For the same price you get:
color changing(you can make them warmer so they match the light where the furniture will live)
4x the length
a remote
plus you can add more strips for ~$10
I'm using this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASHQQKI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
I was initially going to use these for under kitchen cabinet lighting but decided against it. If I were to buy some for the TV backlighting, I would purchase USB powered ones. However, the ones Im using are controlled with SmartThings so I have access to it via home automation.
Are these Supernight or similar RGB LED strips (non-addressable)? I've seen that a bunch of times; some in the middle will be a slightly different color, nothing shorted or broken.
If that's the type of strip you have, the strip is in segments of 3 LEDs each. You should be able to cut out that part (down the middle of the copper pads) and splice together the two pieces on either side with a little soldering.
Otherwise, you can replace it cheaply with those Supernight ones I linked, unless you have some setup where it echoes the colors on the TV or does addressable patterns.
Maybe something like this. Can set many different colors, dimmable.
I used this for under cabinet lighting in my kitchen.
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASHQQKI?keywords=led%20light%20strips&qid=1450218869&ref_=sr_1_3&sr=8-3
Thanks! Here's the best way to go about powering them, it's a kit that includes a plug you can also check online for other way to power them, like a battery pack, etc.
Thanks, appreciate, a lot of time and thought went into planning the furniture pieces. Not so much the wall stuff though, but in time!
Wall paint is Smokestack grey, the duvet is West Elm, and the light strips are from Amazon
Might still do it but at one time I was wanting to put a bunch of these under my desk and around my desk. Don't know if you would care to do it but here you go I don't know if this is the best brand to go with I just remember seeing it and having a bookmark of them.
I have exactly what you're looking for in my van! It really is a cool party trick when people want to see the inside.
Here's what I used. - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASHQQKI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
I'll try to take and upload a video tomorrow if I am near my van when it's dark outside.
Take a look at these, they're not as expensive as the Ikea lights, and have lasted me for quite a while without any trouble.
Hey! I have a 5ft female ball (Juno aka "June Buggy" aka "Snakey Pantalones"). We got a color-change LED strip light with a remote for about $30. Attaching it to the upper back wall of her Animal Plastics tub, we can now turn it on red to not bug her or white to see her well. This one on Amazon is really similar.
Thank you! :) It was definitely a bigger pain in the butt to run the wires in the wall than I was expecting, but worth it once done. LED strip behind TV is just one of these. Hue LightStrip would be a nice upgrade.
T5 T8 and T12 are just bulb sizes. 12 being the largest and 5 smaller. T5 HO are high output lights that you would only need for plants.
I know of a few people that have used the leds. The are stick on and inexpensive. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_HSTVvb5FTT1T9
I have seen some people buy a piece of gutter and put it upside-down with the leds stuck to the inside.
These lights from Amazon. Tripped for the first time this weekend and these lights made a HUGE difference. So much fun
Excuse me if I'm wrong, but I believe they used something like this .
I had these myself and they worked great. You apply them to the edge of your desk and just turn them on. Any color you want as well. I'm just a bit confused on whether these used these or not because it seems the light is dimmed on the left and right of the monitors. But these LEDS I linked do work really well.
I would want to get something like this, but its only 30ft or so. I'm not sure how you go about adding additional footage to it. And I'm not sure if it can make a warm-white color.
sorry for the late response:
Get the 3528 300 LED lights, not the 5050. I bought both and I think the 5050 means the two LEDs next to each other don't make the same color, but work together to make a glow. I'm using the 3528 which changes the color of every LED on there.
edit: I think the price went WAYYY DOWN
Do you want to just use it as a light? Or do you need other functions on the PCB? If the former, maybe consider modding it with an LED kit like this?
There are cheaper kits of course, sans remote etc. Anyway something to consider if you can't find a replacement PCB. Good Luck!
Friendly bit of advice, you can get RGB cut-able LED strips with adhesive backing, power adapter, and a remote for around $20/piece on amazon, cheaper for shorter lengths and only a single color.
Great work, btw.
If I where you, I would use this
Just cut to whatever size you want and solder the strips back together, has a nice remote to choose color and even has some cool effects. Pretty cheap too.
I have used this in my computer just as a test, and it worked wonders. You could hide the little receiver just about anywhere (so long as the antenna was visible) and the remote worked beautifully through the window, no troubles at all..

Oh man!.. that would be sweet to have a setup like that... I only have a cheap setup of some LED strips, some imitation Par can lights that rotate (were like $4) and a rotating dome light lol... none of us are willing to roll with the black light out due to the fact that we actually want to sit on the sofa and floor without the possible "oh wtf is thatttttttt?!?!"
Any reason why you arent looking at LED strips?
RGB LED strip with remote and power supply http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-Waterproof-Flexible-300leds-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1401398168&sr=8-4&keywords=led+lights
At least you could have used a white power cord! Otherwise it looks much better.
I thought about going with the ikea LEDs but then found this strip on amazon. Price is about the same and this one has a remote and is longer. I love it.
