Deer flies rest on leaves on the edges of open spaces. They are attracted to motion and (possibly) the color blue.
These strips are basically duct tape with the back side coated with an ultra-thin vaseline, which is what Tanglefoot is.
You can mount some wire screen (a bit smaller holes than chicken wire, but large enough to offer minimal wind resistance) on a handle (I used an old golf club handle), brush on some Tanglefoot and walk the perimeter of your yard waving it like a flag...do this first thing in the morning and again in the evening. You will be amazed at how many you can catch this way! Then take a torch to it and burn off the carcasses. Very therapeutic.
Deer flies suck. I can't go hiking from now until mid August without a net hat because these bastards LOVE me. And my elbows.
edit to add : you will probably find that local stores do not want you to buy this instead of insecticides so don't stock it. So https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077XLV8T3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_CKR3VZZ82WF247GGBGKK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Nice! I've seen people attach blue solo cups to their hats as well. They cover the cup in Tanglefoot.
I'm not going that far, but I do tie tanglefoot covered blue solo cups to trees in the summer. Within a week they are so covered in flies and mosquitos that I have to change them out. It seems to help around the yard.
I spend lots of time outside and should try your patches next year. :)
What’s the sticky shit?
Edit: oh shit, That’s actually the name
