Preservatives called "itchy Ms" can be a culprit - they are typically Methychloroisothiazolinone & Methylisothiazolinone, long names starting with M. Some good products without them are Shea Moisture, Cantu, Yes to Carrots, Not Your Mothers Naturals.
If it's really serious you might want to see a dermatologist. I did and was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis. I was given a medicated shampoo and it worked OK but through Amazon I found this dog shampoo and it is freaking amazing even if it smells like tar. Works better than everything I've ever tried.
I've switched over to the "curly girl" method so I use all sulfate/silicone free products, that dog shampoo works well with that routine but I don't have a lot of issues like I used to so I rarely need to use it.
Hi, I also have a 7 month old Shar Pei. When he was about 3 months old he also developed the same thing. I assumed it was the heat here in Florida but I also saw some red spots. I tried to take him to the vet as soon as I noticed but they could not squeeze me in that weekend. I decided to try something out in the meantime to make sure he feels better. I bought him this shampoo called veterinary formula clinical care. I got him the purple bottle and he is doing great now! It’s a very cheap shampoo but it saved me a visit to the vet. I bathe him every week since he suffers from dry skin and that worked out for me! I hope this helps you out. veterinary formula clinical care
I'm so sorry!
We've had luck with Apoquel for our pittie with skin issues, although it sounds like you might be past that point already...Have you tried antiseborrheic shampoo? That's been useful when we've had short-term issues with our TWC, but I think that was more about detergent irritation than allergies, so maybe not the same...
It's so tough, because the poor pups are always so stoic in their suffering, and remain so sweet and good-natured throughout it...Good luck, and regardless of any other medical treatments, make sure this dude gets his cuddles and scritches daily. :)
Try this!

My basset hound had a terrible skin infection like that he would scratch at until he bled. This worked wonders - just use it like a regular shampoo every few days and leave it on the coat to soak in for a few minutes, then wash off. It definitely works. Plus it's pretty cheap.
I’m using this shampoo for my little guy at the moment- https://www.amazon.ca/Veterinary-Formula-Clinical-Care-Antiseborrheic/dp/B0037Z6VK8/ref=pd_aw_fbt_img_2/145-2400310-3972325?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0037Z6VK8&pd_rd_r=74ab5896-db32-4e64-8d1e-56e4d92ab212&pd_rd_w=rBlNn&pd_rd_wg=UqY3Z...
Along with a Highly moisturizing Eucerine lotion (found at drug stores or Walmart) with 5% urea in it.
This regiment has completely cleared up the skin issues that were starting to developed on my little guys skin - I also had it approved by the vet.
I would also caution against coconut oil - it may work for some dogs of course, but in humans it’s highly comedogenic (clogs pore) - I know some humans claim it works for them and I’m not disputing that just giving my two cents/some info. If the issues your pup is having are plugged follicles his skin may be too sensitive for the coconut oil. Good luck!
All my dogs have always had this at some point of their life, we have used this shampoo Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiparasitic & Antiseborrheic Medicated Dog Shampoo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0037Z6VK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_J2X8KH6300AM3W6CRT87?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
And I’m pretty sure the food matters a lot - we use the chicken formula from Costco and their coats are silky smooth.
I remember that they had told me it could be from skin contact or by eating something. And is almost fungal like. One thing I used was this wash on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0037Z6VK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_ZCSPHKCT9AAAZ6MEJ0DX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
hi :) we just went through one treatment and he came back negative and we did the following:
1) my groomer recommended this shampoo (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0037Z6VK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_CHYV1SSJF8AVDJJMHG2M?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) so I bathed him twice a week for the duration of the medication with this
2) I wiped his butt and paws after coming from outside. Only his butt if he poops but his paws always from coming outside
3) I washed his bowls, toys, sheets, etc and every 2-3 days. The stuff that could go in the washer I put on hot water with chlorine and detergent. The stuff that couldn’t be put in washer I soaked with water, soap and a little chlorine
4) I didn’t do this often but my groomer told me to buy witch hazel and clean his ears and face often with a cotton pad since the cysts like to stick to the and ears
good luck!!!
Thanks for the reply!! I have it on order from amazon now! I ended up being able to pick up this as well locally (Amazon shipping is going to take a month 🤦🏻♀️) - https://www.amazon.ca/Veterinary-Formula-Clinical-Care-Antiseborrheic/dp/B0037Z6VK8 , and after only one use I see a visible difference! So if you can’t get your hand on the Douxo brand it might be an option for you in the future too!
My 2.5 year old Dobie gets similar spots. The vet said he would have to do a biopsy to figure out the exact cause, but didn’t seem worried unless it started getting worse. I started using a medicated shampoo I found on Amazon and it does really seem to help. The hair did mostly grow back as well. It also seems to happen worse in the summer for her.