It look DYI. It looks a lot like my desk. I used to of these
and ordered some LED muticolor lights from amazon
If you don't have menards where you live a lot of the big box improvement store have them for about the same price or you could call a countertop company and see what they can do for you.
Here is one of the LED strips that I use. When you open up the packaging hold your breath as you get a nice smell of the factory the thing came out of, and it is depressing. leaving it over night to air out.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=twister_B07GKRQT3K?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
The LED track I currently use for the frame
I purchased some good adhesive backed Velcro from Big Box store and cut everything to fit the bike frame for easy install and removal if a light strip goes out.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ME3ZH7C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use this battery pack for the bike frames and the smaller ones they sell for the wheels.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ME3ZH7C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
There are some basic extender clips off amazon for the LEDs that "work" to connect the frame parts together but short of soldering all the extender clips are hit and miss, so find what works for you.
For the wheels you can do one of three things for installing. 1
Buy lots of strong adhesive ( a glue gun doesn't work that well and can melt/boil the glue tape the strips come on) and physically fit a square into a round hole. Glue the strips to the wheel frame so the lights are facing to the center but at an angle of the wheel. While the strips are bendable they are only bendable going up and down not side to side so parts of the strip start to bow-out but those spots can be forced into place with enough adhesive. The strips will start to separate from the wheel frame because physics dictates this can't work. It is what I did first to both wheels. The front side didn't work out but the back wheel has been holding together for the past couple of months.
2
Buy some clear flexible tubing from local box mart and some zip ties. Keep the protective adhesive tape on the LED strip so it can still slide into the tubing and use the zip ties to attach the tubing to the spokes. It will look like shit but it gets the job done. Also cut zip ties are sharp so it kind of turns the wheel into a shitty chainsaw.
3 buy a 3D printer to make clips to hold the LEDs to the spokes.
As for the power supply I temporary have some Velcro holding them to the wheel spokes, that I am trying to fix.

The ones behind the desk are these ones that I got off Amazon. Pretty cheap and sometimes the controller gets messed up to where it doesn't pick the right color when you click on it but overall I think they're worth it for the price.
The Nanoleafs are the small triangles that I combined to create a larger triangle above the computer. Those can be found here if you want to take a look.
I've found the ones made by Supernight on amazon reliable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASHQQKI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But since there's lots of generics and different styles and maybe you don't want to shop with amazon, here's (in my opinion) what you want to look for:
I've bought too many of these for different apartments and rooms and to see if some feature or another is better, but following the above guidelines or just buying that listing should be safe.
Of course really I recommend going to adafruit.com, getting an arduino and neopixels, and making yourself some rainbows -- both the adafruit code and FastLED libraries have default rainbow animations, so it's pretty simple.
I like your idea and may have to keep that in mind for myself someday. I'm a fan of Taiidan colors with the yellow with red trim look. You might do that with blue LED accent lighting like the lights from the hangar bays and windows. Custom LED installations are super easy if you just get a kit like this. Just be sure to add extra staples/glue/tape to secure the lights because the Chinese adhesive will last 3 days tops. Also there are better RGB controllers out there or you can do addressable WS2813 LEDs if you want to get fancy.
I have a collection of the paper model files if you are having trouble finding your own. I know some of the sites that hosted great collections have gone down over the years. Lemme know if you want to go that route. I also have DoK mesh files if you need them for 3D printing purposes. Shapeways.com is a great place to get reasonably affordable nice looking 3D prints.
For art, there are a couple legends around here who have uploaded some custom drawn and rendered art you may like. /u/lord_pelaxus has a variety of styles here, here, here, here, here, and here, while /u/owhshit does quite a bit of custom renders here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
There are more out there if you scan through the top /r/homeworld posts of all time.
those standard 5m led strips you find on amazon with the remote
but make sure that there is this transparent plastik thing above the leds. smthin like this it is https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=psdc_11974311_t1_B00DTOAWZ2
These but with a custom built controller powered by a Raspberry Pi.
I used this: https://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-5-Meter-Waterproof-Flexible-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1471269118&sr=8-4&keywords=led+lighting Literally just cut to length. Used 90 degree connectors: https://www.amazon.com/L-shape-4-conductor-Splitter-Corner-Connector/dp/B00LUI2KCW/ref=pd_sim_267_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=41YJNx%2BLEpL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=12N70QWKWEPP4667T2SR.
A bit tricky to use connectors as you have to separate the clear rubber/silicone (whatever it is) from the strip. I used my finger nail to peel the two apart anywhere I needed to make a 90 degree connection. Used velcro to keep the small power supply on the back of monitor (can't see back of my monitor where it sits). Used some 3m tape to keep attached even though the strips are peel and stick, they did not stick without some good double sided tape. Plug in and use supplied remote to turn on and off or change colors if you like although I can't imagine using anything other than white. It is perfect for early morning or night time work/gaming.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASHQQKI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is the LED strip that I'll be using. It has it's own power button on the remote, but I do want to try and hijack that with a button.
> A fellow fan of Stalker i see
Actually, I've never played Stalker. I really should. I just find the whole Chernobyl disaster really interesting.
> What do you use for backlighting?
