The rectangular cutout is for the gas and the notch at the bottom is for water. And if something is bent or locked you can use the wedge and pry hook to get it open.
It's a little more than $10 these days but this is what you want. It's aluminum so it's non-sparking relatively light-weight, but still heavy duty enough for emergency use.