Go to the vet. Our dog was experiencing similar issues and it was allergic dermatitis that was taken care of by an antibiotic and cortisol. Medicated shampoo helps with the itching too. You can get it without a prescription- this is the brand we use and it works well. You will need to treat the underlying cause though or it will be an ongoing issue. The vet can help if it's something less serious but they can also rule out something more serious like an infection.
It's always a good idea to keep the house clean and keep the dog on a flea/tick preventative. My vet has said an oral preventative like nexgard works better than the topical stuff like frontline and in my experience that's true. Vacuum soft surfaces every other day and wash pet/human bedding on hot every week and that should take care of any fleas unless it's a large infestation which you'd definitely notice.
What do you mean by strong stench? Is it coming from their hair, or from their bottom? If you move their hair back, do you see blemishes?

If from their hair, I highly recommend - https://famousskincarefordogs.com/ 's growth shampoo, if you can get your hands on it. My little guy smells amazing to the point where he gets compliments lol (and we only bathe him 3 times a week).
Another one I was using before was - https://www.amazon.ca/Veterinary-Formula-Clinical-Care-Antiseborrheic/dp/B0037Z6VK8 . It also worked wonders and smelled great.

If from their bottom, are they having normal stools? If their anal glands are not emptying then this could be causing a foul smell....

I use an anti-parasitic & anti-seborrheic medicated shampoo. You can buy it on Amazon. It’s a little pricey, but it works and is much better than pills. It completely cleared up after a few uses.
We do the cytopoint injection as well! Also, we wash any open wounds with this:
We washed him in this shampoo and had him stand in the water for like 10 mins it is pretty effective.
We have had good luck with this.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0037Z6VK8/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_Z5K3CZ8SX7N1MFH38JY3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Also, chicken based food has been an issue, so we switched to salmon , and had some luck with this...

When my pit had a awful rash we used this-
Veterinary Formula Clinical Care, 16 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0037Z6VK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_unDaGb5DHW7Q5
Worked great! Still using it today!
Yup this is a very very common problem amongst cresteds - I know everyone calls them blackheads but from my understanding (per my vet) they are actually cystic hair follicles (genetic abnormality). I have been using the famous skincare for dogs products and they work wonders (my little guy is a hairy hairless - I use the growth shampoo and conditioner and the acne spray). Before that, when I couldn't get my hands on it - I was using - https://www.amazon.ca/Veterinary-Formula-Clinical-Care-Antiseborrheic/dp/B0037Z6VK8 , along with a lotion containing 5% urea, and low percentage hyrolocic acid serum (all per my vet). That regiment worked, but not as well as the famous skincare.

Edit: Here is the link to the famous skincare website - https://famousskincarefordogs.com/ . She actually has formulated some products specifically for the breed/shows cresteds. :) .
I found this on reddit, ordered it from Amazon (under $6) and my shih tzt's skin cleared up in a week. https://www.amazon.com/SynergyLabs-Veterinary-Antiparasitic-Antiseborrheic-Medicated/dp/B0037Z6VK8/ref=zg_bs_2975371011_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Z2NHW9JAGP3K6FQWR2TK
I did more research and I think my dog has canine seborrhea. I purchased a shampoo on amazon that targets this skin condition. I'm definitely going to wash my baby more often like you recommended. Thanks a lot! :)

This is my HG product for flaky scalp. It's sulfate free too. The catch? It's a "dog" shampoo - it is brown and ugly and smells like medicine. But so does T-gel and that's for people, and it has similar ingredients too, nothing unsafe.
Tea tree oil honestly makes me flake worse. It can really irritate some people.