Basically these guys. I've custom built some hardware to interface them with a Raspberry Pi so I can set the color from my phone and it'll set the colors of my keyboard and mouse to the same.
Used this and only needed ~120 LED's to cover my bike
What would you recommend? Already went through two of these and they barely lasted 3 months before dying.
Just needs the correct male plug.

I assume that this is what you were looking for: http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-5-Meter-Waterproof-Flexible-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI (These are what I have anyway)
You could use cuttable led strips and do all sides. http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-5-Meter-Waterproof-Flexible-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI/
You might want to look into LED strips like this.
sure! Supernight LED Light strip. Amazon link
Corsair has some LED fans at about $30 for a pack of two.
NZXT has an RGB LED strip which mounts in a 5.25in bay. Here is a mod for mounting it without using a 5.25in slot.
NZXT also has LED fans as well as other brands like BitFenix have both LED fans and LED strips. Decide which you think you'll want.
EDIT: I'm sure there are lots of other brands that have these things as well. I also saw a popular thing for less than $30 on Amazon which is a more "universal" use of LED strips as in you can use them wherever, like under your desk and stuff. Looks really good if done well. Lots of people of the PCMR use these and there are plenty of setups using these on /r/battlestations if you can find them.
I recommend this lighting to everyone. Great colors and easy to setup. http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT%C2%AE-Waterproof-Flexible-strip-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1436206427&sr=8-2&keywords=led+lighting

Thanks! Most appreciated.
Those were the LED Light Strips from Ikea (Found HERE.)
I had previously placed an order for a set of SUPERNIGHT® 16.4ft 5M - RGB SMD5050 LED Light Strip Kit, but when received, they didn't work. Luck of the straw. I went ahead and dropped by Ikea to grab something temporary while I wait to receive my replacement; after which, I'm going to retire the Ikea LEDS to serve in a straight line behind my desk (in white.)
If you want to do a liquor cabinet, here's how I would do it.
Find a place around you that will either:
Tempered glass could run you a few hundred for 2 shelves, but will be safer. If you are really lucky, do a search on Ikea.com or other similar sites that sell furniture, and you may find some tempered shelves that may fit. You want them to fit inside your firebox there.
Next, the brick is really cool and you should show it off. Remove all the fake stuff, and if the underlying brick is painted white, I'd take a steel brush attachment for a drill to it, and distress it, then paint it with a high gloss to really show it off and protect it.
Run a new switch somewhere nearby. Run a line from it to the interior of the firebox. If you have access from above, that will be easiest(drop it down the existing vent), or see if you can come from below. Hide this new wire if you must, with a false back in the firebox. Wire this line to some led pucks or color change led strip if you like. http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT%C2%AE-Waterproof-Flexible-300leds-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=pd_cp_MI_0
Next, drill holes for pegs for your shelves. Insert your glass shelves. Looks like this space could handle 2 of them. Make sure you put some masonry adhesive in the holes with the pegs, because under weight, they may break down the old brick.
If you want more storage, you could add any type of floating shelves to the exterior. A wrap around type might look nice on the corners. Just remember if you want them to support any kind of weight, IE liquor bottles, you better use some beefy anchor sleeves to screw them to the brick. Something like this: http://www.lowes.com/pd_17671-10457-7721_4294690613__?productId=3444570&Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNs%3Dp_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&facetInfo= I don't like risking weight on normal Tapcon screws when you can use an anchor sleeve.
I may be grossly underestimating how low this thing is though. Is it even going to be comfortable to use as a liquor cabinet at it's current height?
Here is most of what you will need. The strip can be cut to form whatever shape you would need. Gonna need a way to reconnect them though.
These!: http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT%C2%AE-Waterproof-Flexible-300leds-Changing/dp/B00ASHQQKI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1424046013&sr=8-2&keywords=led+strip I did have to do some super ghetto rigging to get them the way I like.
The strip is 16 feet long, so i measured out a rectangle for the top of my case, and the front length of the case. I then cut the strip into sections so i could run the cable how i wanted.
I used these adapters to connect each of the sections i made
For the connection from the front left cable to the front right cable, i spliced one of the connectors with some white spare cable i bought, and ran it across the bottom of the case (seen in one of the pictures. Then i mounted everything with 3M mounting tape, which is highly recommended. Let me know if you have other questions, as I made some mistakes which cost me some length of LEDs but was overall not too hard.
OP might want to consider something like this.
The link is under the first picture, but here you go: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASHQQKI/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I prefer these when I'm doing LED lighting. It requires a little bit of soldering, but just a singe Molex connector where the AC power brick is. Two wires total.
Long strip, lots of color options, remote control, has the ability to adjust your color settings in R,G or B one step at a time in either direction and save custom color profiles and has several different pulsating/flashing lighting effects if you're into that.
Regardless of which one you get, if you go with a long LED strip like this you should either get the NON-waterproof version or be ready to cut and solder the strips at every corner. The waterproof covering is excellent but doesn't bend very well at all.
Also, invest in some thin double-sided tape. The adhesvie that comes with a lot of these isn't very good.
I have these in my room and they light the whole place up. Add a smoke machine and the sound receiver and you got a great set up.
