I bought a bunch of 16oz. glass swing-top bottles from a retail place called Chef's Emporium. I put pourer tops on them when in use and seal them with the swing top when it's time to put them in the fridge.
They're all over Amazon. Like this: Swing Top Grolsch Glass Bottles 16oz - CLEAR - For Brewing Kombucha Kefir Beer (6 Set) Bonus Gaskets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LB1862A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_pG0Rzb1GQ3PJY
I just got a set of them on amazon that I really like. Solid, got a strong carbonation, and a bit smaller than the giant ones so I can make a variety of flavors with a batch of water kefir.

I recently switched from using recycled GT bottles to swing tops. It made a world of difference! Honestly, the carbonation increased by 50%.
These are the ones I bought off of Amazon...Swing Top Bottles
They came with the bottles! You get a bunch of the stickers and a chalk marker with 6 bottles.
If you search “Chalk sticker label” on Amazon you can find a bunch of them in all kinds of shapes and sizes!
I got the 16oz bottles from Amazon. They work great and are fermentation grade. The large one is a reused cider bottle. I’ve had great success with carbonating in those bottles as well.

you can find them at most homebrew shops. Otherwise amazon has them as well.
Liosten to this guy OP, he's the only one that actually answered your question. Those canning jars can't take too much pressure and are not usually perfectly cylindrical, this puts even more pressure on the corners.
They would probably work if you did a short 2F but then you'd have the same problem as you did with the growler, not enough carbonation, plus the added risk of a glassy, liquidy mess.
I'd just order a pack or dedicated swingtop bottles from amazon. If you wanted you buy a couple of 4-packs or Grolsh lager for the same price, and get the added bonus of 2 exta bottles and all of that delicious beery goodness.
Amazon!

I bought a six pack of glass bottles off Amazon, fill them with water and keep them in the fridge. Every so often I throw them in the dishwasher when they start to get grimey.

You only have to pay for them once, and then you can use them forever.
A tip though: remove the "caps" and the metal wire things that seal the bottles before putting them in the dishwasher, otherwise they start to rust.
I used these from Amazon. They're slightly price-y compared to some cheaper options on Amazon at $3 a bottle, but I really love em. They come with extra gaskets and whiteboard stickers and marker so you can write and rewrite whatever you need on each bottle.
Edit: I haven't had any bottles break, and I've had 2 bottles that were extremely fizzy pop the top but the tops were easy to put back.

I bought these from Amazon last November & they've been working out great!!! I did notice a couple of air bubbles in the glass, but I have not had any problems with mine. I've also purchased several bottles of GT's and reuse ALL of those bottles too. I am consistently brewing 3, 1 gallon bottles. Each gallon provides me with 1 weeks worth of kombucha.
Hello!
1: what I say is not an explotion of the bottle, it's when I open the bottle theres a lot of pressure and it "explodes". That just means that the Booch goes out flying, but the glass stays intact

Good luck and let me know anything else!
Had similar problems early on. Went from 7 day 1F to 10 day solved that for me. I also keep my house in the high 70's-low 80's which i know some people find unbearable (comfortable temp for me).
Also I don't add sugar to 2F, but usually just let them sit for 4 days before refrigerating (though i might go back to 3 since my latest batches have had too much carbonation).
Finally, i started to use these bottles instead and they're honestly amazing. Best seal of the 3 brands I've bought and I'll be sticking with them.
Not OP but just stumbled on the same bottles and labels here on Amazon while looking for starter kits!
Amazon! They came with the bottles.

Got them on amazon a while ago. Don’t remember the exact ones but something like this would work fine
It came with the chalkboard labels! It's actually like a mix of chalk and whiteboard, like a chalk marker? Got them off Amazon
Isn't this a brewing bottle though? The bottle cap is supposed to go off before the bottle explodes. You can check this as example.
Don't do your 2F in plastic bottles! The plastic will leech into your brew, leaving a nasty after-taste. Instead, try reusing kombucha bottles you buy in-store, they're rated to hold carbonation and won't leech anything into your brew.
I'd recommend buying some swing-top bottles if you're planning on brewing into the future - they make a big difference!
